ODF adoption continues - has it 'crossed the chasm'? - 0 views

"There's a certain point in any technology's adoption that you step back and think to yourself "there's no going back now". It's then that you realize the technology has "crossed the chasm" and whether some would wish it away or whether early adopters start testing a new "next generation" that technology will still be here to stay. I **think** ODF is there now"

"Alternatively, I would have expected Microsoft to deal with confusing bits of the ODF specification by referring to existing implementations. How did OpenOffice.org deal with formulas in ODF 1.1? If nothing else, I would have liked to see the Excel team provide users with a pop-up dialog advising that their ODF spreadsheet formulas had been stripped out."

"This morning, i had some opportunity to discuss this issue with Betti Alisjahbana, ex president director of IBM Indonesia, which is now head of AOSI (Indonesian Open Source Association). Her team has been aware of this issue and they have started to move on to make ODF as the standard for office document format. The process might take some time, but at least, there is a significant progress since AOSI was born last year."

"It's clear that all these examples match the same pattern. Now the question is: how long will they manage to fool everyone? I have to admit that in many countries this strategy works well enough. Many important people in Portugal were convinced that OOXML and the interoperability announcement were honest and transparent initiatives. What will they think in face of this ODF implementation nonsense? Haven't things gone too far?"

"Oracle is a key supporter of open standards such as ODF and we believe this only strengthens that stance. This acquisition could prove fruitful for Open Office and ODF support in the enterprise. Both Oracle and Sun's commitments to open standards based products and services that enable customer choice and effective integration amongst the variety of technology it takes to run a business is a win for technology consumers."

"I think ODF is a very complex issue and maybe thats the reason why I did not find one movie that was getting the topic accross in a nice way. Most talks about ODF are highly technical or theoretically. I wish we would have something like some short 2-3 minute scenes where it is shown why MS Office is bad and OO.org and ODF is good."
