Causes and Effects of Poverty - 3 views

  •
The world spends money trying to build armies, fight wars and and build econimies which helps the rich but does nothing for the people in poverty. I think this is surprising that the world focuses on helping themselves and not the people that need it but I can beleive that the countries are trying to make themselves more powerful and poverty is a result.
  •
A lot of information about poverty. why is everything so freaking sad
  •
This article gives cause and effect, which makes it a little easier to userstand poverty

Causes of Poverty - 0 views

  •
This is a short, simplen paragraph, that does exactly what the title says. It really made me upset reading it, because poverty happens everywhere, and can happen to anyone. Sometimes, it isn't anyone's fault. Some people are born into it. and poverty can be a result of no enough education. I feel very fortunate that both my parents have good jobs, and are educated. I know that some people aren't that lucky.

poverty - 4 views

this shows the results of poverty and how it affects world hunger. I was very surprised after i read about how much things most people that are being affected by poverty can't get. I was also very surprised on how many children die of poverty in under 5 years.

  •
This site gave me a lot of useful new facts without adding a lot of fluff. I found it interesting and an easy to read if you dislike your topic and would otherwise give up.
  •
i agree this article is a very good article with problems and solutions about poverty
  •
D: That's so sad.I know there are a lot of people out there who can't get the kind of healthcare they need, and I know a ton of people who go to the hospital often. If there are that many in my neighborhood, I wonder how many can't afford to go to the hospital.
  •
This article was really sad, I couldn't believe that over 250,000 children die from hunger each week. I think it gave lots of good information without too much to read.
  •
Great article. It was sad but atleast it wasn't trying to hide the truth or make it sound not as bad as it is. The fact that so many children die cannot be ignored...
  •
With so many children dieing I almost wish people wouldn't have babies if they can't feed them because in the end the child will die.
  •
Its disappointing because at the end of world war 2 scientist that with the advancement of technology, poverty would disappear but it didn't ;(

Federal Poverty Guidelines - 0 views

  •
Poverty Threshold is different that poverty guidelines. Threshold is normaly used for statistics, such as estimating the number of Americans in poverty. Poverty guidelines are used for administrative purposes, such as seeing if someone meets the requirments of certain programs. The poverty guildelines may also be known as 'federal poverty level.' (There are charts showing the poverty guidelines for different family sizes that live in the 48 connected staes, Alaska, and Hawii) The poverty guideline changes depending on where you live. \nI was surprized to see that in 2009 Alaska had the highest poverty guideline at $13,530 and the 48 connected states had the lowest with $10,830. I also cant imagine my family of six living off $29,530. It also makes me think about all the other nessesities that we take for granted and how people living in poverty would be really greatful for them.

Gender and Poverty - 4 views

  •
Forgot the tags and comment oops O.o i will post the comment. I find it amazing that 6 out of 10 of the poorest people in the world are women. This will tell you about the difference in gender and poverty!

  •
I dont think its surprising that more women are in poverty than men.I think there is that certain amount of feminism involved in payment. Sadly this proves it
  •
I find the article very sad. I had no clue that poverty could be effected by gender. I was also shocked to see that 75% of women cant get bank loans because they have unpaid or insecure jobs.
  •
Knowing that women are the poorest gender is both outragoious and agreeable. Since women are the care takers in the family. But losing 85% of calories getting water, is unhealthy and sad.
  •
i think that if women got the same oppritunties as men like in jobs and education, there would be less problem with poverty in women.

What are the Long Term Effects of Poverty? - 4 views

  •
This talks about the long term effects of poverty and has a few paragraphs about understanding generational poverty. Reading the effects, I wasn't to surprised because I can see all of that happening to children and families in poverty.

This article tells the long-term effects of poverty, the different kinds of poverty, and how we can help stop it. I thought that this article was really helpful if you don't know much about poverty, or if you want to know how to help it. I think it's pretty sad that some people are born into poverty and they can't get the right education because of it.
  •
The article seems to really talk a lot about how poverty affects the life of a person. It's terrible how those with less money have so many more difficulties than those who have money. Basic needs should have no price.
  •
THis article made me so sad! I never knew all of the problems that can be caused by poverty! I agree with Pen Basic needs should have no price. I really want to reach out and help those familes in need. I also think I will understand people who are depressed or who are in poverty. I think I will become a better person because of this article.

I felt really bad when I saw that 20 percent of children live in poverty :(
  •
I never really knew how people were considered "poor". This artilcle really explains how people are considered poor. This article really shows dfferent views on how people view poverty.
  •
This site will give you facts of Poverty.
  •
I was amazed that two adults with three children would make 25,603 dollars. I can't even imagine how they would survive this. Looking at the graph is really an eye opener to how little people really make.
  •
This article has many frequently asked questions about poverty. It contains many facts about poverty and how it has changed over time, how it differs between different races, and how it is measures depending on how many people live in a household. I was surprised when i saw the graph of the poverty in different races. The poverty in thousands was pretty much the same until you got down to the asian percent. It was considerably lower then any other race which surprised me.
  •
I really like this website because it gives you all you should know if you want to learn all about poverty. Along with descriptions of everything, it provides very helpful charts and graphs.
  •
its amazing to me how africa has changed
  •
I didn't know that In 2009, 14.3 percent of all persons lived in poverty. I also agree with luke.
  •
It talks about the university of Michigan finding out about how many people in the U.S. are in poverty and won't tell anyone. It goes from a single individual to single parent to two adults.

I really liked this because it gives you a chance to sponser a child, and it also tells you about what you have to do and what will happen when you sponser a child. This is a great site to look at after you look at poverty articles because it will really make you want to do something to help out. Thanks for sharing!
  •
I cannot believe that 24,000 kids die each DAY just from poverty. I also like the way you can sponser a child, and they made it look so easy, it makes it so easy to want to do something to help.
  •
i agree with kayla. im glad that so many people are trying to help children in poverty so that they can get the potential and education they need! when i get home i'm going to sign up for this website so that i can help them aswell as other people. :D

  •
This is Times magazine article about the number of kids who are homless in the U,S. A few statistics: Texas (337,105), California (292,624), Louisiana (204,053), Georgia (58,397) and Florida (49,886).

I wonder how accrate that survey was because I don't think people would tell the truth about how they are living. Some people are too proud. I didn't know that the level of kids living in poverty was so high before the economy got this bad!
  •
I think it's really sad that so many children are homeless. When you think of homelessness, adults usally come to mind. It is scary and alarming how many children and teens are homeless, especially if you put yourself in their shoes. I doubt I would survive.
  •
If i was one of those kids i would go mad out of my mind. Think of the kids who are 9 and younger live out side don't have food every day. How would you fill?
  •
That just feels so unfair that kids are just born into this kinda thing. It's pretty sad that they can't get the right education to be successful in their lives because they were born poor :(((((

I really liked this site! INstead of just talking about poverty, it also was talking about nutrition. I found it very interesting, and i really liked reading it. Thank you for sharing this!
  •
This site talked about ways to help with poverty. I liked how it listed different sites you could go to for more information and besides that really just educated the reader. I feel that it's format could have been different though so as not to bore the reader.
  •
That is rediculous how many people die every year from poverty! I cant even begin to imagine what it would be like to live in a situation like those people were in. Not having enough food, or a warm place to sleep at night

Why can't people escape poverty? - 3 views

  •
This is an article that came out March 30, 2010. A personal story about a girl coming out from college trying to find a way in this world. It also talks about the live's of black families and white families and comparing their wealth.

that was a really inspirational article...i hope more people realize that often it isn't the people's fault-they just weren't given a chance to start a new life without all that baggage.
  •
Peterson's story was very sad but it was interesting too see that she used education as her solution. I hope that people who are like her read her story and use education as their solutions. If she can inspire me im sure she can inspire alot of people just like her.
  •
Its so hard to escape poverty because they have to get a job. In this bad economy it so hard.
  •
People ask why people stay in poverty for so long, and this article answers that question
  •
I liked the last part that said with personal education comes, the need for others to be educated. I thought this was really good because it was saying that the first and most important step to helping others in poverty is to be educated well.
  •
I think that it's really interesting that education is one of the big reasons people are in poverty. If we could give everyone a proper education, we could probably take a lot of people out of poverty.

Bread for the World - 7 views

It really scares me to know that one child dies every five seconds from hunger. Also, it was eye-opening to see that 9 million kids die of hunger before their fifth birthday. I think it's really unfair that someone that young has to go through such living.

It's really really sad how a child dies every five seconds!! It's also amazing how many people have dropped into poverty over just the last 2 years.
  •
every five seconds...? Wow, I counted to 10 in my head and two kids just died 0_o
  •
These facts are really depressing its so upsetting to hear that a child dies every fives seconds and how the recession has pushed 100-150 million people into poverty
  •
I can't believe that just last year the entire total of people in poverty reached all the way up to 100-150 million people. It's really shocking that while this was happening, I was sitting here without a clue. It's truly amazing what goes on when you turn away for but a moment.
  •
Like Julia. That's actually pretty scary and deppressing. 925 million people in poverty is pretty insane. It's hard to see people in poverty who lives their life stuggling for food and/or $$... :(
  •
It's sad that a kid dies every five seconds. But whats even worse is that 9 million kids die before their fifth birthday.
  •
omg thats so sad and scary makes me count my blessings
  •
925 million people are hungry. They cant put food on their tables. I think we take it for granted. We always have food in our fridges, we always have food on our tables. We need to appreciate more for what we get. Next time our moms put something on the table we don't like, you should still appreciate that you get food in your bodies. There are millions people out there that would do anything for just a thing of spinach.

This article was really a wake up call. I never realized that that many people were in poverty, and i never really thought about how many children were in poverty. This is a really good article if you are interested in the statistics of poverty
  •
I cant believe how many people are in poverty in our country
  •
I was so surprised when i read this. I had absolutley no idea how many people were affected by poverty, especially children.
  •
This is very interesting and its good to know the percentages for poverty rates and stuff. it is kind of sad, though, how extremly high all these percentages are.
  •
I am amazed that the official rate of poverty was 14.3 in 2009. from the 13.2 from 2008
  •
    The statistics were crazy shocking!!!
  •
It's sad how much the people in poverty goes up in only 1 year.
  •
ahhhh! everyone's just like, "Oh how eye opening!" -_-
  •
I think the saddest thing about this is that there is so much good info and statistics out there, like this website, but so many people don't know how bad poverty really is. I had no idea that poverty was this bad, or that it was increasing this fast.

Article on Ohio have one of the highest "rates of poverty and some of the lowest household income. This came as an eye opener that poverty is closer to us than we sometimes think. In our perspective Ohio would never look like the place with one of the highest rates of poverty and lowest household income but this article really opened my eyes.

I didn't know that OHIO had one of the most highest poverty rates.

Poverty Rates in Ohio - 1 views

This site lists the percentage of Ohio's Poverty. It mentions that poverty in Ohio is located in major cities which means that poverty in Ohio is linked to the market. I was pretty shocked when i found out that Ohio has the 24th highest poverty rate in the United States.
  •
This article gives information about why the worst poverty in Ohio exists and what is being done about poverty in Ohio. It gives poverty rates of counties and it saddens me when I saw that east Cleveland has 32% rate of poverty. It makes me think that maybe as Phoenix we could help reach out to people and give them something that could change their life.
  •
It has facts on stats in America and ohio is the 24th highest poverty rate. I think that is not good because 23 other states have lower poverty percentage then us.

This website gives a nice summary about poverty and some stats. It also gives some other info about poverty. I like this because the paragraphs are short and they give good info on poverty.
  •
I thought that it was really sad when they said that one of the reasons people are in poverty is because they are disabled mentally or physically. Another reason that people are in poverty is because they have little to no education which is one reason they can't get a job. I thought that these were reasons that we take for granite everyday. We complain about going to school, but i bet most people in poverty wish they were where we are now.
