This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites research projects that seek to explain the underlying mechanisms, processes, and trajectories of social relationships and how these factors affect outcomes in human health, illness, recovery, and overall wellbeing. Types of projects submitted under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical and/or behavioral outcomes in humans to understand fundamental aspects of phenomena related to social connectedness and isolatedness. NIH considers such studies as "prospective basic science studies involving human participants" that meet the NIH definition of basic research and fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trials (see, e.g., NOT-OD-19-024) Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind.

We are looking for ideas that can lead to new multi-grant research portfolios on human flourishing. We are particularly interested in ideas for interdisciplinary scientific research towards discoveries that can promote physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. We welcome ideas that bridge gaps between empirical science and the humanities. Such ideas may include (but are not limited to):  Experimental testing of philosophically grounded models of human flourishing; Research on biological complexity in humans, including genetics, epigenetics, and microbiome research; Investigation of key psychological, neuroscientific, or human developmental concepts, such as (but not limited to) altruism, creativity, imagination, narrative, and meta-cognition; Research on cognitive, affective, or social capacities of individuals or groups; Studies of human biological or cultural evolution.

The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that address the needs of Syrians survivors of torture and other gross human rights violations (GHRV), including released political prisoners and their families. Projects should focus on the mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), medical, legal, and human rights documentation sectors, with specific attention focused on issues faced by recently released political prisoners and other Syrian survivors of gross human rights violations.

The vision of the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) is for the human-animal bond to be universally embraced as an essential element of human wellness. To that end, HABRI works to establish the vital role of companion animals in the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. HABRI has issued a Request for Proposals for projects that investigate the health outcomes of pet ownership and/or animal-assisted activity or therapy, both for the people and the animals involved. The organization is interested in projects that involve a variety of companion animals (e.g., small animals, dogs, cats, fish, and horses). Proposals should have a strong theoretical framework and focus on innovative approaches to the study of the health effects of companion animals on humans within the following broad categories: child health and development; healthy aging; and mental health and wellness.

To advance this mission, the foundation invites proposals from nonprofit organizations for its 2017 Innovative Research grants program. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded for research that investigates the therapeutic effects of horses on humans. The purpose of program is to foster research focused on new ideas that have strong potential to bridge gaps in our understanding of horse-human interactions. The American Psychological Foundation's Henry David Fund was established to support young psychologists with a demonstrated interest in the behavioral aspects of human reproductive behavior or an area related to population concerns. The fund sponsors two grants annually:  The Research Grant provides up to $1,500 for support of ongoing research in behavioral aspects of population studies or human reproductive behavior.  The Travel Grant provides up to $1,500 to support travel related to research on human reproductive behavior and population studies or attendance at an international or regional congress.

NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) has released solicited research response area NRA 80JSC019N0001-HFBP "Topics in Human Factors and Behavioral Performance" that solicits applied research in support of HRP goals and objectives. This response area is Appendix E of the Human Exploration Research Opportunities (HERO) NRA (80JSC019N0001). Proposals are solicited by NASA in the area of Identification, Development and Validation of a Mars Adaptive TRaining-Integrative Knowledge System (MATRIKS) for Pre- and In-Flight Crew Training for Long-Duration Missions. This is a Virtual NASA Specialized Center of Research (VNSCOR) topic.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research to develop task-based behavioral measures that are shown to engage brain systems relevant to anhedonia using neuroimaging or other brain measures with similar spatial resolution. The goal is to identify behavioral tasks that can be used as quantitative tools in future studies of the functional constructs associated with anhedonia and in treatment development. This FOA is for basic science experimental studies involving human participants that fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of brain function in healthy individuals or those with disorders.

The Linguistics Program supports basic science in the domain of human language, encompassing investigations of the grammatical properties of individual human languages, and of natural language in general. Research areas include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, and phonology. The program encourages projects that are interdisciplinary in methodological or theoretical perspective, and that address questions that cross disciplinary boundaries, such as (but not limited to): What are the psychological processes involved in the production, perception, and comprehension of language? What are the computational properties of language and/or the language processor that make fluent production, incremental comprehension or rapid learning possible? How do the acoustic and physiological properties of speech inform our theories of language and/or language processing? What role does human neurobiology play in shaping the various components of our linguistic capacities? How does language develop in children? What social and cultural factors underlie language variation and change?

The goal of the Environmental Sustainability program is to promote sustainable engineered systems that support human well-being and that are also compatible with sustaining natural (environmental) systems.  These systems provide ecological services vital for human survival.  Research efforts supported by the program typically consider long time horizons and may incorporate contributions from the social sciences and ethics. The program supports engineering research that seeks to balance society's need to provide ecological protection and maintain stable economic conditions.

We are interested in proposals that address memory or cognition under normal and pathological conditions. This includes proposals that address mechanisms of memory or cognition at the synaptic, cellular, or behavioral level in animals, including humans.We are particularly interested in proposals that incorporate fundamentally new approaches, as well as those that involve human experimentation. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are encouraged. Projects restricted to the creation of conventional mouse knockouts in candidate disease genes identified by association studies, or to broadly overexpress those genes, are discouraged. In addition, projects to perform genetic interaction screens on disease genes in model organisms (yeast, worm, fly, fish) will not be considered, unless the project includes substantive specific aims that investigate the disease relevance of any new genes so discovered in human or mammalian model systems.

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces a Request for Statements of Interest (RSOI) from civil society organizations to promote and protect the human rights of marginalized populations. This request is seeking programs that take an intersectional approach to addressing violence and discrimination targeting marginalized populations, which undermine societys collective security, and programs that provide marginalized populations with tools to prevent, mitigate and recover from violence.

As defined in the DD Act of 2000, the term "developmental disabilities" means a severe, chronic disability of an individual that is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or combination of mental and physical impairments that are manifested before the individual attains age 22 and are likely to continue indefinitely. Developmental disabilities result in substantial limitations in three or more of the following functional areas: self-care, receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living and economic self-sufficiency. The DD Act of 2000 identifies a number of significant findings, including: Disability is a natural part of the human experience that does not diminish the right of individuals with developmental disabilities to enjoy the opportunity for independence, productivity, integration and inclusion into the community. Individuals whose disabilities occur during their developmental period frequently have severe disabilities that are likely to continue indefinitely. Individuals with developmental disabilities often require lifelong specialized services and assistance, provided in a coordinated and culturally competent manner by many agencies, professionals, advocates, community representatives and others to eliminate barriers and to meet the needs of such individuals and their families. The DD Act of 2000 also promotes the best practices and policies presented below: Individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with the most severe developmental disabilities, are capable of achieving independence, productivity, integration and inclusion into the community, and often require the provision of services, supports and other assistance to achieve such. Individuals with developmental disabilities have competencies, capabilities and personal goals that should be recognized, supported and encouraged, and any assistance to such individuals should be provided in an individualized manner, consisten
