The Leading Global Thinkers of 2013 - Foreign Policy - 1 views

  •
This is a list of the leading global thinkers. I found just reading through the list is inspiring and allows us to get a better grasp of the issues that we must consider and the advancements that are being made. I believe this list echos our time in history.
  •
I found this super interesting! A great compilation of inspiring names that were split up into a good choice of categories. On top of that, it was a really cool read - the layout of the list was very creative and interactive.

A list of citizen science projects, apps & tools - 8 views

  •
I have gathered a large list of on-going citizen science projects and related tools which, I am sure, will benefit everybody interested in getting involved with hands-on science. Some of the projects in my list were mentioned in Clarkes' video lecture - I realize that some people were looking for references to those.

Hello! You have done a great job, very impressive. A couple of weeks ago I suggested and made a google spreadsheet in which everyone that wants to participate can add useful links to open knowledge resources. Would you like to drive this project with me? I would first ask you to add your links to the list and then we could look at tools in which we can make this interactive list look better, be more interactive and really make an onlile resource library. Please let me know what you think. What I do counts towards the final assesment and track, if we collaborate it could count for yours too, so you can benefit as well. I just feel like we could do more if we join forces. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lJ4GQpgdsFuELxmxb50WypzDq8-BLaAKL9OdKx8wBII/edit

Absolutely, this is a great idea - I will give it more thought tomorrow, but I am definately on board!
  •
    Buen aporte. ----- Good contribution.
  •
Gracias por tu contribución. I liked it so much because of "Marine LitterWatch" because it is a really big problem in Mexico, it can be applied by government to clean the populated beaches, el Cañón del Sumidero or Sumidero Canyon, and to sensibilize people. Additional to that, the app can be used in big cities to decide where to colocate new tanks of rubbish.

List of Predatory Publications - 3 views

  •
This list is not to be taken at face value (many of the publishers on it do have legitimate journals), but it serves as a reminder that there are many predatory journals that ask scholars to pay a lot of money to share their work, and many that also skirt traditional peer review processes in order to get money from unwary authors.

while the list is not provided as an evidence based indicator of relative credibility, Beall's site and blog do give quite a bit of 'food for thought'. There are certainly a number of dodgy publications, and like many I have been bombarded by invitations to publish, act as a guest editor etc. If you dont work for an organisation willing to pay the cost for open access publishing, it is an expensive option for individuals. There needs to be a clearer means of determining relevance and credibility of material at times.

Thank you for sharing this! I am in a process of publishing article myself. I've been though some interesting stuff as well. It is unbelievable how much fraud is going on in publishing world! I wish I could've known this website before (added to my bookmarks :)

Impact of Social Sciences - The Impact Factor and Its Discontents: Reading list on cont... - 0 views

  •
"Impact Factors have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years for their lack of transparency and for misleading attempts at research assessment. Last year the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) took a groundbreaking stance by explicitly disavowing the use of impact factors in assessment. This document has since drawn support worldwide and across the academic community. But what exactly are Journal Impact Factors and why are they cause for so much concern? Here is a reading list that highlights some helpful pieces we've been able to feature on the Impact blog over the last few years."

This is fantastic, an awesome resource, and an excellent starting point when developing open education resources!
  •
A great resource for developing courses using open ed resources. Thank you!
  •
Thank you for sharing this link! It not only embodies the spirit of the course and the diigo platform, but I am going to be greedy and bookmark it in my personal folder for use in my work as an Education Consultant.
  •
Thanks for posting this! it is indeed good sources for helping and encouraging people to learn with open access. Especially for those who is new to this 'open access' thing, this resource will help them to find the one that meet their need.
  •
thank you for these resources, we need this kind of initiative to improve and ease the access to education
  •
Thanks for sharing! I look forward to discovering and participating in Open education platforms and systems and sharing and contributing my thoughts, findings, information to others.
  •
This is so great! A list like this and the tools on it are the kinds of resources that do the most work, I think, towards multiplying access to education. I'm excited to explore all of these - thanks for sharing!
  •
Thanks for sharing this rich resource. I echo my colleagues' enthusiasm of this initiative. It seems like a great starting place for collaborators with all different backgrounds to come, develop and explore OER's.
  •
This is a very useful list. My favourite new resource from this list is LeMill. The tools section is a vast and diverse resource for a wide range of free apps and services.
  •
Many Open Education Resources (OER) have been introduced by governments, universities, and individuals within the past few years. OERs provide teaching and learning materials that are freely available and offered online for anyone to use. Whether you're an instructor, student, or self-learner, you have access to full courses, modules, syllabi, lectures, assignments, quizzes, activities, games, simulations, and tools to create these components.
  •
Thanks. An extensive list of resources. It may have been easier to use the list if it wasn't categorised only alphabetically but also further grouped into categories. It's still a valuable collection.

Open Access Journals Search Engine (OAJSE) : Library and Information Science - 6 views

  •
It's absolutely shameful that so few library and information science journals are open access: if any professional associations have a professional imperative towards improving the scholarly and cultural communication processes, it is librarians and other information professionals. This substantial (but still woefully short) list of open access journals that publish on library and information science will be a great resource for those of us in this course who are aspiring or practicing librarians. As we've heard over and over again throughout this course, advocacy is absolutely essential if open access principles are ever to receive wider acceptance and implementation; that's why it's important that, as practicing information professionals, we use open access publications for our research whenever we can. Lists like this one allow us to streamline our research in ways that align most closely with our professional values, though of course currently there just isn't enough published to allow us to rely exclusively on open access material for our own work. But having lists like this also allows us to determine where our research should be submitted; otherwise, by publishing in paid journals, we are only making things worse. This all being said, most lists like this that I could find online were either outdated and incomplete, part of a larger database that made hyperlinking difficult, or-like this one-they lacked any explanation of what sorts of articles could be found within; even this one hasn't been updated in eighteen months. But as is so often the case with open access, we must take what we can get.
  •
Hi, thank you for sharing the link! I agree with your comments. However, I am very pleased that I found my professional journal on the list :)

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy - 0 views

  •
Welcome to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP). From its inception, the SEP was designed so that each entry is maintained and kept up-to-date by an expert or group of experts in the field. All entries and substantive updates are refereed by the members of a distinguished Editorial Board before they are made public. Consequently, our dynamic reference work maintains academic standards while evolving and adapting in response to new research. You can cite fixed editions that are created on a quarterly basis and stored in our Archives (every entry contains a link to its complete archival history, identifying the fixed edition the reader should cite). The Table of Contents lists entries that are published or assigned. The Projected Table of Contents also lists entries which are currently unassigned but nevertheless projected.

Predatory open access publishing - 0 views

  •
I was reading one of the week 12 additional resources, PKP School: Becoming a Reviewer http://pkpschool.sfu.ca/becoming-a-reviewer/ and came across the term Predatory Open Access Publishing. I guess no matter what, someone is going to try to make a buck. There is also a site that others have posted here, http://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/ that is where Beall's list is housed. Beall's list is a list of potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers - a good place to check if you are thinking of writing or reviewing for a journal, if it's on the list do more digging and research on the journal itself before committing to anything. The journal names all sound pretty impressive so you can't tell by name alone.

Open Access Scholarly Journal Directory - 4 views

  •
This list is a helpful tool for authors who are publishing their work in Open Access Journals. It is also helpful for librarians who are acting as advisors for Open Access publishing. Beall's List: Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers. This is a list of questionable, scholarly open-access publishers. It is recommended recommend that scholars read the available reviews, assessments and descriptions provided here, and then decide for themselves whether they want to submit articles, serve as editors or on editorial boards.
  •
The long list of predatory publishers and journals by Beall is quite daunting. Is this another indication of how cynical a person has to be in every aspect of life - even scholary pursuit? Thankfully there's a record to alert stakeholders of potentially unscrupulous publishers and unvalidated journals.
  •
As I was working on my final project I found myself only able to name 1 OA Journal: PLOS. I wanted to know if there were any other big players in the game, much like the top commercial journals. As a result, google came up with the above site, which works like an index or directory for OA Journals. It's good to see in light of the difficulties that closed access journals have been causing in countries that are digitally divided from affluent ones. Hopefully with the growth of open access titles we will see the digital divide and information gap close. Happy browsing! And please post any other open access titles you have come across! Lets popularize them in our network! One more: http://doaj.org/

Hi there! Thank you for sharing this resource. I think that it is extremely helpful to have a list of websites and pictures that I can use with respect to copyright listed on one page. There have been many times when I need to quickly find an image to use for a project, and have gotten caught up in trying to find a picture with an appropriate copyright license. I also did not know that images created by government employees were copyright exempt, and I really enjoyed searching through some of those sites!
  •
It's not only the Creative Commons part that is important but the Public Domain (CC0) pictures, that can be used.
  •
¿Can any picture be used without failing into copyright stops?
  •
Thanks for sharing! The list is very useful. But I'm not sure if it is actually "OK" for university students to use online sources (videos from YouTube, or images downloaded from Google) for academic purpose/ personal use when talking about "fair dealing".
  •
Again, thak for sharing, this tools can be very interesting for who want to create an educational blog Julia Echeverria

Is the 1% Rule Still Relevant? - 3 views

  •
Participatory media may still have a ways to go if the 1% rule is correct. That rules says that the consumption of online media runs along these lines 90% passive consumers, 9% participants; 1% initiators. This article provides three takes on the accuracy and relevancy of the 1% rule and provides a long list of resources to learn more.
  •
As a rough guide this will apply to OKMOOC students as well. Two of the course instructors will be the most active on the Google+ group, Twitter and Diigo. The big question is not who will be the top creator in the class, but who can effectively transform ideas gained and relations builded in new productive and profitable off line activities. Studies show that out of 100 MOOC students eventually 2 will finish the course with credit.
