As my district's technology director, I love getting the maximum bang for my buck. Maybe it's because as a former classroom teacher, I know of other ways to spend money than on wires and chips. It could be that my midwestern hardheadedness insists that only fools use two mules when one mule will do. And I know it's a deep-seated distrust of anybody who wants to make a profit selling to schools.

Carl A. Harvey II has some thoughts on that. He's a nationally recognized school librarian and the 2011-12 AASL President. A few years ago he created a handout to describe for administrators the varied roles of the 21st century school librarian.

"How are AASL's new learning standards, the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, incorporated into the school library program? This publication from AASL takes an in-depth look at the strands of the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and the indicators within those strands." Fascinating change: In 2013, I'll be "ripping" DVDs to make clip compilations for media literacy. And I'll be encouraging K-12 teachers, school librarians, and technology educators to do the same.

The Information Fluency Continuum, developed by the New York City School Library System, provides a framework for the instructional aspects of a library program. The framework is based on three standards that form the basis for the skills and strategies that are essential for students to become independent readers and learners.

Adopt-A-Shelf is something I've been considering for my library for some time now. A few weeks ago, several librarians were discussing it on my state's listserv, so I thought I would start it in my library for the upcoming school year.

Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Thousands of businesses and non-profit organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events.

So a few weeks ago, I had this idea.  What if my 7th grade English students staged a flash mob poetry event at the food court of our local mall?  I kind of fell in love with this idea, even though I had no idea how to plan such a thing.  I was pretty sure the school and mall would never approve it anyway, so I figured, "Why not ask?"
