Strained Suburbs: The Social Service Challenges of Rising Suburban Poverty - 1 views

  •
It talks about how poverty is more focused on central cities, but poverty rates are increasing at a quicker pace in suburban areas.
  •
I didn't know there was suburban poverty. I only thought poverty was in downtown cities

Stop poverty from stealing a child's potential - 5 views

poverty is really hurting kids and thier future. Watching the video made me sad seeing all the faces of the little kids that are in poverty.

I really liked this because it gives you a chance to sponser a child, and it also tells you about what you have to do and what will happen when you sponser a child. This is a great site to look at after you look at poverty articles because it will really make you want to do something to help out. Thanks for sharing!
  •
I cannot believe that 24,000 kids die each DAY just from poverty. I also like the way you can sponser a child, and they made it look so easy, it makes it so easy to want to do something to help.
  •
i agree with kayla. im glad that so many people are trying to help children in poverty so that they can get the potential and education they need! when i get home i'm going to sign up for this website so that i can help them aswell as other people. :D

Empowering Women in Poverty - 7 views

This article talks about women in Africa that are in poverty and how the Hunger Project is helping.

The fact that more than three quarters of women have HIV is scary I felt. When I saw that women in are giving up their food their food so that their children can eat is really sad. This article and all the other articles that I've been reading makes me want to do something.
  •
this is a really great article. i new that poverty affected everyone that has to go through it, but i never realised how much more it affects woman. I wonder why AIDS is now more of a womans disease?
  •
I couldn't believe that 3/4 of young people with HIV and AIDS were women! That really scares me. I agree with Mariah that women giving up food for their children is really sad. This article really makes me want to find "solutions" to poverty.
  •
I couldn't belive that women are usually in poverty! Young girls don't go to school, and 3/4 of young people with HIV and AIDS are young girls! To hear women giving up their meals so their children can have food is so sad. THis really wants me to take action and try to help those in need.
  •
2/3 of women!! I agree with Molly. That scares me as well. The one thing I'm wondering is why women? Why are women getting the disease? Women are making a sacrifice so their children can eat is very brave. Especially in poverty. I can see they are making a big scarafice.
  •
I thought is was really sad when they said that women are trying to help meet their families needs but are restricted because of the lack of resources. I would hate to be in poverty, but it would be even worse if you had to watch your children suffer and there is no way that you can help them.

Effects of Poverty, Hunger, and Homelessness on Children and Youth - 0 views

  •
This website has a bunch of statistics about different areas of poverty. For example, they have a section of statistics about where child poverty is concentrated. This website has both causes and effects of poverty. But what I also like about this website, is it has not only things about poverty, but also things about hunger, and homelessness. This website really expresses how poverty has grown, and how it effects everyone, especially children. It make me feel very fortunate that I am healthy, go to a great school, and have loving and educated parents.

Causes and Effects of Poverty - 3 views

The world spends money trying to build armies, fight wars and and build econimies which helps the rich but does nothing for the people in poverty. I think this is surprising that the world focuses on helping themselves and not the people that need it but I can beleive that the countries are trying to make themselves more powerful and poverty is a result.
  •
A lot of information about poverty. why is everything so freaking sad
  •
This article gives cause and effect, which makes it a little easier to userstand poverty

Why can't people escape poverty? - 3 views

  •
This is an article that came out March 30, 2010. A personal story about a girl coming out from college trying to find a way in this world. It also talks about the live's of black families and white families and comparing their wealth.

  •
that was a really inspirational article...i hope more people realize that often it isn't the people's fault-they just weren't given a chance to start a new life without all that baggage.
  •
Peterson's story was very sad but it was interesting too see that she used education as her solution. I hope that people who are like her read her story and use education as their solutions. If she can inspire me im sure she can inspire alot of people just like her.
  •
Its so hard to escape poverty because they have to get a job. In this bad economy it so hard.
  •
People ask why people stay in poverty for so long, and this article answers that question
  •
I liked the last part that said with personal education comes, the need for others to be educated. I thought this was really good because it was saying that the first and most important step to helping others in poverty is to be educated well.
  •
I think that it's really interesting that education is one of the big reasons people are in poverty. If we could give everyone a proper education, we could probably take a lot of people out of poverty.

Poverty Rising in Suburban School - 3 views

  •
The poverty rate in columbus is starting to show in the schools. As other articles have said, poverty influences not only physical, but mental health. I think the capacity at which poverty is rising is dramatic, and the fact that it has seeped into schools in astounding,

I was surprized to see that poverty in the Columbus district is the highest percent, at 82%. I thought that Columbus would be one of the disticts that had a lower rate of poverty.
  •
i think caroline is right. its sad that the government has tostep in and lower the cost of luinches for some people because america is so poor

i hadn't ever realized how many people in the columbus area were in poverty like the columbus school district all the way up at 82%

what is extreme poverty? - 6 views

  •
This article is about extreme poverty and many facts about it. This article made me really sad because there are a lot of sad facts about poverty.
  • ...3 more comments...
  •
Poverty is sad, 600 million children are living in extreme poverty. 75 million children are out of school. It's horrible because they don't even get a chance for a good life without school.
  •
i think one of the saddest thing is that kidsw are dying from curable diseases. that means that we arent doing enough to make sure that everyone gets the treatment they deserve.
  •
That's sad to see that approx. 25,000 children die each day to something that can be prevented. I wonder what the U.N. is doing to prevent that
  •
I didn't know that, approximately 9.2 million children under the age of 5 die each year, mostly from preventable diseases.
  •
It's so sad to see that so every day and every minute a kid dies because of poverty i wonder if anyone is trying to do anything to help if not why don't they start

This article talks about people in poverty and why they struggle to survive. Iwas really sad when I saw the statistics about how 26,000 to 30,000 children in poverty die everyday.
  •
I didn't know that Statistics show that 14 to 20 percent of the U.S. population lives in poverty.

This chart shows that there is a alot of poverty even here in the US. This lists them by states by the highest poverty rate. Its not surprising but its still sad.
  •
Ohio is #24. That's like, in the middle from everyone else. That's really sad to know, I feel bad for being so selfish and buying things for myself when there are people out there who don't own alot...

Im surprised we are at #24 i thought we would be higher because i have seen a lot of poverty in ohio

Take a quiz, donate rice. - 29 views

  •
Basicly if you get questions right it donates 10 grains of rice to needy countries for every question you answer right. I thought it was a really good idea. I wonder who came up with it.

  •
Wow. This is awesome! Just by taking a quiz I am helping the world. I think this is a great idea.
  •
i think its really cool how people come up with ideas like quizes because it allows people to have fun and still give back. you might think that a couple grains of rice is nothing but to some people, that could be a lot of food.
  •
Whoever thought of this is a genius. It's great to know that I am helping people in need, and it's really fun too!
  •
I was very suprised to see that someone came up with something like that. I think its a good way to donate rice. No cost and its fun.
  •
oh my goodness ive done this before and i feel so proud
  •
This website is a really good website to donate to people living in poverty.
  •
This is really cool, and really fun to do!! and, you're helping th world when you do it!!
  •
I've used this site many times before. It's cool because they have rice to donate, but you can help by answering simple questions. I see a lot of people in class doing it, and it's cool that we're all donating rice!!! :)
  •
that's really cool that they're donating rice for really easy questions.
  •
I have done this before. I think it's pretty amazing how much people can donate just by playing this game. This helps people in poverty so even though it's not an article, this helps so many people. :)
  •
This is a really cool website and i loved how while learning stuff you get to help people in need.
  •
I agree with everyone. Ive done this before and I think its really cool how you can help people by answering questions. It is also fun and you are helping make a difference.
  •
Wow, this makes me want to keep playing. This is a genius idea, and it makes a big impact. Imagine if this website was broadcasted over the news, so many people would feel obligated to donate.
  •
I like this article because i think it's cool how you can donate rice that's really interesting
  •
just think of all the people we can help if everyone donates and takes the quiz. We can help make an effort to make a difference to people in poverty. They should have more websites like this. Something for like homeless people. Everytime you answer something, something can be donated to a homelss shelter or something. I dont know, sounds good to me.
  •
Its so nice that you can take a quiz and donate rice at the same time.
  •
I don't get how I donate rice by taking a quiz... But alright...
  •
This is a very very fun game, i got to donate over 500 grains of rice :)
  •
I donated over 520 grains of rice. The only one I missed was obligatory what does that mean?
  •
thats a really cool website. Imagine if everyone did it just a couple times a week it could really help countries that are really struggeling with poverty.
  •
I really like this website, how you can donate grains of rice for answering questions. It's like a two way street. People in poverty get rice while we get to learn. I just wish they had some harder questions. These are too easy for me. but i did donate 530 grains of rice!
  •
That's a good way to help. It's entertaining for the viewer/player as well as helpful. Navigating the site you're bound to learn more about the hungry and poor.
  •
Wow this was really a good idea! i donated 720 grain of rice :) This was really fun and however thought of this idea, it was a really good one! Godd article Marlee!
  •
i like the quiz, but i don't know if they actually donating rice. if they do donate rice i think it is a smart idea, but if they don't donate rice, then what is the point?
  •
This website is sweet! I think this was a really cool way to start fighting poverty while learning new things. It does go slowly but i will definatly do this again sometime.
  •
This is awesome. I'm enjoying helping people by just answering questions. I hope that is true that they will donate the rice.
  •
I took the quiz and donated 1000 grains of rice LITERALLY. That is also a great way to fight poverty and it is a awesome idea. But they should have more publicity to get to millions more people.
  •
I donated 500 grains of rice by answer 50 questions in a row. This is a great idea, because it gives people a game that teaches them, and they're also helping to feed the less fourtunate! I wonder what other ideas we could spin off of this?
  •
Duuuddeee! We should totally try to like tell the seventh graders about this and like make them take it! We could have like a day of like donating rice (:
  •
This is a great website to do something simple to help out families in need. Even though it's only 10 grains of rice per question that can add up very quickly.

The Columbus Dispatch - Local/State | The Columbus Dispatch - 0 views

Article on Ohio have one of the highest "rates of poverty and some of the lowest household income. This came as an eye opener that poverty is closer to us than we sometimes think. In our perspective Ohio would never look like the place with one of the highest rates of poverty and lowest household income but this article really opened my eyes.
  •
I didn't know that OHIO had one of the most highest poverty rates.

poverty - 4 views

this shows the results of poverty and how it affects world hunger. I was very surprised after i read about how much things most people that are being affected by poverty can't get. I was also very surprised on how many children die of poverty in under 5 years.

i like this one it seems very helpful in ways and that helped with what i was looking for!
  •
This site gave me a lot of useful new facts without adding a lot of fluff. I found it interesting and an easy to read if you dislike your topic and would otherwise give up.
  •
i agree this article is a very good article with problems and solutions about poverty
  •
D: That's so sad.I know there are a lot of people out there who can't get the kind of healthcare they need, and I know a ton of people who go to the hospital often. If there are that many in my neighborhood, I wonder how many can't afford to go to the hospital.
  •
This article was really sad, I couldn't believe that over 250,000 children die from hunger each week. I think it gave lots of good information without too much to read.
  •
Great article. It was sad but atleast it wasn't trying to hide the truth or make it sound not as bad as it is. The fact that so many children die cannot be ignored...
  •
With so many children dieing I almost wish people wouldn't have babies if they can't feed them because in the end the child will die.
  •
Its disappointing because at the end of world war 2 scientist that with the advancement of technology, poverty would disappear but it didn't ;(

The Intersection of Poverty and Sexual Violence - 3 views

  •
This article is about the statistical relationship between people who are in poverty and people who are sexually abused. It shocked me to see the direct correlation between people in poverty and those that are raped.
  •
When I read the article I wonder what other abuses lead people to quit their jobs and live in poverty.
  •
oh my god thats really...wow. i mean, you hear about this stuff in books and things, but not only in newspapers and things, you know? kind of like with declan, it makes me think about what other things people might do because of poverty

Causes of, Solutions to Poverty - 0 views

  •
This article has listed a few of the ways people have made the poverty number drop. The author of the article has also stated their opinions on how we should help the people in poverty by helping them learn how to sustain by themselves, not giving them aid.
  •
I don't like how the person makes demands for the world to follow. It shows nothing about if countries are already trying to get rid of poverty or how it would mess with their economic structure. Some countries have health care for everyone but other parts of their economy is messed up.

Stories of Poverty - 4 views

  •
These are the stories of many children and tennagers tat are facing poverty. One of the articles I find really disturbing is the one about white Guinea Worms, which grow in the body after drinking contaminated water and eventually burst throught the skin, to be pulled out by hand. These parasites can grow to be meters in length.

It's sad to see these stories about children growing up in poverty. I was reading one about a girl named Yuleini and it said while her mother and stepfather were at work, she had to cook meals for her 4 siblings, wash their clothes, and play with them. She is taking on a lot of responsiblity and she will grow up to be a good mother to her children.
  •
I read about a 13 year old girl, and she coooks, cleans and does almoast everything for the family. very sad
  •
it makes me feel so lucky for what I have... :/
  •
Those worms are disgusting. ;_; It's amazing what these people have to go through.
  •
I can't beleive that people actualy have to go through that. Sometimes i just live in my own little world, and am oblivous to things around me. I notice the weird things, like how there is a gree bug in the snow, but i don't notice the walls, or the poverty going on around me. It's just unreal that things like worms can actually live in your body.
  •
curaline i love it! i mean not in the way you'd think but it the way of how its very good. i like how it gives the childs story and such and age makes me like living in ohio.
  •
the stories are so touching! I love Himal's story, just because it was so intense
  •
It's so sad to see what people have to go through, and it's great that these organizations are providing them education.
  •
I think that is was so sad when the kids were talking about their dreams one day of going to college and pulling themselves out of poverty. Hopefully one day the United States and even us can help them to achieve their goals and dreams.

In Ohio, Marriage Drops the Probability of Child Poverty by 87 Percent - 1 views

  •
this article has a suprising chart that shows the difference in poverty rates between a married couple with kids and a single mother with the same amount of kids
  •
Do you think that even if a single mother had a good education she would still be in poverty? I think so IFF the child or children could take care of themselves long enough for the mother to find a decent job to support the family.
  •
that very interesting. i never would have thought that married families are at less risk of poverty affecting them, but now that i think about it i guess they could both work and would get more money then one person.

POVERTY: K through homeless - 4 views

  •
This article is about a woman in New York who helps children who are homeless get free and reduced lunches, transportation and immediate enrollment.
  •
I think what Miss Kilduff is doing is very unselfish--a great quality! It's a shocking fact that there are 51,316 homeless students in NYC alone! And 1.1 million in the entire state of New York! It's not hard to believe that poverty exists in such a city, but the numbers are outstanding. I really hope that Kilduff keeps up her work, and inspires others to reach out, too.
  •
I very much agree with Roseann Kilduff. I used to go to a private school which people are not that wealthy but are not in poverty. Now in a public school, I found out it's very different. Their are people I know that are in poverty which has opened my eye more to reality. Poverty is scene daily, even if others don't recognize it.

Stop Child Poverty: Actions Against Poverty - 2 views

  •
This article gives info on how to end child poverty. I think it is incredibly useful to know what teenagers can do stop child poverty. Teens think that they can't do anything to help but they can in so many ways
  •
I really liked how there was a variety of ways to take action that are realistic.
  •
There are more ways to help than I thought. I think organizing a dinner would be a great idea, we might be able to do it here at Phoenix!
