OK2TALK - Teens and young adults who suffer from mental illness - 0 views

shared by Roger Holt on 01 Aug 13 - No Cached

Teens and young adults who suffer from mental illness can feel hopeless and alone. Many don't know what's wrong with them but feel like it's their fault. Those who understand what is happening fear they can't be helped. Because of the stigma attached to mental illness, it's often hard for those suffering and their families and friends to talk about what they're going through. But help is available, and it works. The goal of OK2TALK is to create a community for teens and young adults struggling with mental health problems and encourage them to talk about what they're experiencing by sharing their personal stories of recovery, tragedy, struggle or hope. Anyone can add their voice by sharing creative content such as poetry, inspirational quotes, photos, videos, song lyrics and messages of support in a safe, moderated space. We hope this is the first step towards getting help and feeling better.

Gazette opinion: Writing prescriptions for better mental health - 0 views

  • Montana’s mental health safety net is full of holes.Stigma, lack of insurance, Medicaid restrictions and a shortage of mental health professionals all contribute to the “state of despair” that reporter Cindy Uken has been detailing in a Billings Gazette series on suicide. The state’s suicide rate — the highest among the 50 states and double the national average — is cause for alarm. Yet it isn’t the only terrible symptom of Montanan’s mental health care gap.

Pediatrician Group Calls For Increased Mental Health, Autism Screening - Disability Scoop - 0 views

  • Pediatricians should take a lead role in identifying and helping children experiencing mental health disorders, a national pediatricians group said Tuesday. Roughly 1 in 5 children experience a mental health disorder, but just 20 percent of those children receive treatment for such conditions. And pediatricians must fill this gap, according to a mental health task force from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Mental Health Parity Rule Clarifies Standards For Treatment Limits, Coverage Of Interme... - 0 views

  • The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 required health plans that offer mental health and substance use disorder benefits to cover them to the same extent that they cover medical/surgical benefits. Among other things, it prohibits having treatment limits or financial coverage requirements such as copayments or deductibles that are more restrictive than a plan’s medical coverage. Interim regulations issued in 2010 clarified some issues about implementing the law.

Law brings addiction, mental care into parity - 0 views

  • Mental-health care for thousands of Montanans covered by group health insurance plans will be more affordable in 2010 thanks to a new federal law. Congress passed the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act in October 2008 as part of the multibillion-dollar federal bailout package. The law, which took effect Jan. 1, prevents insurance plans that cover treatment for mental illnesses and addictions from placing stricter limits on those services than on other covered services. It does not require plans to cover treatment for mental health and substance abuse.

Feds To Move Away From DSM - Disability Scoop - 0 views

  • Just weeks before a new version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is scheduled for release, the head of the National Institute of Mental Health says it’s time to change how mental conditions are categorized. The agency will be redirecting its research focus away from the symptom-based diagnostic criteria of the DSM toward more scientifically verifiable standards, the mental health agency’s director, Thomas Insel, wrote in a recent blog post. By shifting away from thinking about mental disorders as they are currently classified in the DSM, Insel says researchers will be able to establish a new diagnostic system based on emerging science. “Unlike our definitions of ischemic heart disease, lymphoma or AIDS, the DSM diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure,” Insel wrote. “Patients with mental disorders deserve better.”

A thoughtful and sensitive review of the Adam Lanza Case - 0 views

  •
From the office of the child advocate from the state of Connecticut, a very thoughtful, thorough review of this young man's life and death. http://www.ct.gov/oca/lib/oca/sandyhook11212014.pdf The group points out many of the failures along the way, including reluctance of the school system to accurately classify him in the autism spectrum when he was very young, and later not identifying and addressing his social and emotional deficits. They also highlight the lack of coordination between school, health and mental health providers, which allowed him to fall through the cracks in the system. Also it clearly shows the inappropriate use of homebound school as a means to avoid addressing problems, and the lack of transition from child to adult services and the problems caused when the school system graduated him early from high school, and no longer offered services. By his final year he was clearly isolated in his room, anorectic (6 feet tall and 112 lbs.), and his only forays outside of home were to spend hours dancing on the Dance Dance Revolution game at a local theatre, so he was not hidden away, many people saw his physical and behavioral deterioration on display in a public place. This may be a helpful teaching tool, not only as a case study that documents how untreated developmental disorder can evolve into severe psychopathology, but also as a lesson in the need to coordinate school, health and mental health services, and the potential risks when it is not done.

Systemic Overhaul of Medicaid For Youth With Mental Illness: Settlement For Statewide C... - 0 views

  • “Treating children at home whenever possible,” said Patrick Gardner, an attorney with Young Minds Advocacy Project, “is more humane, less costly, and more effective than institutionalization.” Under the agreement the state will establish a new program and approach for delivering mental health services called Wraparound with Intensive Services or “WISe.” The program will help prevent adverse outcomes for youth with serious mental illness such as hospitalization, long-term institutionalization in psychiatric facilities, and placements in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. These are all experiences Smith has known personally and doesn’t want repeated for other kids. “This case,” says Smith, “was about doing something to make a difference so kids with illnesses like mine won’t have to go through the things I did.” Leecia Welch, Senior Attorney at the National Center for Youth Law, agrees. “Approval of this settlement has set the stage for increasing access to appropriate mental health services for Washington’s most vulnerable youth. Better access to care means better outcomes for kids like Phillip.”
