    There's a lot to digest here, particularly if you want to read the whole report as well as the edited summary. I particularly liked the responses from JP Rangaswami: "The quality of real-time information that becomes available will take the guesswork out of much of capacity planning and decision-making......The net effect will be to reduce waste everywhere: in physical flows and logistics, in the movement of people and goods; in logical flows and logistics, in the movement of ideas and information; decisions will be made faster and better, based on more accurate information; prior errors in assumption and planning will be winkled out more effectively." On a personal note, I can see there might be benefits with the IoT, particularly the use of sensors and actuators for monitoring and improving health, but will it put the final nail in 'privacy' and enable marketers to push their products and control my thoughts 24 x 7 through the pervasive use of wearable devices and biological interfaces with technology?     This is my favorite article and it shows that old fashion publisher represent a barrier for knowledge flow, and they were misusing it. "Introduction:There is concern within democratic societies that a growing number of individuals are disconnecting from their role as citizens (Merritt and McCombs 2004: 47, Turner, G., 2005: 135, Dyrenfurth, N., 2005). Much of the blame for this disengagement has fallen upon the gatekeeping practices of journalism (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). These practices are often held to be counterproductive to journalism's primary purpose, which is to create an inclusive and diverse space for conversation between members of society about issues affecting their lives. Gatekeeping practices have the capacity to create gaps and silences, giving voice only to those already holding power. They give media corporations, politicians and large lobby groups the capacity to set the agenda on their terms and in their own best interests (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). "

    Me ha encantado el punto de vista mostrado en el artículo; no sólo por la defensa que hace de la educación científica de la ciudadanía, sino por el método que propone para conseguirlo: fomentar la participación en la investigación. Me ha recordado mucho al planteamiento que se hace en las escuelas de las materias de letras: No es lo mismo estudiar literatura con un profesor que no sólo te invita a leer los libros, sino que los comenta en su entorno social, histórico, político y cultural, que estudiar lengua y gramática desde el punto de vista del desglose de las oraciones en sujeto, predicado, complementos, frases subordinadas, etc. Aunque ambas son necesarias, sólo la primera ayuda a comprender la importancia de la lengua como herramienta de transmisión de cultura. La segunda es necesaria para comprender su complejidad y evolución, pero no ayuda demasiado a la toma de decisiones sobre el estado de la cultura en un país. Con la ciencia ocurriría algo parecido: hace falta una educación en "literatura científica" más que en "lenguaje científico" para que los ciudadanos seamos capaces de comprender las situaciones científicas que afectan a temas tan importantes como la salud, la biodiversidad o el cambio climático. ¡Gracias por compartir!

    Good article, thanks for sharing it. I think what trancends in this article is that the those who have power obviously want to maintain that position and therefore it is in their interest to lobby for a "bad", "uncreative" education system, so to say to deliberatly limit thought capacity. There are certainly many interesting aspects to what is written in this article, for example the part about Gramschis thoughts is directed on a discussion of social classes, and how those might lean right or left depending on their composition. But could it also be that the, so called, lower classes (i dont like that expression) are just not there to engage and participate in political discussion that draws the outlines of such things like the education system.

    Here in Spain we have a similar evolution of higher education; private postgraduate private schools give masters that guarantee the access to top jobposts, but they are not focused on analysis, creativity and critical minds, but on pure business. What you need to be on your future job post is what you learn. Public institutions are still on air, but they are struggling with less and less public resources to survive. So I guess this is not only going on in USA.

    Italy is going even worse...i'm an Adjunct Professor for maybe 1000 euro per year ... surviving by scholarships, call center mid term contracts, collaborations where i'm asked to pay for taxes the university should pay, all levels teaching.. I like "Some of the basic principles underlying effective pedagogy, such as small class size, individual attention and the importance of mentoring, are being sacrificed in order to increase head count, limit labor costs and create a one-size-fits-all educational experience." The problem is that universities are to make profits from fees (that's why they hire me instead of employing me) and offer any kind of courses, masters to increase their income! The problem is: how can we expect to increase the quality of learning as far as decisions are taking by political, business, organizational sides instead of scientific and educational ones?

Even it you are someone that does not have the capacity to use these resources, I believe that it is good to know where to find this source so that you can share it with others, or perhaps one day you will have the ability to use this resource more fully.

    Sí y no. No cabe duda que el conocimiento abierto favorece la diseminación de todo tipo de información, Pero, precisamente por la gran cantidad de información disponible, se pierden los filtros necesarios de calidad y pueden hacer que nos despistemos en nuestro objetivo principal leyendo mucha "paja" y artículos de relleno que pueden rozar el auto-plagio. Pero, aún así, en general, es mejor tener esa información de libre acceso, y utilizar herramientas informáticas para realizar una primera selección burda de información y, más adelante, a la información que ha sido filtrada de esa manera, volver a filtrarla ya con conciencia propia por cada usuario, en función de las necesidades que tenga en cada momento y de lo que considere más o menos relevante para su investigación, inquietud, necesidad, etc.

    Estoy de acuerdo pero debemos ser capaces de filtrar la información para no perdernos en la gran cantidad de información a la que tenemos de libre acceso.
