MISSOULA - A not so ordinary playground will be ready for students when they return to class at Jefferson School next week.
Members of the Rotary Club of Missoula Sunrise spent Tuesday working on the new playground, which they've funded and built.
Jefferson is the only Missoula school that serves pre-school age students and is a peer model school with both special needs and non-special needs students.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require both students and teachers to demonstrate digital literacy skills by publishing texts online and developing communication skills through the use of different technology tools. The Mapping Media to the Common Core course (part 1) introduces teachers to six different multimedia products which students can create to meet the CCSS requirements; These strategies can also be used to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with disabilities or those with high abilities! Each participant will use an iPad to access the interactive course eBook, as well as, create and share a variety of media products during the course. Children with autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders present numerous challenges for therapists and educators. They have significant processing deficits that impact their functioning across domains, and can stretch the knowledge and resources of even experienced practitioners. Often viewed through the lens of "behavior," the symptoms these children display are more accurately described as manifestations of inefficient and ineffective processing. Understanding how information processing deficits impact these children paves the way for applying a new generation of strategies designed to address core processing problems and promote meaningful skill development. Objectives include: Describe the connection between information processing deficits and symptoms in autism/related disorders. Differentiate between methods that promote rote behavior and those that develop meaningful thinking. Explain how to adjust the pacing of activities to improve processing, communication and behavior. Discuss communication modifications that support processing speed and effectiveness. Describe how processing problems impact behavior and hot to respond in ways that diffuse behavior more quickly. Middle and High schools offer unique challenges for implementing a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). The major key is to build school-wide systems that simultaneously addresses the need for academic and behavioral support and ensures every student has the skills to earn a high school diploma. The answers to behavioral and academic MTSS are right inside every staff development session, but a plan that includes the use of multiple assessment tools to foster data based decision making requires a shift in process for many schools. This session will provide ideas, work time and technology tools that support MTSS implementation and help MS/HS with the shift. Session work will be differentiated to meet the needs of individual schools, with facilitator support provided.

Click here for more information! What:MCT in Missoula is putting on two special performances of Once Upon A Mattress, designed specifically for people with Autism and Aspergers. This means they will be moderating noise levels, using increased visual aids, eliminating any lights shining into the audience and making other adaptations to make the play accessible and enjoyable for people with different sensory processing. Quiet areas will be provided for children who want to withdraw for a break. A company in New York originally did an adaptive play for school children on the autism spectrum to great success and heartfelt appreciation by the children and their families. MCT is adopting some of the lessons learned by the NY company and doing some adapting of their own. MCT plans to put on at least two performances and may extend if that seems desirable. To help apprehensive theatre-goers who might not know what to expect, a website is being created so that families can travel step-by-step through the evening and be fully prepared for the fun to follow.
