Oracle's platform for the hospitality industry offers comprehensive and integrated software, cloud offerings and hardware solutions for hotels, casinos, table and quick-service restaurants, sports and entertainment venues, and cruise operations from small independents to large global chains. Amazon just obtained a new competitor for its Amazon Web Services cloud hosting and development platform. Oracle is going head-to-head with Amazon with a slew of more than 24 new additions to the Oracle Cloud Platform. Oracle's new integrated cloud services include infrastructure, platform and software delivered as a service. Specific cloud-based services include hosted Exadata-based production databases, archive storage, Big Data, enterprise mobility, and application integration. Oracle says it offers the same products, with 100% compatibility, in the cloud and on premises, which means that companies can move to and from the cloud without changing applications. Furthermore, workloads can be moved to the cloud instantly. "Oracle is growing really fast," said Larry Ellison, CTO of Oracle, in public remarks. "Oracle is the only company on the planet that can deliver a complete, integrated, standards-based suite of services at every layer of the cloud. Those technology advantages enable us to be much more cost-effective than our competitors. Our new Archive Storage service goes head-to-head with Amazon Glacier and it's one-tenth their price."

Retail IT is being transformed. CIOs are shifting from proprietary systems to package solutions and from an emphasis on cost reduction to a solid bump in IT capital spending. A strong customer focus means CIOs are fixing their attention on channel integration and analytics that will help them spot and anticipate shopper preferences more quickly. "Talking about re-engineering the foundation of retail IT may not be the sexy side of technology, but it's critical," Webster says. "If a company jumps into mobile-assisted in-store selling ... but doesn't have accurate visibility of inventory across the enterprise, what have they accomplished?" That's a point of view echoed by Gartner vice president of research Jeff Roster. "The big attack has to be on infrastructure," he says. "There are still a whole lot of retail companies out there that need to retire legacy systems and get out of the proprietary code writing business. Once they move to packaged systems, the opportunity to decrease infrastructure costs and reshape the business around today's customer can move forward at a quicker pace."

Oracle (www.oracle.com) introduced the MICROS Workstation 6, using Microsoft Windows Embedded 8.1 and the latest Intel Atom processor. It works in concert with mobile, cloud and social media to deliver consistent, integrated content across multiple sources, and can offer guest recommendations, special promotion rollouts and more. The Workstation 6 incorporates the design elements of a mobile POS in an ergonomic, all-in-one design with a 15.6-inch-wide HD touchscreen, and a spill and impact resistant enclose. Additionally, it can be mounted on a stand that allows staff to adjust the screen angle or swivel it for guest to view. The integrated, three-track magnetic card reader allows for 3DES or AES encryption upon swiping, and includes six USB ports for attaching printers, scanners, cash drawers and more.

"It's rare that a retailer just wants to discuss commerce by itself," Ian Davis, senior director of product management for Oracle Commerce, told Chain Store Age. "They want to discuss social media, marketing, customer service and sales." Oracle Commerce Cloud's SaaS infrastructure allows online businesses to launch responsive storefronts across desktop and mobile devices. Pre-integrated core commerce features include search / navigation, recommendations, promotions, reporting, payments, design templates and SEO. A unified experience management console enables catalog, content, design and merchandising management. Responsive design and HTML5 user interfaces let users build additional functionality or develop integrations that connect Commerce Cloud with other systems while also allowing consumption for third-party development efforts. "We use an API-first development approach," said Davis. "Exposing APIs makes the solution easy to use." Davis also commented on Commerce Cloud's capabilities to seamlessly fit into retailers' business-to-business efforts, as well as their business-to-consumer markets....
