Last month, Dr. James M. Perrin, a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, became the president-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a professional group of 60,000 doctors. A primary care physician, Perrin is particularly interested in addressing chronic childhood illness during his three years of leadership at the academy, first as president-elect, then president, then president emeritus.

Childhood obesity and other chronic health conditions: the continuing growth in childhood asthma, and the tremendous growth in mental health conditions and developmental conditions like autism. We’ve got three or four major epidemics really growing among children and adolescents in America.

Insurance Commissioner Monica J. Lindeen announced plans for a second public hearing on the proposed acquisition of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana (BCBS) by Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC). A previous hearing on February 12 gave the public an opportunity to weigh in on the proposal, which converts Montana's largest non-profit Health insurer to a for-profit subsidiary of the nation's fourth largest Health insurance company. Former Montana Supreme Court Justice W. William Leaphart will serve as the hearing examiner.
At the March 12 hearing, representatives from BCBS and HCSC will make their case that the proposed acquisition is in the public's interest and in compliance with state law. Both the Commissioner and the Attorney General will have an opportunity to call expert witnesses to evaluate the proposal.

Individuals who have both mental illness (MI) and intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) present clinical challenges to professionals as well as to the systems that attempt to provide care to these individuals. Clinicians frequently have difficulty in appropriately identifying a mental health disorder, even when one exists, in persons who have limited verbal skills. This six-hour workshop is designed to provide the participant with clinical information that will help in the assessment, diagnosis and support strategies necessary to provide appropriate care for this underserved group of people. The participant will learn how mental health signs and symptoms are manifested in persons with a dual diagnosis as compared to those with only mental illness. Upon completion of this training, you will: Articulate the profile and characteristics of people with MI/IDD; Articulate vulnerability factors in people with MI/IDD; Identify best practices in assessment procedures for people with MI/IDD; Identify signs and symptoms of MI in persons with IDD; Describe the major features in the Diagnostic Manual - Intellectual Disabilities (DM-ID); Describe techniques associated with supportive therapy for persons with MI/IDD; Identify the value of the NADD Accreditation and Certification Program. Click here to read the full report (.pdf) As we all know, children/youth with special health care needs eventually become adults, many of whom will continue to have health challenges or disabilities but will want to join the workforce. This week, in anticipation of the July 26 anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Senate Committee on health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) issued a report entitled "Unfinished Business: Making Employment of People with Disabilities a National Priority." The report notes that there has been little to no change in the overall employment rates of people with disabilities since passage of the ADA almost 22 years ago. Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA), announced a goal to increase the number of people with disabilities in the workforce from under five million to six million by 2015. He plans to introduce a series of bipartisan bills aimed at: improving outcomes in transitioning young adults from school to work; increasing opportunities for people with disabilities to own a business; encouraging states to be innovative with programs that provide support to people with disabilities; and providing incentives for people with disabilities to save in order to ensure their economic security.
