Rethinking Time to see Education as a Lifelong Journey - Lessons from Blueback - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Blueback is a beautiful metaphor for life and particularly of the life we live in schools. When looked at close up, with an eye on the details, the experience of school is one of passing and recurring cycles. When looked at from a distance, with an eye on the whole, there are elements of constancy, the throughlines which bring meaning to our experience and which have as their consequence the residuals of education.

TinEye Reverse Image Search - 0 views

  •
This is one to keep an eye on. If you want to check out where an image may have come from or to see if one of your images has been used elsewhere then this is the tool to use. At present the database is small so you may not yet find the details you are looking for but as they say, watch this space.... "TinEye is a reverse image search engine. You can submit an image to TinEye to find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions. TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks."

The Prose of Blogging (and a Few Cons, Too) : November 2008 : THE Journal - 0 views

  • At the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, Principal Chris Lehmann champions integration of technology into all aspects of the curriculum. But he emphasizes that the educational purpose comes first.
  • set out to show that blogging could improve students' writing skills by making them write more frequently and comment on one another's work.
  • Blogging is relatively new, with little research to support its academic benefits, so Bachenheimer's study is an eye-opener.

Image Forensics : Error Level Analysis - 0 views

  •
Error level analysis seeks to prove that whether or not an image has been altered. It takes the image and shows differing error levels throughout it, strongly suggesting some form of digital manipulation. Areas to note are the lips and shirt, as well as the eyes. All are at significantly different error levels than their surroundings. Presumably, colours have been altered and areas brightened.

Food pets die for and protect your pets - Ann Martin - 0 views

  •
Ann Martin's book, Foods Pets Die For, provides information rarely seen anywhere else. It is a shocking, sometimes disgusting look into the pet food industry, and should open the reader's eyes regarding the sources of the "nutrition" most Americans trust as their pets' sole food source.

Tinkering with Old Technology - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
As technology evolves and its inner workings increasingly disappear from view, replaced with solid-state parts hidden by glass, aluminium and plastic, our understanding of what makes the world operate is similarly impeded. When machinery from just a few decades ago is viewed a world of moving parts, linkages, cogs and levers is revealed. These mechanical objects contain an inherent beauty and inspire curiosity in ways that modern devices with their pristine surfaces and simplified design language do not. Opportunities to explore devices from the past open our eyes and lead us to new questions of how our devices function, how machines do the jobs we need them to do and how engineers solve problems.

Ten ideas from Eye on the Future - 0 views

  •
On Saturday I had the opportunity to join a group of very enthusiastic teachers to hear Alan November and Carl Jarvis speak at North Turramurra Primary School. That so many educators from across Sydney were keen to give up a Saturday is a testament to their desire to improve their teaching but also a measure of the respect these speakers garner.

Why we fear data and how our perception can change. - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Data occupies a somewhat curious place within education. Mention it to teachers and you tend to get one of two responses. One group will roll their eyes and with great sarcasm how data is "so exciting". The other group responds with something akin to "actually I quite like data" indicating that experience has shown them that they are members of a small group. The question is why do some people find data to be a useful and fascinating tool while others see it as a good method for inducing sleep?
