The mission of the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation is to invest in the future of journalism by building the ethics, skills, and opportunities needed to advance principled, probing news and information. The Foundation provides grants to journalism schools and other nonprofit media organizations, with special preference given to programs focusing on ethics and new media. The Foundation focuses its giving on the following program areas: Investigative Reporting, Professional Development, Oklahoma Journalism, and Special Opportunities. The Embassy of the United States of America in Argentina invites proposal submissions to create a curriculum for English language students of intermediate and advanced ability to study both English and journalism, based on the UNESCO publication Journalism, 'Fake News' and Disinformation: A Handbook for Journalism Education and Training ("Curriculum"). Editorial Projects in Education (EPE), a nonprofit corporation based in Bethesda, Maryland, is best known as the publisher of Education Week. Since its founding in 1981, Education Week has served the nation's pre-K-12 policymakers, educators, researchers, and other influencers with independent and highly respected journalism, research, data, and community. As a leading resource in the field, Education Week engages readers with important education news, meaningful analysis, distinctive explanatory and investigative journalism, and outside opinion and commentary across a range of digital, print, and broadcast platforms, as well as through live and virtual events. As part of its mission, EPE is accepting applications for the inaugural Education Week Gregory M. Chronister Journalism Fellowship, to be awarded annually to an enterprising journalist in support of a reporting project that illuminates a significant issue in pre-K-12 education. The annual fellowship aims to support a recipient who undertakes a significant enterprising or investigative journalism project that promises to inform and educate the field and the public about a timely and important issue for pre-K-12 education. The fellowship, which is intended to be completed while the recipient continues his or her regular employment, provides financial support of up to $10,000.

For this open call, we want to discover ideas that grow immersive storytelling to advance the field of journalism-that inform and encourage news organizations to innovate, experiment and learn. We believe that developing lessons around this emerging area can help journalists extend and deepen their impact. We want projects that use immersive storytelling to fuel innovation and new ideas, while addressing the many open questions facing this nascent industry. We're not prescriptive in what your project should be. We welcome all kinds of ideas, from new ways to produce and apply the technology, to the workflows, roles and skills required to create better journalism and enhanced storytelling techniques, to promoting ethics, transparency and accountability. We encourage collaboration on projects that will help advance the field. Our focus is not on funding content. We are primarily looking for projects that will yield lessons and "how-tos" for the field of journalism and encourage reporters and editors to think differently.

The Lenfest Institute for Journalism is a nonprofit organization devoted to preserving and advancing local journalism nationwide. The institute was founded in 2016 by cable television entrepreneur H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest, who also donated ownership of the Philadelphia Media Network to the institute.

The United States Embassy in Brasília, Brazil, announces a notification of funding opportunity (NOFO) to support a one-week workshop in Brasilia for 25-30 journalism students with up to U$50,000 in FY2018 for a project period not to exceed one year. The preliminary start date for this activity is February 18, 2019, and one award is anticipated as a result of this NOFO. However, should both parties consider the results of this exchange to be positive - and also subject to availability of funds - we may agree to renew this NOFO of up to two additional years. This workshop should provide hands-on training to journalism students on all stages of producing news, via broadcast and digital media.

The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States of America in Islamabad, Pakistan, is pleased to announce an open competition for assistance awards through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). PAS Islamabad invites all eligible organizations (see Section C for Eligibility Requirements) to submit proposals for a Grant or Cooperative Agreement to support activities focused on providing media training and professional development to professionals in the media field through one of the activity areas specified in this NOFO. PAS Islamabad invites proposals for projects that focus on one of the priority areas specified below. Applicants should pay close attention to the Public Affairs Section's goals, priority program areas, target audiences, and geographic locations when developing their proposals. Goals: The goals of this funding opportunity are to: 1. Strengthen People-to-People ties between the United States and Pakistan to increase professional and personal interaction between American media experts and local trainers with Pakistani journalists. 2. Expand Media Engagement by providing training to journalists in new or traditional forms of media that also support professional standards in journalism; increasing participants' knowledge and skills in producing and reporting quality news stories, exposing them to high professional standards, and empowering them to communicate news more effectively to the Pakistani public. Priority Program Areas: This NOFO aims to support the Department of State's initiatives to promote and strengthen the field of journalism and the accuracy of reporting in Pakistan in the areas of: 1. Social media training and digital security 2. Working with police and government 3. Resilience in harsh reporting conditions 4. Covering the 2016 U.S. presidential election

The goal of the $1M Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education is to hack the journalism curriculum using customized versions of the teaching hospital model. The fund supports universities to partner with local news organizations, and explore new ways of providing information to their communities.

To that end, SEJ invites proposals for story grants on climate, conservation, and/or environmental health in North America. Rapid Response grants of up to $2,500 for individuals or $5,000 for team or outlet project will be awarded in support of the development and dissemination of significant new, original, and timely journalism projects focused on climate, conservation, and/or environmental health in North America that otherwise could not be completed. There is a $40 fee to apply, but the fee will be waived for members of SEJ and for members of diversity journalism associations (e.g., National Association of Hispanic Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, Native American Journalists Association, Asian American Journalists Association, South Asian Journalists Association, Association of LGBTQ Journalists). Eligible applicants include journalists, professors, or students who are not employed or contracted to do any public relations work on environmental issues. Those whose paid work involves lobbying, media relations, or public relations on environment-related issues are not eligible.

The U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City Public Affairs Section (PAS) is pleased to announce funding is available through the Public Diplomacy Federal Assistance Awards program to run the Journalism Club at the American Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

To support investigative journalism on the topic of corruption, corruption proceeds, and illicit financial transactions (i.e. money laundering) of such proceeds, the U.S. Department of State has allocated $500,000 in FY 2017 International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement (INCLE) funds to this grant opportunity. Foreign assistance will support work in at least two of four target countries in the region (Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Peru) to support investigative capacity building and awareness-raising between journalists and law enforcement, where possible. These countries may serve as a pilot for future programming.

As a part of the Google News Initiative's $300M commitment to help journalism thrive in the digital age, we've launched GNI Innovation Challenges to support projects that drive digital innovation and develop new business models. The GNI will fund a set of projects from around the world that meet specified criteria, with the intent of producing learnings and thought leadership that can be shared with the wider industry.

The American Journalism Historians Association seeks applications for its annual Research Grant Awards. The deadline is May 15, 2013. Up to four winners will be announced at the Sept. 26-28 convention in New Orleans. The Research Grant Award is designed to provide research assistance and to recognize and reward the winners. Up to four grants per year for up to $1,250 each will be awarded upon review and recommendation of the Research Grant Committee. All current AJHA full members with a minimum of three years' membership at the time of application are eligible. The research project must be related to mass media history.

The competition theme is "Blue." Shades, spaces, feelings of blue. Show us what blue means to you. Article submissions are accepted from all writers 18 years and older, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories and other written explorations (up to 900 words). There is one Gold Winner cash award, one writer profile award and at least three publication awards. All work is evaluated based on the vision as relates to the submission theme. Submissions including diverse interpretations of the theme will be considered. To that end, the organization is accepting applications for the PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship, which seeks to harness the power of writers and writing in being witness to the societal consequences of mass incarceration by capturing and sharing the stories of incarcerated individuals, their families, communities, and the wider impact of the criminal justice system. Proposed projects may include but are not limited to fictional stories, works of literary or long-form journalism, theatrical scripts, memoirs, poetry collections, or multimedia projects. The proposed project should engage issues of reform, fuel public debate, crystallize concepts of reform, and facilitate the possibility of societal change.

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award allows you to spend five years building up a working group and working on a high-profile, innovative research project of your own choice at a research institution of your own choice in Germany.

The Social Science Research Council and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership have announced that applications are now open for the Abe Fellowship for Journalists. The fellowship is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects. Applicants are invited to submit proposals on one of four themes. 1) Threats to Personal, Societal, and International Security: Topics may include food, water, and energy insecurity; pandemics; climate change; disaster preparedness, prevention, and recovery; and conflict, terrorism, and cyber security. 2) Growth and Sustainable Development: Topics may include global financial stability, trade imbalances and agreements, adjustment to globalization, climate change and adaptation, and poverty and inequality. 3) Social, Scientific, and Cultural Trends and Transformations: Topics may include aging and other demographic change, the benefits and dangers of reproductive genetics, gender and social exclusion, expansion of STEM education among women and underrepresented populations, migration, rural depopulation and urbanization, impacts of automation on jobs, poverty and inequality, and community resilience. 4) Governance, Empowerment, and Participation: Topics may include challenges to democratic institutions, participatory governance, human rights, the changing role of NGO/NPOs, the rise of new media, and government roles in fostering innovation.

At a time of scarce media resources, the coronavirus story challenges newsrooms to find creative ways to bring accurate, compelling, and timely information to their readers. To that end, the center seeks strong proposals that involve a strategic and concerted effort by multiple journalists and/or newsrooms to pursue a reporting project together, leveraging resources, expertise, and publication platforms. In addition to a strong collaboration component for reporting and publication, the center encourages proposals that are focused on systemic, underreported issues underlying the coronavirus crisis; use data-driven and/or interdisciplinary approaches to reporting on coronavirus; and hold the powerful accountable.

Through the fund, NGS will distribute grants ranging between $1,000 and $8,000 USD to support the local coverage of the preparation, response, and impact of the coronavirus pandemic as seen through evidence-based reporting. Through the fund, NGS will place particular emphasis on efforts to deliver news to underserved populations, particularly where there is a dearth of evidence-based information getting to those who need it. Both individual stories and longer series will be supported, as well as local and even hyper-local distribution models. Beyond reporting on medical and physical health related to COVID-19, NGS especially encourages reporting that covers social, emotional, economic, and equity issues. Narratives around the pandemic necessarily include facts and numbers but also must go deeper - telling the stories of inequities that COVID-19 has brought to light. Priority communities include those at high risk or hit especially hard by the virus, Indigenous communities; immigrant or refugee communities; underserved, urban, rural, or elderly populations; and children.
