    First-time biographers: a new prize of $2000, sponsored by the Biographers International Organization (BIO), includes publicity by BIO, and a year's free membership. The winner of the BIO/Hazel Rowley Prize for Best Proposal for a First Biography will be announced at BIO's fifth annual conference, to be held in Boston May 17, 2014. In addition to the $2000, the prize guarantees a close reading of your proposal by an agent who will bring your project to the attention of editors and publishers who are actively seeking to publish biography. BIO is a grassroots organization of writers, educators, publishing experts, readers and others who support the art and craft of biography. The deadline for applying is January 31, 2014.

    he Academy of American Poets is accepting applications for the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Lenore Marshall was a poet, novelist, essayist, and political activist whose work appeared in The New Yorker, The Saturday Review, and Partisan Review and who was the author of three novels, three books of poetry, a collection of short stories, and selections from her notebooks. In 1956, she helped found the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the citizens' organization that lobbied successfully for passage of the 1963 Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Established in 1975, the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize recognizes the author of the most outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous calendar year with a prize of $25,000. The winner also receives an inclusive ten-day residency at Glen Hollow in Naples, New York, as well as distribution of his or her book to hundreds of Academy of American Poets members.

    In her honor, a prize of $25,000 will be awarded to an outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous calendar year. In addition, the winner will receive an inclusive ten-day residency at Glen Hollow in Naples, New York, as well as distribution of the winning book to hundreds of Academy of American Poets members. To be eligible, applicants must have been a citizen or resident of the U.S. for at least ten years prior to the submission deadline, or have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Legal Permanent Status (LPS), or any category designated by U.S. authorities as conferring similar enhanced status upon non-citizens living in the United States. Eligible entries include any original book of poetry, written in English and published in the United States during 2019, in a standard edition (48 pages or more) by a living poet. Self-published books are not eligible. Translations and new editions of previously published books are not eligible.

    The competition theme is "Blue." Shades, spaces, feelings of blue. Show us what blue means to you. Article submissions are accepted from all writers 18 years and older, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories and other written explorations (up to 900 words). There is one Gold Winner cash award, one writer profile award and at least three publication awards. All work is evaluated based on the vision as relates to the submission theme. Submissions including diverse interpretations of the theme will be considered.
