FY2020 Research Opportunities in High Energy Physics - 0 views

    The DOE SC program in High Energy Physics (HEP) hereby invites new and renewal grant applications for support of research programs in high energy physics. The mission of the HEP program is to understand how the universe works at its most fundamental level, which is done by discovering the elementary constituents of matter and energy, probing the interactions between them, and exploring the basic nature of space and time. The scientific objectives and priorities for the field recommended by the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) are detailed in its recent long-range strategic Particle Physics Project Prioritization Plan (P5), available at: https://science.osti.gov/~/media/hep/hepap/pdf/May-2014/FINAL_P5_Report_Interactive_060214.pdf. The HEP program focuses on three (3) experimental scientific frontiers: The Energy Frontier - where powerful accelerators are used to create new particles, reveal their interactions, and investigate fundamental forces; The Intensity Frontier - where intense particle beams and highly sensitive detectors are used to pursue alternate pathways to investigate fundamental forces and particle interactions by studying events that occur rarely in nature, and to provide precision measurements of these phenomena; and The Cosmic Frontier - where non-accelerator-based experiments observe the cosmos and detect cosmic particles, making measurements of natural phenomena that can provide information about the nature of dark matter, dark energy, and other fundamental properties of the universe that impact our understanding of matter and energy.

    The High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Program seeks qualified industry partners to participate in short-term, collaborative projects with the Department of Energy's (DOE's) national laboratories. Through support from the Advanced Manufacturing Office of the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), selected industry partners will be granted access to High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities and experienced staff at DOE National Laboratories. Collaborative Fusion Energy Research in the DIII-D National Program - 0 views

The mission of the DIII-D program is to establish the scientific basis for the optimization of the tokamak approach to fusion energy production. The primary means to accomplish this mission is research utilizing the DIII-D tokamak to develop the ultimate potential of the tokamak concept as a magnetic confinement system. The DIII-D program also involves foundational fusion energy science research to make progress on a broad front toward predictive understanding of fusion plasmas. The major strengths of the program are the highly flexible and well-diagnosed DIII-D tokamak and a large collaborative research team from the national and international fusion community. All applications will utilize the DIII-D National Fusion Facility at General Atomics in San Diego, California.

    Particle physics plays an essential role in the broader enterprise of the physical sciences. It inspires U.S. students, attracts talent from around the world, and drives critical intellectual and technological advances in other fields. And the field is entering an era of unprecedented potential as a result of new discoveries about matter and energy in the Universe. The Particle Physics program seeks to explore the fundamental nature of matter, energy, space, and time. It asks such questions as: What are the origins of mass? Can the basic forces of nature be unified? How did the universe begin? How will it evolve in the future? What are dark matter and dark energy? Are there extra dimensions of space-time? Formerly separate questions in cosmology (the universe on the largest scales) and quantum phenomena (the universe on the smallest scales) become connected through our understanding that the early universe can be explored through the techniques of particle physics.At the NSF, particle physics is supported by four programs within the Division of Physics: (1) the Theory program, which includes fundamental research on the forces of nature and the early history of the universe as well as support for the experimental program by providing guidance and analysis for high energy experiments; (2) the Elementary Particle Physics (EPP) program, which supports particle physics at accelerators; (3) the Particle Astrophysics (PA) program, which supports non-accelerator experiments; and (4) the new Accelerator Science program which supports research at universities into the educational and discovery potential of basic accelerator physics.
