Climate Change: Key Indicators - 0 views

  •
This NASA site is a collection of very readable graphs that clearly show change over a student's lifetime in the areas of carbon dioxide, Artic Sea ice, sea level,  global surface temperature, etc.  Each graph includes a brief explanation "What Does This Mean?"

Games! - 0 views

  •
This site, by the EPA, has a great climate change quiz that would be a great pretest for a climate change study.  It is easy to navigate and very readable informational text.  Not many visuals, so the content would be valued as content, not pictures.  This site is progressive, starting with What is Climate Change? and goes through We CAN Make A Difference!  All the way through the site there are links back to previous pages of concepts kids might have trouble understanding. Very reader friendly.

NEON - NASA Educators Online Network - 0 views

  •
Possibly the most helpful resource I have found for verifying scientific information I am considering presenting to my 4th graders.  Not only does the NASA NEON network connect you with other teachers, it also connects you with NASA scientists, NEON staff, and others in the know about all sorts of topics related to global climate change.  I'm not sure about other topics as I haven't explored that avenue . . . YET!

ScienceCasts: What Happened to all the Snow? - YouTube - 0 views

  •
This NASA ScienceCast asks the question "What Happened to all the Snow?"  It explains the phenomena of La Nina and Artic Oscillation as it relates to the record high temperatures found in 2012.  It has a nice correlation to sled dogs being confused by the changes which would cross-connect to our Iditarod study.

Post List[Fragile Oasis] - 0 views

  • we wanted to savor our last moments as we took a couple of laps around our Fragile Oasis before coming back down.
  • “Down to Earth” after their half year onboard the International Space Station. God Speed & Welcome Home Guys!
  • Time-lapse video like this one is about as close as we can come to show what astronauts see in space.
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • The flashes of light you see throughout the video is lightning captured by the individual frames of the photography. Yet, only a small percentage of the actual lightning is captured in the imagery
  • Fragile Oasis story
  • I hope it will help people follow our missions not as spectators, but as fellow crewmembers, inspired to help improve life on our planet.
  • Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) initiative, will bring together thousands of people in over 31 locations around the globe to “hack for humanity”. Random Hacks of Kindness is a community of innovation that brings together subject matter experts with volunteer technologists to develop open technology solutions to global challenges.
  • The technology challenge initiated by Fragile Oasis for RHoK is to engage and unify humanitarian organizations in collaborating to tackle problems facing our planet – starting with the current Fragile Oasis projects but ready to reach far beyond.
  • For almost all of human history, the vast majority of people in the world believed that it was impossible to fly to the Moon - simply because it had never been done before. Human ingenuity and the determination of the human spirit proved that it was possible Today, many people believe that it is impossible to solve many of the problems of the world. It is widely believed that is impossible to lift the poor out of poverty.
  • If we can land on the Moon and return to Earth safely, if nations can join together and build an enormous research facility on orbit, then by working together we can solve many of the challenges facing our planet --including the alleviation of poverty.  Nothing is impossible.
  • On one hand, we can clearly see the indescribable beauty of the planet we have been given; on the other hand is the unfortunate reality of life for a significant number of our beautiful planet’s inhabitants.
  • We look down and realize that we are all riding through the Universe together on this spaceship we call Earth, that we are all interconnected, that we are all in this together, that we are all family. This is what we call the “Orbital Perspective.”
  • We live in a world where the possibilities are limited only by our imagination -- and our will to act. It is within our power to eliminate suffering and poverty. We have the resources and technology to overcome almost all of the challenges facing our planet, yet nearly a billion people do not have access to clean water, countless go to bed hungry every night, and many die from preventable and curable disease.
  • by helpong those that are striving to improve life on Earth so that it is not only visibly beautiful, but where life is beautiful for all.

The video Ron and others put together is stellar.  Anyone who watches will surely come away with a renewed sense of how fragile our Earth and its inhabitants really are, and the self-initiative to take action
  •
Astronaut Ron Garan's blog reflecting on the power of collaboration to solve the Earth's problems.  The site includes a BEAUTIFUL time lapse photography video of the Earth taken the last week he was aboard the International Space Station.  Another video posted on the same site is a challenge from Ron to all of Earth's inhabitants:  If human ingenuity can land humans on the moon, figure out how to house people for extended times in space, and how to get a research vehicle on Mars, we surely can figure out how to solve issues like hunger, climate change, and greenhouse emissions here on Earth.  This would make a great final video message to show a class who has figured out their carbon footprint and challenge them to go farther.

This is a link to the NASA video "Our World: Going Green? What Does That Mean?  It is a 5 minutes video that would be a great introduction to a unit on climate change.  It overviews everything from what the earth is to taking action to live "greener."
