Such free cooperation can only be hindered ‘artificially’, through either legal means ( intellectual property regimes) or through technical restrictions such as  Digital Rights Management, which essentially hinder the social innovation that can take place.

The expansion of peer production is dependent on cultural/legal conditions. It requires;open and free raw cultural material to use; participative structures to process it; and commons-based property forms to protect the results from private appropriation.

In most cases, distribution beats decentralization and centralization as the best way to deal with  complexity.

Auch das Internet hat sich verändert. Durch Phänomene wie Crowdsourcing kam es zu einer Amateurisierung ganzer Berufssparten. Sie arbeiten derzeit an einem journalistischen Projekt, bei dem Crowdsourcing benutzt wird, um Daten über das US-Gesundheitssystem zu erheben. In Österreich stecken diese Konzepte noch in den Kinderschuhen. Gibt es große Unterschiede zwischen Europa und den USA? Sind europäische Journalisten verschlossener gegenüber solchen Methoden? Ich denke, dass es Unterschiede gibt. In den USA erwägen immer mehr Medienunternehmen Crowdsourcing zu verwenden. Bei meinem Projekt geht es darum, Daten von Radiohörern zu sammeln und sich die Kosten für ihre Gesundheitsvorsorge anzusehen. Die Situation in Österreich kenne ich leider zu schlecht, um etwas darüber sagen zu können. Es gibt allerdings einige europäische Länder, die Crowdsourcing relativ früh aufgegriffen haben. Kurz nachdem mein Artikel darüber erschienen ist, gab es ein Experiment in den Niederlanden. Österreichs Bildungssystem gehört - umgelegt auf die Zahl der Schüler und Studenten - zu den teuersten in der OECD. Das geht aus der soeben veröffentlichten OECD-Studie "Bildung auf einen Blick 2010" (Education at a Glance) hervor. Kategorie: OECD-Studie Erstellt am 07.09.2010. Die Ausgaben pro Schüler bzw. Student betrugen 2007 von der Volks- bis zur Hochschule 10.974 US-Dollar (kaufkraftbereinigt) pro Jahr - ein Wert, der deutlich über dem OECD-Schnitt von 8.216 Dollar liegt. Übertroffen wird das nur von den USA (14.269 Dollar), der Schweiz (13.031) und Norwegen (11.967).

About a year ago I wrote a simple web application to present UK train times in a simple format for mobile phone users.

When I wrote the app none of the official train timetable sites could do this and I don’t believe any can now.

To reiterate – I built this because it was convenient and would be useful to others.  Not to make a profit. …and today National Rail killed it.

Tools for doing science are much harder to envision and build.  But these sorts of tools are much more likely to see uptake and use by the community, simply because scientists are more interested in doing science than they are in talking about science.

In the past few months, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) asked us how a Netflix Prize sequel might affect Netflix members' privacy, and a lawsuit was filed by KamberLaw LLC pertaining to the sequel.

In light of all this, we have decided to not pursue the Netflix Prize sequel that we announced on August 6, 2009.We will continue to explore ways to collaborate with the research community and improve our recommendations system so we can constantly improve the movie recommendations we make for you. So stay tuned.

While their overall assessment anticipates that humans’ use of the internet will prompt institutional change, many elaborated with written explanations that expressed significant concerns over organization’s resistance to change. They cited fears that bureaucracies of all stripes – especially government agencies – can resist outside encouragement to evolve. Some wrote that the level of change will affect different kinds of institutions at different times. The consensus among them was that businesses will transform themselves much more quickly than public and non-profit agencies.

Many selected the “change” option, but said they were not sure drastic change will occur in organizations by the 2020 time frame. They said the most significant impact of the internet on institutions will occur after that. Some noted this change will cause tension and disruption.

Having a terms-of-service agreement with these new media providers will make it easier for government agencies to create pages and use them to dramatically increase access to information, offer education on government services, and further empower citizens to interact with government.
