Malawi faces chronic shortages, skill mix imbalances, and uneven geographical distribution of professionally qualified health workers such as medical doctors, clinical officers, nurse midwives, and allied health professionals. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide technical assistance (TA) to the Government of Malawi in support of the national HIV response through the secondment of technical assistance (Technical assistants recruited and posted to requesting institutions to continue support to the HIV program (TA positions for Care and Treatment, Logistics and Supply Chain, Monitoring and Evaluation)) to the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other organizations, implementation of a fellowship program to develop technical and leadership capacity for HIV program management, provision of technical assistance to regulatory bodies (Medical Council of Malawi, Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi and Pharmacy Medicines and Poisons Board), and improvement of the quality of in-service and pre-service education for critical health worker cadres in collaboration with Ministry of Health and training institutions under the University of Malawi and the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM). Key outcomes of this program include the development and dissemination of technical guidelines, teaching materials, and tools for curricula strengthening. Teaching sites will be appropriately equipped and staffed. Capacity gaps in national programs will be addressed through the recruitment and deployment of technical assistants & fellows. In addition, the roles of regulatory bodies in education will be strengthened through the provision of technical assistance

This award is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in or have recently completed (within the past calendar year) formal education in science or medical journalism; formal education in general journalism and can adequately demonstrate the intent to primarily cover science or medicine; or formal education in a scientific or medical field and can adequately demonstrate the intent to primarily cover science or medicine.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers undergraduates the chance to explore clinical and basic science research in laboratories in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The primary goal is to provide students with a foundation for making career choices in the biomedical sciences. Students have the opportunity to work with one of more than 700 faculty members at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, many of whom have active research programs that cover all areas of pediatric medicine, including the study of developmental biology, congenital disorders, genetic diseases, cancer, cardiology, neurology and immunology.

The Autism Science Foundation is inviting applications for its Pre- and Postdoctoral Training Awards and Medical School Gap Year Research Training Awards from graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing careers in basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders. The proposed training must be scientifically linked to autism and may be broadened to include training in a closely related area of scientific research, including but not limited to human behavior across the lifespan (language, learning, behavior, communication, social function, motor skills and planning, epilepsy, sleep, repetitive disorders); neurobiology (anatomy, development, neuroimaging); pharmacology; neuropathology; genetics; epigenetics; genomics; epigenomics; immunology; molecular and cellular mechanisms; studies employing model organisms and systems; and studies of treatment and service delivery.

In addition, the first place institution will get to display the BMEidea trophy in their winning department for the year.

The Medical Research Fellows Program enables students to be immersed in a high-impact, intensive research experience at a critical time in their professional education, before they make plans for residency or postdoctoral training. Unique aspects of the program include national and regional professional development activities, mentorship by physician-scientists, interaction with HHMI investigators, and integration into a community of like-minded peers. Each student selects and works with a mentor to develop a basic, translational, or applied biomedical research proposal. Both mentor selection and the research proposal are key components of the fellowship application; working with an HHMI scientist is encouraged but not required. Mentors can be at any academic or nonprofit research institution in the United States (excluding the National Institutes of Health and any other government agency) or at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA. 

On a biennial basis (every odd year) the SMA Dissertation Award is given to the author of a dissertation which is judged to be a significant and potentially influential contribution to medical anthropology. Dissertations are judged on the basis of: (1) scope and excellence of scholarship, including ethnographic research; (2) originality of subject matter; (3) effectiveness and persuasiveness of arguments; and (4) writing quality.

The Alcohol, Drug, and Tobacco Study Group (ADTSG) of the Society for Medical Anthropology requests submissions for the best graduate student paper in the anthropology of alcohol, drugs, pharmaceuticals, tobacco or similar substances.

The Council on Anthropology and Reproduction (CAR), an interest group of the Society for Medical Anthropology, is pleased to announce its 13th annual award competition for the best graduate student paper on anthropology and reproduction. Submissions from all anthropological subdisciplines are encouraged.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi is continuing its Summer Undergraduate Research Experience for undergraduates who will begin their senior year in the fall of each academic year. This program is designed to allow undergraduate students from other universities with little or no research experience to conduct graduate-level research on the USM campus in Hattiesburg under the direction of a faculty member in the Department during the summer of your current academic year. Fellowship recipients will receive a $4,500 stipend for the 10 week summer session and paid on-campus lodging. Supplemental travel funds are available for those traveling long distances. The program is intended for students with an interest in chemistry or biochemistry as a career. Students interested primarily in medical, pharmacy, dental or other pre-professional schools are encouraged to look to those schools for summer opportunities.

Calling all postdoctoral trainees, graduate students, and junior faculty from geriatric programs, aging institutes, and medical schools: submit your late breaker abstract for the opportunity for a travel award funded by NIA. GSA will select up to 10 travel awards, each in the amount of $900 and complimentary registration to attend and participate in the workshop for faculty and research fellows will be made to help defray the cost of attending GSA's Annual Scientific Meeting.  All attendees are expected to stay and participate in the entire workshop. The Postdoctoral Fellowship Award supports exceptionally talented recent doctoral or medical graduates in pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral training and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Those individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have demonstrated that they are the "best and brightest" of their peers. Applicants for this award must exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research. Under this award mechanism, the postdoctoral fellow is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) and, as such, should write the project narrative, training plan, and other application components with appropriate guidance from the mentor. While the PI is not required to have previous experience in breast cancer research, the proposed project and training must focus on breast cancer. Applications must emphasize the PI's high potential for success in becoming an independent breast cancer researcher based on his/her qualifications, achievements (including first-author publications), and letters of recommendation. The mentor (or co-mentor, if applicable) must possess the appropriate expertise and experience in breast cancer, to include publications and active peer reviewed breast cancer funding, and clearly demonstrate a commitment to guiding the PI's research and training. If the mentor is not an experienced breast cancer researcher, then formal co-mentorship by an established breast cancer researcher is required. The application must include information about the mentor's experience in conducting innovative research and how he/she intends to support the PI's endeavors in breast cancer. 

This two-day conference focuses on translational aspects of addiction research among chemists, biologists, and behavioral scientists. The diversity of participants and attendees at this meeting (undergraduate students to senior faculty, chemists to psychiatrists) provides a unique venue for cross-fertilization among different disciplines and in so doing promotes new and innovative approaches to medications development in addictions biology. The meeting provides a stimulating environment for young scientists who are strongly encouraged to present their work and interact with senior scientists.

To that end, the foundation is inviting applications from mainland China for its Fellowship Award in Translational Research. The aim of the program is to build enduring partnership between the U.S. and Asia through the training of future Chinese academics and to encourage long-term collaborations between the two regions. The annual award provides  a one-year fellowship to a qualified candidate to conduct  research  in the area of translational medicine. The program will provide support in the amount of $60,000 for the project to be conducted at the applicant's home institution in China, as well as support for the U.S. partner institution in the amount of $25,000.

The Urso Summer Student Program in PSP Research will support students conducting summer research projects focused on progressive supranuclear palsy. This program seeks to encourage students at all post-secondary levels to pursue research in this field in the hope of making PSP a long-term area of research interest. Projects may be in basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological aspects of PSP. Undergraduate, graduate and medical students are eligible - residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral fellows are not. The research must be performed under the supervision of a faculty mentor with expertise in the field. The maximum award is $3,000. Funds may be budgeted to cover the applicant's stipend and research related expenses. Awardees will present the results of their research at the Annual CurePSP Research Symposium in the Fall (typically mid-November) following their summer project. CurePSP will provide awardees travel and lodging expenses for the Symposium.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) announces the availability of funds for Administrative Supplements to NIGMS-funded predoctoral T32 training grants. These funds are designed to provide support for the development and implementation of curricular activities aimed at a) providing graduate students with a strong foundation in research design and methods in areas related to conducting reproducible and rigorous research and b) broadening training to better prepare students for research careers in a variety of venues, such as industry, government, or entrepreneurial enterprises.

The Lung Cancer Research Foundation supports research on innovative strategies for better treatments, screening, and prevention of all cancers of the lung. The foundation's goal is to fund promising scientific and clinical research initiatives that lead to more positive outcomes and improved quality of life for all lung cancer patients.   To that end, LCRF has issued a Request for Proposals designed to provide critical seed support for cutting-edge scientific research on all lung cancers. Through its Research Grant program, the foundation will support projects with a focus on basic science, translational research, clinical research, supportive care, and quality of care/outcomes.   Grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded.   The program is open to all U.S. and international investigators, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, physicians, medical students, and nurse researchers.

SSHM invites submissions to its 2014 SSHM Undergraduate Prize Competition. Up to 6 prizes will be awarded for the best unpublished original research essays in the social history of medicine. We will consider two groups of undergraduate students: humanities and social science students, and medical, healthcare and allied science students.

This $18,000 fellowship offers support to medical-dental students who have substantial interests in research and teaching careers in pharmacology/clinical pharmacology and who are willing to work ful time in a specific research effort.
