Cole explains that an open source application that's newer and relies on the power of community might not have had the time to catch up with commercial software's level of development. The article also notes that Oracle has utilized open source for the types of benefits that wider collaboration can bring. Cole notes that using open source makes Oracle's products better, and development has taken significant leaps forward because of it. Cole concludes the article with feedback on how institutions should move forward when considering open source solutions.

The December 18 edition of Campus Technology includes the following article highlighting the release of Oracle NoSQL Database 2.0. The article notes that this version adds support for storage and retrieval of large database objects, such as documents and images, as well as improved performance and tighter integration with Oracle Database and Hadoop environments. The article also notes that this version is designed to fit seamlessly into an enterprise IT stack.

It also uses the Data Guard feature for disaster recovery capabilities.
