FY2020 English Language Teacher Training Project - 0 views

    Promoting and improving English language education in Japan will increase U.S.-Japan exchange, a top priority of the Embassy of the United States. A 2012 report by the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON) noted that inadequate English language proficiency among Japanese young people can discourage students from applying and may decrease their chances of admission to programs abroad. The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is working to strengthen English language education from kindergarten through university. The U.S. Embassy supports MEXT's goal of strengthening English language education by providing Japanese teachers of English with various Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) training programs to improve their English teaching, with the ultimate goal of promoting more student exchange between the United States and Japan.

    The English Speaking Union of the United States each year sponsors a travel grant for study or research providing a stipend of up to $2,000. This competition is open to qualified under-graduate and post-graduate students, faculty, and others involved in academic pursuits that are in accord with the goal of the English Speaking Union of promoting education and understanding among the English speaking peoples of the world. The grant is designed to assist worthy individuals who are active in the fields of Business, the Humanities, Science and Engineering, Liberal, Fine or Applied Arts and who wish to study or conduct research either in the United States or in one of the countries of the British Commonwealth.

Professional English Language Training for journalists in Kazakhstan - 0 views

    The U.S. Embassy to Kazakhstan plans to provide the opportunity for broadcast, print, and online journalists from at least six cities of Kazakhstan to gain skills in English language required for their professional needs. We envision holding classes in Astana, Almaty, Aktau, Karaganda, Kostanay and Shymkent, although prospective grantees may propose alternate or additional cities in their proposals. As an additional benefit, we expect the courses will help journalists in each participating city to establish good working relationships with each other and expand professional networks that they can use to share information and skills.

    Founded in 1922, PEN America champions the freedom to write, recognizes the power of the word to transform the world, and works to unite writers and their allies to celebrate creative expression and defend the liberties that make it possible. The organization currently is accepting applications for the PEN/Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History. Through the program, a grant of $10,000 will be awarded to advance or complete an ongoing literary work of nonfiction that uses oral history to illuminate an event, individual, place, or movement. To be eligible, projects must be an unpublished work-in-progress and be the work of a single individual written in English.     In her honor, a prize of $25,000 will be awarded to an outstanding book of poetry published in the United States in the previous calendar year. In addition, the winner will receive an inclusive ten-day residency at Glen Hollow in Naples, New York, as well as distribution of the winning book to hundreds of Academy of American Poets members. To be eligible, applicants must have been a citizen or resident of the U.S. for at least ten years prior to the submission deadline, or have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Legal Permanent Status (LPS), or any category designated by U.S. authorities as conferring similar enhanced status upon non-citizens living in the United States. Eligible entries include any original book of poetry, written in English and published in the United States during 2019, in a standard edition (48 pages or more) by a living poet. Self-published books are not eligible. Translations and new editions of previously published books are not eligible.

    The Conference on College Composition and Communication is inviting proposals for its Research Initiative, which is designed to advance the organization's mission to advocate for broad and evolving definitions of literacy, communication, rhetoric, and writing (including multi-modal discourse, digital communication, and diverse language practices) and empower individuals and communities through bold, creative research. Through the program, grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded in support of proposals designed to investigate key challenges faced by literacy, communication, rhetoric and writing instructors and administrators in their classrooms and programs. Proposals should directly address the impact that the research might have on disciplinary and public discourse about these topics and  convey results in at least two final products: one that is addressed to a scholarly audience of researchers and teachers in the field, and one for a clearly specified audience beyond those in the field.
