There are two product lines under development; the da Vinci class of ODF plugins for Microsoft Office (for versions 97, 2000 and 2003), and, the ODF InfoSet Engine and APi.   The former is for users to create and edit ODF files in their existing Microsoft Office installations and the latter is for application developers needing a lightweight but extremely powerful ODF-centric universal conversion and layout engine.

People are agog that Microsoft has announced support for Open Document Format (ODF), but I'm not sure why. This was a foregone conclusion once Microsoft figured out how to move lock-in above the file level to the content network. In other words, to Sharepoint. Microsoft has been hell-bent on getting enterprises to dump content into its proprietary Sharepoint repository, calling it the next Windows operating system. I call it the future of Microsoft lock-in.

Interoperability is one of the primary reasons why I like XML in general and ODF in particular.

To provide feedback, where necessary, to the ODF TC on ways in which the standard could improve interoperability; 3. To produce a set of implementation guidelines; 4. To define interoperability with related standards by the creation of profiles or technical reports; 5. To coordinate, in conjunction with the ODF Adoption TC, OASIS InterOp demos related to ODF; The IIC TC may also liaise with other standard bodies whose work is leveraged in present or future ODF specifications. These include, but are not limited to, the W3C and ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34.
