Pacific Pinball Museum | Alameda, California | Atlas Obscura - 1 views

  • The Pacific Pinball Museum outside of Oakland offers over 90 "playable, historic pinball machines" with the signature lights, bells and whistles of the greatest models. Like most museums, the PPM owns a much larger collection - over 400 machines! - but only some are available for the public to see. From Oct. 1 - 3, 2010, the Pacific Pinball Museum will host the Pacific Pinball Exposition in collaboration with the Pinball Revival Company

This is a project for my wife and I to enjoy together. We both love this kind of stuff!

WOW. That's a lot of itty bitty work. I'm so jealous. My father-in-law had a machine similar to this (he ran an officer's club in Hanoi during the war). It sat in his basement for years and one day he decided to have a yard sale and got rid of it for $50. I was crushed.

Damn!! that hurts just to hear.... Hey you can find restorable machines for $20-40 these days. I have already worked out the gas budget to go and pick up 2 more awesome looking machines. Gotta go to Fort Wayne, IN to get em so 2 $25 machines end up costing us $75 each to get them home. Now I just need the gas money and the time to go...and no, there is no argument with Kim, she's got the bug too!

"Vintage Nishijin pachinko machines date back to the 1960's and 70's. At that time a lot of pachinko machines were sold by the Japanese Pachinko parlors where they were first used and exported to the United States. So despite their Japanese origins there are a fair number of them around in the States. The vintage machines operate mechanically (gravity powered), except for the lights. Because Japan used a different type of power supply to the US, the importers of machines in the 60s and 70s would usually remove the power supply components from the machines before shipping. This meant that the lights on the game board no longer worked. But since the rest of the machine required no power they were still perfectly playable. These days vintage Pachinko machines are gaining popularity as collector's items and you'll often see them coming up on ebay. You'll also find parts are available online via ebay or online shops."
