Since I posted my review of Livescribe’s echo smartpen on Wednesday, I’ve received several emails, talkbacks, Facebook postings, and tweets about possible use cases of the device for students with special needs. I was so excited about the device itself that I overlooked one of the most important markets for the pen.

Facebook and Twitter will be awfully quiet come Nov. 1 if a slew of autism advocacy groups have their way. Advocates around the globe are pushing for a one day “communication shutdown” in an effort to create awareness and raise funds for autism organizations in more than 40 countries.

What: Our monthly Autism Support Group Meetings have been a success with parents coming out to share stories and ideas. Please join us at the next meeting and help us grow our network of parents and caregivers. Mike Uhrich, owner of Carter’s Brewery in Billings, Montana, created a new beer named after his 3 1/2 year old son, Mason, who was recently diagnosed with autism. Called “Mason’s Awareness Ale,” Uhrich will sell 326 gallons of the ale and donate the proceeds to an autism charity.
