It really amazed me how little they live on a day. They live on a dollar a day and I go the mall and buy $100 worth of clothes.

It Disturbied me to learn that about every min some where in the wolrd a women dies giving birth. It also shocked me that about 40% of the worlds population doesnt have bacis sanitary water.

A lot of the facts in this are pretty suprising, like that every 3.6 some one dies of starvation.

It was really disheartening to hear that over half the people in the world live on less then 2 dollars a day

It made me feel really bad when it said that six million kids die every year from malnutrition before their 5th birthday.

I could not believe that 800 million people every day go to bed hungry, and that 300 million of them are kids.

800 million people go to bed hungry every night! I don't even know what it feels like to be starved or to go to bed without food. I can't even begin to imagine what these people are going through.

Tara's right...it's hard to put yourself in somebody else's shoes when you are so used to having basic things, like food. But it's important to try.

The Paragrapsh that really caught my attention was the phone tittled "Big corperations make poor pay higher taxes" becuase it just seems crazy to me that you would tax the people who are the most likely not to be able to pay? not to mention the majority who would be buying the corperations product?

If i was hungry before i went to bed, i would just walk downstairs and get a snack. It's hard to imagine that these people do not have that, and that they are almost always hungry. I just can't even imagine that.

mr reed the world sucks te rich are paying incentives to government so they wont raise taxes on the rich. so where are they gonna get the money? middle and lower class people!

This article is very depressing, the way it's written. But, it does have very interesting facts. It's hard to believe that basically 1 in 6 people are living on less than a dollar a day. In our country, a dollar can barely buy you a burrito or a burger. Although some people may use the excuse that stuff costs less in other places, so what? In our country, the minimum wage is about $56 dollars a day, and a lot of people have other money saved up. It seems like so much, compared to the less than one dollar, but people are barely getting by on that. It's just not fair that a lot of people have a ton of money, but there are more people living on pratically no money.

It really made me sad that over two and a half times as many families fall below EPI's family budget levels than below federal poverty lines. I can't imangine how it's like to live that way.

Its shocking how so many people in ohio are in poverty, when i don't SEE many.

About poverty in Africa and it has stories, and pictures, and facts . i was really sad how the artical said "it is estimated that more than 18 million people have died to date, of which over 3 million were children. Additionally, more than 25 million adults " i was shocked

I wonder how accrate that survey was because I don't think people would tell the truth about how they are living. Some people are too proud. I didn't know that the level of kids living in poverty was so high before the economy got this bad!

I think it's really sad that so many children are homeless. When you think of homelessness, adults usally come to mind. It is scary and alarming how many children and teens are homeless, especially if you put yourself in their shoes. I doubt I would survive.

That is really shocking! I've never thought that poverty would be related to teen pregancy, but now that I read this it makes so much sense. It's so sad, but it's also promising, because if we can beat poverty, then that can significantly help teen pregnancy.

i don't think that we could beat teen pregnancy. you really can't tell someone to stop you know. but poverty could be beaten easily then again there both decisions. or well teen pregnancy is.

ya, you can't really control how many teens get pregnant, but poverty can lead to teen pregnancy (and vice versa).

its really sadening that if the mother has not earned a high school diploma or equivalency degree, the child will grow up in poverty 64 percent of the time. i think that this problem needs to be adressed so that we can stop this vicious cycle.

I never linked poverty and teen pregnancy to poverty, but after reading thing article, it all makes sence. I also think that it would be really tough to be a teen mom in general, but then on top of that living in poverty. I cant image how hard and stressful that would be on a family.

i think its sad that a child born to an unmarried teen mother has a 27 percent chance of growing up in poverty. i mean, how would you feel if that was your mom who made that decision. ?

Its sad that just some dumb mistakes made by teenagers can change there lives forever. and part of beeing a teenager is makeing duimb mistakes, so you can learn and become expirenced adult. But all you can say is "abstinance" I beliveve that the gov't needs to work even harder to prevent it, and really spend some time and money to fight this growing problem.

I never thought teenage pregnancy would ever be related to poverty. I was amazed at how the numbers of poverty in a state was closely followed by the numbers of teen pregnancy in that area. I would never what to have a kid when I am like 16. But living poverty at the same time must be so hard. It was so shocking how the teen's kid would must likely grow up to be like their parents were. Which is so sad.

I thought that this article was interesting because i never would have thought that that getting pregnant would be a cause of poverty.

It doesn't really suprise me that teen pregnancy is linked to poverty. Most teenage mothers can't pay for all the costs of a baby.

It sad but clearly obvious that teen pregnacy is a vicious cycle. Born to a teen mother, children are likely to grow up in poverty, making it likely that they will get pregnant in their teenage years.

This article was very shocking for me. "The report's rankings of states by teen pregnancy rates looks eerily similar to the U.S. Census rankings of states by poverty rates." That line really just took my breath away, because I seriously had no idea that teen pregnancy could be linked to poverty in any way. It just hurt my heart seeing the way that poverty can really have that much of an effect on people.

I agree with Kelsey, its not surprsing at all. Yestarday i went to the food pantry and Mr.Maddox noticed a can of maybe formula and said that pint of baby formula lasts two days and costs $15. its crazy how much a child costs and especially for a teen whose not prepared finacually and mentally

I liked how this article gave another example of what can cause many people to be in poverty because of. I think its really sad how many young girls throw their life away and have to end up being homeless or in poverty.

It's so sad to see all those kids but it's good to see that they're coming together and they have hope. I like the picture with the road through it.

I like the photoset called listening. I think that to truly understand and educate ourselves about poverty, we have to first listen to the needs of those who are living with it. Very interesting picture.

That is really sad. It upsets me that so many people have to live like that. Its really upsetting. It makes me wanna help them but i feel like i can't, which also makes me sad.

I liked this article because although it talked about the sad poverty statistics it did talk about how the government is trying to help compared to other articles which blame the government.

This article was not only informational, but it made me hopeful. Full of statistics, this article gives you information on the effects of poverty AND tells you what is currently being done to help this growing problem in America. "Everyday 2,660 children are born into poverty; 27 die because of it." Although this fact is saddening, I was inspired by this fact: "In 1995, 49% of American adults regularly did some form of volunteer work -- a total of 20.3 billion hours." It's good to see that children in poverty are being helped by those more fortunate than themselves. (:

I was surprized to see that poverty in the Columbus district is the highest percent, at 82%. I thought that Columbus would be one of the disticts that had a lower rate of poverty.

This article was really a wake up call. I never realized that that many people were in poverty, and i never really thought about how many children were in poverty. This is a really good article if you are interested in the statistics of poverty

I was so surprised when i read this. I had absolutley no idea how many people were affected by poverty, especially children.

This is very interesting and its good to know the percentages for poverty rates and stuff. it is kind of sad, though, how extremly high all these percentages are.

I am amazed that the official rate of poverty was 14.3 in 2009. from the 13.2 from 2008

i think its really cool how people come up with ideas like quizes because it allows people to have fun and still give back. you might think that a couple grains of rice is nothing but to some people, that could be a lot of food.

just think of all the people we can help if everyone donates and takes the quiz. We can help make an effort to make a difference to people in poverty. They should have more websites like this. Something for like homeless people. Everytime you answer something, something can be donated to a homelss shelter or something. I dont know, sounds good to me.

I really like this website, how you can donate grains of rice for answering questions. It's like a two way street. People in poverty get rice while we get to learn. I just wish they had some harder questions. These are too easy for me. but i did donate 530 grains of rice!

That's a good way to help. It's entertaining for the viewer/player as well as helpful. Navigating the site you're bound to learn more about the hungry and poor.

i like the quiz, but i don't know if they actually donating rice. if they do donate rice i think it is a smart idea, but if they don't donate rice, then what is the point?

This website is sweet! I think this was a really cool way to start fighting poverty while learning new things. It does go slowly but i will definatly do this again sometime.

I took the quiz and donated 1000 grains of rice LITERALLY. That is also a great way to fight poverty and it is a awesome idea. But they should have more publicity to get to millions more people.

I donated 500 grains of rice by answer 50 questions in a row. This is a great idea, because it gives people a game that teaches them, and they're also helping to feed the less fourtunate! I wonder what other ideas we could spin off of this?
