    The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The over-arching goal of this NIDDK R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce.  This R25 program encourages Professional Societies to design and implement educational programs with the goal of recruiting of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences workforce. Applications from Professional Societies supporting the NIDDK mission areas are encouraged to develop educational programs aimed at recruiting talented , fellows, and junior faculty from groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences research in the NIDDK mission areas. Professional Societies should propose an educational program based upon an educational experiment which includes a diversity management plan for the Society which should enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce, and the pool of individuals from under represented groups in the organization's programs and leadership.

    The purpose of the Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) Program is to develop a diverse pool of well-trained scientists available to address the nation's biomedical research agenda. The program requires effective partnerships between a research-intensive institution and a teaching-intensive partner institution that has a historical mission or a demonstrated commitment to educating students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce. The IRACDA program provides support for a mentored postdoctoral research training experience at the research-intensive institution and funding for the IRACDA scholars to develop critical teaching and mentoring skills at a partner institution. The primary goals of the IRACDA program are to develop a diverse pool of well-trained biomedical scientists who have the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue independent academic careers and to enhance science educational offerings at partner institutions.     This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites an application from the Program Directors/Principal Investigators of the Coordination and Evaluation Center (CEC), which is currently supporting the research being performed for the Enhancing the Diversity of the NIH-Funded Workforce Program. This program, known as the Diversity Program Consortium (DPC), consists of three integrated initiatives: Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD), the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and the CEC. The CEC will continue to organize the activities required for the attainment of program-wide goals and to measure the agreed upon hallmarks of success at the student, faculty, and institutional level. The CEC will employ and refine the processes developed in the previous funding period to assess the impact of BUILD and NRMN activities on attainment of the hallmarks. The CEC will coordinate the collection of data from the DPC, assess the data in an ongoing way, provide feedback, and facilitate an iterative process of program adjustment to maximize the research of BUILD and NRMN. The CEC should also focus on the dissemination of effective strategies for enhancing the diversity of the biomedical research workforce and for transitioning into a sustainable model for evaluating diversity enhancing programs beyond the funding cycle.

This research includes preclinical, clinical and behavioral studies with the specific purpose to provide Administrative Supplements to active NIH parent grants for one year to address health disparities among women of populations in the US who are understudied, underrepresented and underreported in biomedical research. The proposed research must address an area specified within Objective 3.9 (Goal 3.0) of the NIH Strategic Plan for Research on Womens Health which states: Examine health disparities among women stemming from differences in such factors as race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, and urban-rural living, as they influence health, health behaviors, and access to screening and therapeutic interventions. Projects must include a focus on one or more NIH-designated health disparities populations, which include Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, underserved rural populations, and sexual and gender minorities (SGM).     The NINDS, with other NIH Institutes and Centers participating in the BRAIN Initiative, intends to publish "BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00)." The program is designed to increase biomedical research workforce diversity and foster a strong cohort of new, highly skilled and well trained, NIH-supported, independent investigators from underrepresented groups working in research areas supported by the BRAIN Initiative, as highlighted in BRAIN 2025: A Scientific Vision. It is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful mentoring teams and responsive projects. The FOA is expected to be published in April 2018 with an expected application due date in June 2018. This FOA will utilize the K99/R00 funding activity. Details of the planned FOA are provided below. Research Initiative Details The BRAIN Initiative K99/R00 award is intended for women and members of underrepresented groups who are working in research areas supported by the BRAIN Initiative, who have no more than five years of postdoctoral research experience, and who require at least 12 months of mentored research training and career development (K99 phase) before transitioning to the independent research (R00) phase of the program.
