This was taken as excerpts from Melissa Dalton's post on Libs-Or: Oregon Poetic Voices (OPV) is a comprehensive digital archive of poetry readings that complements existing print collections of poetry across the state and is funded by the Library Services and Technology Act FFY2010. The state of Oregon possesses an unusually high number of nationally recognized writers, a very high proportion of whom are award-winning and otherwise notable poets. Additionally, there are active communities of emerging poets around the state, and poetry is regularly taught in the English curriculum of most Oregon schools. Until Oregon Poetic Voices began in 2010, there was no publicly accessible archive of recorded poetry by Oregon poets that could be used to maintain a record of poetry in performance, which is a vitally important aspect of interpretation and a valuable teaching tool. The Oregon Poetic Voices archive currently publishes over 200 prominent and emerging Oregon poets, including their biographies and poem texts alongside their recordings, and will soon feature historic performances recorded by KBOO, Fishtrap, and the Mountain Writers Series. Connecting K-6 Teachers With Great Books
My goal is to create a resource for teachers, home schoolers and anyone interested in quality books for children. Each title is one I have carefully evaluated and selected to support curriculum as well as your class read-alouds. Elementary school librarians are losing their jobs nationwide resulting in the loss of this valuable resource for students and teachers. I have 35 years experience working with kids and their books, so you can consider me your personal librarian!

PicLit - poetry activity!

"The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Donation Grant was created to help build collections and bring books into the lives of children in latchkey, preschool programs, faith-based reading projects, homeless shelters, charter schools and underfunded libraries." Applications are usually due in late January.

A school librarian created a list of resources related to holidays.

"As an initiative of the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) was created in 2002 to be a central and trusted source of scientific evidence for what works in education." Carl A. Harvey II has some thoughts on that. He's a nationally recognized school librarian and the 2011-12 AASL President. A few years ago he created a handout to describe for administrators the varied roles of the 21st century school librarian.

"Publishers have spent a lot of time and money building their own company Web sites with fresh information on their books and authors. The trouble is, very few book buyers visit them. In search of an alternative, three major publishers said on Friday that they would create a new venture, called Bookish.com, which is expected to make its debut late this summer. The site intends to provide information for all things literary: suggestions on what books to buy, reviews of books, excerpts from books and news about authors. Visitors will also be able to buy books directly from the site or from other retailers and write recommendations and reviews for other readers." As of early August 16 2011, the site is not ready. From the website's About page: "Read It Later lets you save what you find on the web to watch and read on any device, at anytime. It's been called 'a DVR for the web' by the New York Times, Business Week, Time, TechCrunch and more." You can access saved items online or offline, mark them as "read," and more. Use it with smart phones like iPhone and Android versions, with Internet browsers like Firefox and Safari, and applications like Flipboard and TweetBot.

The website's About Us section states that the "goal was to create a simple to use and easy to learn tool to help people organize their ideas in a way that make sense to them." Click on Help in the top right corner of the homepage for tips on how to use the site.

Critical Thinking Consortium: created this link to lessons/resources on "thoughtful books", some books are actually available online for printing and reference. "The Thoughtful Books series makes use of exemplary children's literature to help young readers learn to read critically and to thoughtfully consider ethical matters. Each resource in this series features specific tools supporting literacy development and encouraging the deliberataion of ethical considerations. Teachers and parents are encouraged to use the suggested activities to introduce the tools and then to encourage their young children to apply them in a variety of situations overtime, until the tools are used independently, selectively, and naturally."

Good for discussion starter on digital learners: "Since most of today's students can appropriately be labeled as "Digital Learners", why do so many teachers refuse to enter the digital age with their teaching practices? This presentation was created in an effort to motivate teachers to more effectively use technology in their teaching."
