The October 22 issue of Campus Technology include an article highlighting two recent Oracle announcements regarding Oracle Exadata Database Machine and new features released for Oracle's PeopleSoft Campus Solutions. The article notes that Northern Illinois University (NIU) implemented two Oracle Exadata Database Machines and includes comment from Steven Pace, associate director of the Division of Finance and Facilities at NIU. He notes that Oracle Exadata Database Machine improved the university's administrative system availability and reliability, and accelerated batch run times. The article also notes that University of Arkansas implemented two Oracle Exadata Database Machines to improve the performance of its PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and Oracle WebCenter Content. Additionally, Brigham Young University consolidated 50 database servers and storage systems with Oracle Exadata Database Machine to help improve performance of its Oracle campus systems. Finally, the article also includes information regarding the new features Oracle released for its PeopleSoft Campus Solutions suite. The article notes the new program-based enrollment functionality is designed to help students plan their path to degree completion, and the new assessment feature helps instructors to define and assess any type of learning activities.

The November 7 issue of Campus Technology includes an article highlighting the announcement that University of Minnesota implemented Oracle Exadata Database to improve the efficiently of its database administration and reduce cost. The article notes that hosting critical business applications under a single Oracle Exadata architecture has made it easier for the university to deliver database-wide updates and manage the system. The article includes comment from Patton Fast, senior director and enterprise architecture, University of Minnesota, who notes that the Exadata platform has been an enabler to reduce total cost of ownership related to supporting Oracle databases because they were able to drive the adoption of best practices and dramatically reduce the amount of infrastructure required.

The November/December issue of Oracle Magazine included an article about how organizations use Oracle Exadata Database Machine for increased efficiency, private cloud solutions, consolidation, and database as a service (DBaaS). The article highlights the University of Minnesota's DBaaS implementation to create its database hotel, which it developed to provide faster, more flexible, and more efficient service to all university departments. The university has two Oracle Exadata Database Machines and Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) for high availability. It also uses the Data Guard feature for disaster recovery capabilities. The university can now return registration results within seconds, even during peak registration periods, and through centralized IT, it enables departments to manage their own databases.

The article notes that this version adds support for storage and retrieval of large database objects, such as documents and images, as well as improved performance and tighter integration with Oracle Database and Hadoop environments. The article also notes that this version is designed to fit seamlessly into an enterprise IT stack.

Oracle has announced that its commercial Database Lite offering for mobile devices is now capable of synchronising with SQLite databases.

The November 30 issue of University Business includes the following article highlighting that University of Minnesota selected Oracle Exadata Database Machine to reduce its data center footprint and enhance performance and manageability.  The article notes that by hosting its IT environment on two Oracle Exadata Database Machine half racks, the University of Minnesota consolidated more than 200 Oracle database instances into fewer than 20, enabling it to reduce data center floor space and total cost of ownership.

The press release notes that colleges and universities are driving consolidation, reducing operating expenses, and improving application performance to support peak registration periods. Additionally, the press release highlights University of Arkansas, Northern Illinois University, and Brigham Young University's improvements utilizing Oracle Exadata Database Machine.

Oracle has launched the latest version of Database Lite, designed to address the rising number of mobile workers requiring access to databases on the move.

The January 13 edition of Campus Technology includes the following article highlighting Oracle's release of the Oracle Database Firewall for MySQL Enterprise Edition.  The article notes that the upgrade includes new reporting capabilities for improved regulatory compliance.

The July 11 edition of Campus Technology included the following article highlighting Stephen F. Austin (SFA) University's upgrade to Oracle Exadata Database Machine with an Oracle Exadata quarter rack to support its enterprise resource planning (ERP). The article notes that SFA had previously used a combination of solutions from multiple vendors but had a system that was unreliable and lacked scalability. Further, the article explains that the university can now support up to 2,000 concurrent users on its ERP and SIS systems, has a system with fewer bottlenecks and downtime, and has reduced staff overtime and simplified the system upgrade process.

...A good example of a core project Wolfe started was the re-architecture of the company's front-end Oracle ATG e-commerce platform to the Amazon Web Service (AWS) public cloud. This was key to enhancing customer experience across Shop Direct's retail websites, with availability the main area of focus. The retailer's entire e-commerce infrastructure now sits on the cloud - including ATG and Oracle's enterprise data discovery platform Endeca, as well as the AWS-provided Elastic Load Balancing and Relational Database services, which now support Shop Direct's database. "The migration was a good example of that drive to get service under control, and since our shop is always open, availability is critical to us and therefore the first thing to tackle," says Wolfe.
