Call for Applicants, Youth in Development (YiD) internship program - 0 views

  •
    Visit usidc.org for more information

The summer 2014 Youth in Development (YiD) internship program is now open for applications from November 11, 2013, through January 29, 2014.

The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) launched the YiD internship program in 2013 with funding support from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF).  The YiD program focuses on youth with disabilities  from across the U.S. who are interested in international development and foreign affairs careers.  The project follows from a vision, core to USICD's mission, to increase disability inclusion in U.S. foreign affairs by supporting future generations of Americans with disabilities to invest their skills and talents in this field.

The summer 2014 YiD internship program will bring a group of talented graduate students, recent graduates, and rising college juniors and seniors with disabilities to Washington, DC, for nine weeks. This will include a one-week training and orientation program followed by an eight-week internship at an international organization in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.  USICD will cover the cost of fully-accessible housing during the YiD progam, reimburse travel expenses to and from DC, and provide a limited stipend. It is anticipated that the program will run from May 25 to July 25, 2014. These dates may be subject to change.

Children & Youth with Special Healthcare Needs in Healthy People 2020: A Consumer Persp... - 0 views

    Register for this webinar

    What:
Healthy People 2020 contains almost 600 objectives for improving the health of all Americans, and 100 of those objectives relate to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN). To highlight some of these objectives and envision how the objectives might influence CYSHCN as they mature into adults, Genetic Alliance and Family Voices collaborated with the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Needs in the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) - which last year released Envision 2020, its strategic plan - to develop a family and consumer perspective on the national health promotion agenda and how it relates to CYSHCN and their families. By focusing on a small portion of the many community and organizational accomplishments related to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN) and systems of care, we hope to generate discussions of the gaps that remain, as well as equip families and providers to better advocate and care for CYSHCN and their families. This webinar will present Envision 2020 as well as the Consumer Perspective document and demonstrate how Healthy People 2020 objectives can influence and provide direction for improving systems and services for individuals with special healthcare needs.

    When:
    Thursday, May 16, 2013
    1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Mountain

    Cost:

Making the Move to Managing Your Own Personal Assistance Services (PAS): A Toolkit for ... - 0 views

  • Transitioning into adulthood can be awkward for nearly every young person. For transition-age youth with disabilities, issues surrounding managing Personal Assistance Services (PAS) can be intensified by normal developmental concerns such as striking out on your own and navigating the road into adulthood.  Accessing and maintaining long-term supports, such as PAS, has often been a significant barrier to employment youth and adults with disabilities. This new guide assists youth in strengthening some of the most fundamental skills essential for successfully managing their own PAS: effective communication, time-management, working with others, and establishing professional relationships.  Such skills are key to not only enhancing independence, but also thriving in the workplace and growing professionally.

CDC - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health - Youth - 0 views

  • Schools that have clear policies, procedures and activities designed to prevent bullying and have supportive staff and student organizations can be effective in reducing verbal and physical harassment. These kinds of positive school climates are associated with reduced suicide risk and better mental health among LGBT students [5,6].  For youth to thrive in their schools and communities, they need to feel socially, emotionally, and physically safe. Schools, communities, parents, and youth have a role to play in building positive, supportive, and healthy environments for youth. Such environments promote acceptance and respect and help youth feel valued [7].

  • As many as 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBT, and a new Williams Institute study of youth shelters confirms this estimate. Between October 2011 and March 2012, 354 agencies completed surveys about their clients and found that about 40 percent of their homeless and non-homeless clients were LGBT (9 percent of whom identified as bisexual). About 30 percent of clients using housing-related services (like emergency shelter and transitional living programs) were LGBT.
