Facebook Debut May Hurt Future Social-Media IPOs - 0 views

  •
Sorry to keep posting but I thought that this topic was important. Facebook going public as a company could have ramifications for the development of other forms of social media if the shares don't sell well (which they aren't). Is this slow sell a result of general cautiousness over tech stocks or social media specifically? Facebook's disappointing public trading debut could have a ripple effect on everything from IPO valuations to venture-capital funding in the months ahead, especially in anything related to social media.

Facebook: A Profile of its 'Friends' - Pew Research Center - 1 views

  •
Data about Facebook use from Pew's surveys of US users
  •
I like the section titled "characteristics of facebook users" because it surprised me. It was interesting to see how facebook usage correlated to overall social connectivity, assuming that the study is talking about a person's entire social network (including acquaintances, coworkers, etc). I had assumed some people might use facebook exstensively because they didn't have a lot of other strong connection in their social network (offline).

Pakistan Blocks Twitter Over Cartoon Contest - 0 views

  •
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The Pakistani government blocked access to the social networking service Twitter on Sunday, after publicly holding Twitter responsible for promoting a blasphemous cartoon contest taking place on Facebook, officials said. A government spokesman was quoted by local news media as saying that the government had been in talks with Twitter to remove "objectionable" material but that there had been no results.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews Hold Rally on Internet at Citi Field - 0 views

  •
It was an incongruous sight for a baseball stadium: tens of thousands of Orthodox Jewish men, all dressed in black suits and white shirts, streaming through the gates of Citi Field on Sunday, bearing not blue-and-orange Mets caps but tall, big-brimmed black hats. I feel like this event is a few years late. I understand the rising presence of social media in peoples' lives yet I don't know how effective the rally will be in limiting internet usage amongst Orthodox Jews. I wish the article included more information about specific measures. It does talk about filtering technology and apps for locating synagogues and kosher eateries. One guy goes to an internet café where a rabbi can monitor your activity in addition to blocking websites. How does this compare to limits in other orthodox/religious sects in the US? Any info on internet usage amongst American muslim youth?

Lawyer says Zimmerman medical report leaked to boost case - 0 views

  •
A classic example of 'he said, she said" news article about the Trayvon Martin case. Lawyer Benjamin Crump said he has not seen the medical report but questions who leaked the information and why. "It was leaked for a beneficial purpose," he said, "certainly to help George Zimmerman's claim of self-defense." The medical report detailing George Zimmerman's injuries after he shot and killed Trayvon was first reported by ABC News on Tuesday.

PressThink: Objectivity as a Form of Persuasion: A Few Notes for Marcus Brauchli - 0 views

  • “objectivity” as practiced by the American press is a form of persuasion. It tries to persuade all possible users of the account that the account can be trusted because it is unadorned.
  • rehearsing rather than resolving disputes; betraying no position on controversial items, a
  • Shifting about in these language games, journalists have kept objectivity more or less the same over the years: a system of signs meant to persuade us to accept an account of what happened because it appears to contain only what happened and not what the composer of the account feels about it. That’s why you should trust it: because it appears unadorned. The way we capture this in popular culture is by reference to Joe Friday: “Just the facts, Ma’am.” That’s not to say that an account presented this way actually is pure fact. No way. There is no act of journalism that is not saturated with judgment. Even a photograph is framed by the picture taker. When I refer to “Just the facts” I simply mean: that is how the story asks to be understood, not… “that is all there is to it.” There is always more to it. So objectivity is persuasion, the method is “just the facts, lose the adjectives,” and the outcome is supposed to be the user’s trust. Got it?

  • “Of course no one can be totally objective…” and then re-affirm what they have always felt: “but I believe it’s important that we try to keep our opinions out of it.”

  • sows the seeds of mistrust.
  • In the age of mass media, the press was able to define the sphere of legitimate debate with relative ease because the people on the receiving end were atomized— connected “up” to Big Media but not across to each other. And now that authority is eroding.

China: Al Jazeera reporter expelled for 'breaking Chinese laws' - 0 views

  •
Chinese authorities forced Al Jazeera English to close its China news operations, and suggested that its reporter had broken unspecified laws and behaved unethically. The Chinese government refused to explain Tuesday why it had expelled the the English language correspondent of Al Jazeera, but hinted at charges she had broken Chinese laws and behaved unethically. The government rep says they welcome journalists who report "objectively." Calls into question who defines objectivity. Does China only call journalism they like objective? Does objectivity apply to investigative journalism?

This is another example of how media is catering to more specific audiences. This narrowing of news topics for this specific audience could contribute to the idea of a "filter bubble," which could be detrimental to people receiving a great variety of information.

A ruling by a Virginia district court last week decided that "liking" something on Facebook is to simple and is not protected under our First Amendment rights. An example of how the things you do on the internet might hold more power then you think. Interesting to think that you are more protected by saying something then just clicking a button.

Twitter used during an emergency event - 1 views

  •
This is an example of how twitter can be used during mass emergencies or disasters which relates to Starbird and Palen's article on (How) will the revolution be retweeted? This article is about how a body of students tweeted about a shooting at UT austin reaching over 15000 posts after the incident. This shows how twitter can spread important news and will reach a wide range of individual's through common words, such as (in this case) 'gunman' and 'shooter'.
