This is a great site for background information. It's more of a researcher and information site than an educational outreach site (although it has that, too). It's very accessible and a good resource to either review a topic or start learning about something. Targeted to older audiences, or some portions are suitable for upper middle school. NSIDC supports research into our world's frozen realms: the snow, ice, glacier, frozen ground, and climate interactions that make up Earth's cryosphere. Scientific data, whether taken in the field or relayed from satellites orbiting Earth, form the foundation for the scientific research that informs the world about our planet and our climate systems.

Our goal is to become the largest and best source for premium Antarctic related products as well as provide a vast center for news, weather and information from and about the frozen continent." A commercial site with some good info to get students engaged.

Polar Science

Not an obvious resource page for most teachers, but there is a wealth of information here, not just for IPY! Educators should look for the "Classroom Resources" item on the right sidebar and that page will let them refine their search. The news items are also great for informing students on latest and breaking research in many areas.

The Arctic Council Indigenous Peoples' Secretariat is a support Secretariat for the International Indigenous Peoples' Organizations that have Permanent Participant status in the Arctic Council . IPS assists with creating opportunities for the Indigenous Peoples' Organizations to present their causes, and helps provide them with necessary information and materials.

A Nice video from FRAM - High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment, on a project to measure albedo in Greenland., was spotted by my colleagues at IPF. Brings science in a very informative, clear, well shot and edited way, with good presenters:

Wonderful resource for sea ice information. It does not 'rise to the top' in Google! Resources and accessibility for K-12 educators continually improves, so it deserves a revisit if it's been awhile since you looked. This would be a good site to start student research (upper middle & high school).

Here you will find the Antarctic Treaty Papers as well as links to other information of Antarctica's history and the Summit. The summit was in 2009; these provide a good opportunity for an interdisciplinary unit and some great contemporary discussions about the importance of the treaty.

The website blurb does not begin to do justice to the power and wealth of resources in this site. It was unveiled at Copenhage, late 2009. "The Climate 1-Stop provides a single location to share and access climate change tools, resources and information, with a primary focus on adaptation in developing countries.The Climate 1-Stop is a partnership of southern and northern organizations working at all levels, from grass roots to global. "

SnowSTAR 2007 was a Barrenlands Traverse project for IPY that has now ended and the site is no longer actively maintained. The website offers a great deal of good information that will let you incorporate history, math, social studies and more into your classroom, but there are a lot of incomplete pages as well. It seems to be most appropriate for 4 - 6 grades; but since it has some nice representations of things not seen elsewhere, it's worth a look for many levels.
