To celebrate the role of the public domain in our societies | Public Domain Day - 1 Jan... - 0 views

  •
"On this day of great celebrations worldwide, we also invite to celebrate the impressive wealth of knowledge, information and beauty that today, like every year on this day, becomes freely available to humankind. Every year on New Year's Day, in fact, due to the expiration of copyright protection terms on works produced by authors who died several decades earlier, thousands of works enter the public domain - that is, their content is no longer owned or controlled by anyone, but it rather becomes a common treasure, available for anyone to freely use for any purpose."

Interesting website that lists what copyright works enter the public domain each year. Leon Trotsky has just been added to the list.

Larry Magid: Online Safety Tied to Real World Behavior - 2 views

  • technology can change the way people bully, but bullying is still bullying. Whether it happens through text messages, on Facebook, in a chat room or in the schoolyard, it still involves repeated harassment and typically an imbalance of power between the victim and the bully.
  • Cyberbullying does have unique aspects, though -- the bully can be invisible and actions can quickly go viral, involving lots of people "piling on" a single victim.
  •
"Internet safety" is mostly about behavior in the blended world where kids live on and offline. How they treat themselves and others has a big impact on whether their experiences will be good or bad.  And it's true for adults as well. While there are unique aspects to protecting yourself online, many of the major online risk factors -- especially for children -- have their offline equivalents.

ACMA - Spam & e-Security - 0 views

  •
Another of the really great ACMA pages, this one deals with spam in all its permutations. From the Nigerian email through to telemarketers who are acting outside the do not call register the site has advice on how to avoid, report, protect yourself and complain about spam. There is also a listing of the latest current scams. On the page you can also download SpamMATTERS which works with Outlook. Then when you delete spam from your email it will also lodge a report with ACMA automatically. Neat.
