First Meeting: Teen Social Group - Missoula - Sept. 13, 2011 - 0 views

  • What: Teenagers with social challenges often lack a safe, accepting context where they can be themselves and develop relationships with their peers, which can place them at risk for a multitude of emotional challenges and can negatively impact their quality of life and self-esteem. MT CAAN is organizing a Teen Social Network to provide a context for any interested local teenagers, both those who are struggling socially (for whatever reason), and for their peers who want to connect with and support them, as healthy communities ideally do. The teen members will determine the direction of the group, meeting times, places, and activities as it evolves. It has been our experience that these diverse social networks benefit those who are doing fine socially as much as those who are struggling at whatever level. It's positive for everybody. All involved learn and grow. The conference organizers, MYTransitions, is a non-profit committee of various agencies and individuals in Montana who are dedicated to working with youth with disabilities to establish meaningful and diverse transitions into adulthood. This year's conference will be focused on the needs and interests of individuals with disabilities and their families, and will include a Real Life Fair and various workshops related to community services and independent living options. National Autism Center - Practitioner Education - 1 views

  • Schools today face the challenge of providing appropriate services to a diverse and increasingly numerous student population diagnosed with ASD. In order to achieve this goal, evidence-based practice is essential in the schools. To assist school professionals as they strive to help these students reach their potential, the National Autism Center has produced a comprehensive 245-page manual, Evidence-Based Practice and Autism in the Schools. The manual outlines relevant topics, including the current state of research findings, professional judgment and data-based clinical decision making, values and preferences of families, and capacity building. Each chapter sets a course for advancing the efforts of school systems to engage in evidence-based practice for their students on the autism spectrum.

IACC Releases Summary of Advances « Autism Speaks Official Blog - 0 views

  • In honor of World Autism Awareness Day, the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) has released its Summary of Advances for 2010. Twenty articles that were published in 2010 were selected across each of the five areas of focus on the IACC strategic plan. Autism Speaks’ Chief Science Officer, Geri Dawson, Ph.D.,  is a member of the committee and was pleased to see advances across the range of autism research and said, “It is encouraging to see the diversity of scientific advances that were made in 2010.“ Dawson noted, “studies that were deemed especially noteworthy included environmental research, genetic discoveries, new early intervention approaches, and assessment of medical conditions such as GI problems and mitochondrial dysfunction.”

  • The proposal would expand on a set of pilot youth crisis diversion programs around the state. In the last year, four programs -- serving Helena, Missoula, Yellowstone County and Eastern Montana, have been having some "good results," said Jani McCall of the Yellowstone Youth Crisis Network, who works with the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch.
