One Mind is inviting applications for its Rising Star Research Awards program, which seeks to fund early-career investigators who have demonstrated productivity and innovation in a scientific field that can be applied to the study of neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety, addiction, bipolar disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, suicidality, and other serious psychiatric illnesses. To that end, grants of $300,000 over three years will be awarded in support of research proposals on any of a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions. Studies focusing on bipolar disorder are of special interest, including applications that would advance therapeutics ranging from biomarkers to promising therapeutic modalities (e.g., neurostimulation). Examples of relevant research include those with potential to identify new biological mechanisms and therapeutic targets; develop new or refine existing models and research tools; identify or validate biomarkers; evaluate the effectiveness of therapies, including pharmaceuticals, electroceuticals, digital therapies, or cognitive and behavioral health interventions to prevent the onset of or promote recovery from neuropsychiatric disorders; characterize similarities and differences between two or more neuropsychiatric or neurotraumatic disorders to advance personalized medicine; improve understanding of how comorbid conditions such as cancer and diabetes, as well as other neurological and non-neurological disorders, interact with neuropsychiatric disorders and impact diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments; promote or restore brain health by conducting bi-directional and/or iterative translational research using existing clinical data or new data from small pilot clinical studies in combination with relevant preclinical or computational models; or advance digital health, telehealth, or other innovative approaches to increasing access to mental health care.

The purpose of this initiative is to: accelerate innovative drug and device discovery; develop pharmacologic and neuromodulatory tools for basic and clinical research on mental disorders, substance use disorders (SUDs) or alcohol addiction; develop and validate tools (pharmacologic or neurostimulation) in support of experimental therapeutic studies of innovative new candidates for mental disorders; and support early stage human studies to rapidly assess the safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamics of promising drug candidates/devices and new indications for novel Investigational New Drug (IND)-ready agents or Pre-Market Approval (PMA)-ready devices for the treatment of mental disorders, SUDs or alcohol addiction. This FOA encourages applications to advance the discovery, preclinical development, and proof of concept (PoC) testing of new, rationally based candidate agents and neurostimulation approaches to treat mental disorders or SUDs or alcohol addiction, and to develop novel ligands and circuit-engagement devices as tools to further characterize existing or to validate new drug/device targets. Partnerships between academia and industry are strongly encouraged.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the efficient pilot testing of novel psychosocial therapeutic and preventive interventions for mental disorders in adults and children, using an experimental therapeutics approach. Under this FOA, trials must be designed so that results, whether positive or negative, will provide information of high scientific utility and will support go/no-go decisions about further development or testing of the intervention. This FOA supports the development and testing of innovative psychosocial intervention approaches where the target and/or the intervention strategy are novel. Targets might include, but are not limited to, potentially modifiable behavioral, cognitive, affective and/or interpersonal factors or processes, neural circuits or neural activity subserving specific behaviors or cognitive processes, and/or other neurobiological mechanisms associated with risk for, causation of, or maintenance of a mental disorder. Eligible psychosocial intervention strategies might include in-person or technology-assisted delivery, provided the target and/or the intervention strategy is novel. This FOA supports the development and testing of novel psychosocial interventions, as defined above, as monotherapies or as augmentations to standard treatment. Support will be provided for up to 3 years for studies to replicate previous target engagement findings, and relate change in the intervention target/mechanism to clinical benefit. Ultimately, this FOA is intended to speed the translation of emerging basic science findings of mechanisms and processes underlying mental disorders into novel interventions that can be efficiently tested for their promise in restoring function and reducing symptoms for those living with mental disorders, or for preventing mental disorders among those at risk.

The first recipients of center grants-the University of Minnesota, The University of Chicago and Yale University-have made exceptional strides in advancing research on disordered gambling behavior. Established in 2009, the Hilda and Preston Davis Foundation was created to "...to advance the development of all areas of the lives of children and young adults…with special emphasis…on those suffering from eating disorders." The primary goal of The Hilda and Preston Davis Foundation Awards Program for Eating Disorders Research is to support innovative, clinically relevant research that seeks to understand the underlying biology of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, leading to improved patient care. To meet this goal, the Program provides vital support to Junior Faculty Investigators and Senior Postdoctoral Fellows working in non-profit academic, medical and research institutions in the United States to build a strong workforce dedicated to the etiology of eating disorders, its associated pathologies, and to drive therapeutic and treatment development. The International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) recognizes the vital role of developing the next generation of leaders in the field of bipolar disorders and will offer 4 awards for original research publication submissions. In order to promote research interest in bipolar disorders in developing countries, two of the awards will be reserved for those from low and middle-income countries, as defined by the 2013 World Bank Classification. The awards will be presented in conjunction with the 16th Annual Conference of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders) to be held in Seoul, South Korea from 18-21 March 2014. Eligibility: These awards are open to psychiatric trainees, postgraduate students, and junior faculty up to and including the Assistant Professor rank from around the world, independent of age, nationality, sex, or race. Winners from previous years are not eligible to apply.

AFSP is committed to funding innovative research in all areas related to suicide. In an effort to stimulate research in understudied areas, we select priority areas for funding. Our two-year priority period allows for resubmission of unsuccessful applications in the second year. Priority area research applications are reviewed along with the general pool of grant applications, with priority given to strong grants in the designated areas. We aim to fund at least one to two rigorously designed priority area grants among those awarded in each cycle. While we encourage applications in our priority areas, we also encourage and welcome all applications related to preventing suicide. Our AFSP Suicide Research Grants Program Priority Areas for 2013-14 are Anxiety Disorders or Alcohol and Other Substance Use Disorders. These disorders may be studied alone or in combination with other disorders.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) are accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2015 Cooperative Agreements to Benefit Homeless Individuals for States (CABHI-States) grants. The purpose of this jointly funded program is to enhance or develop the infrastructure of states and their treatment service systems to increase capacity and provide accessible, effective, comprehensive, coordinated/integrated, and evidence-based treatment services; permanent supportive housing; peer supports; and other recovery support services to: * Individuals who experience chronic homelessness and have substance use disorders, serious mental illnesses (SMI), or co-occurring mental and substance use disorders; and/or * Veterans who experience homelessness/chronic homelessness and have substance use disorders, SMI, or co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. As a result of this program, SAMHSA seeks to: 1) improve statewide strategies to address planning, coordination, and integration of behavioral health and primary care services, and permanent housing to reduce homelessness; 2) increase the number of individuals, residing in permanent housing, who receive behavioral health treatment and recovery support services; and 3) increase the number of individuals placed in permanent housing and enrolled in Medicaid and other mainstream benefits (e.g., Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance [SSI/SSDI], Temporary Assistance for Needy Families [TANF], Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP]).

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Mental Health Awareness Training grants (Short Title: MHAT). The purpose of this program is to: (1) train individuals (e.g., school personnel, emergency first responders, law enforcement, veterans, armed services members and their families) to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, particularly serious mental illness (SMI) and/or serious emotional disturbance (SED); (2) establish linkages with school- and/or community-based mental health agencies to refer individuals with the signs or symptoms of mental illness to appropriate services; (3) train emergency services personnel, veterans, law enforcement, fire department personnel, and others to identify persons with a mental disorder and employ crisis de-escalation techniques; and (4) educate individuals about resources that are available in the community for individuals with a mental disorder. It is expected that this program will prepare and train others on how to appropriately and safely respond to individuals with mental disorders, particularly individuals with SMI and/or SED.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Cooperative Agreements (Short Title: MHTTC). The purpose of this program is to establish one MHTTC National Coordinating Center, ten (10) MHTTC Regional Centers, one MHTTC Tribal Affairs Center, and one MHTTC Hispanic and Latino Center to develop and maintain a collaborative network to support resource development and dissemination, training and technical assistance, and workforce development to the field and CMHS grant recipients. It is expected that MHTTC Cooperative Agreements will coordinate and manage CMHS's national efforts to ensure that high-quality, effective mental health disorder treatment and recovery support services, and evidence-based practices are available for all individuals with mental disorders including, in particular, those with serious mental illness. Years of research and knowledge of evidence-based practices related to mental disorders show that well-designed prevention, treatment, and recovery support efforts are effective and can have multiple benefits for individuals with mental health disorders, including serious mental illness. It is SAMHSA's intent to ensure that the public has the resources it needs to be successful in treating these conditions. The MHTTCs will work with organizations and treatment practitioners involved in the delivery of mental health services to strengthen their capacity to deliver effective, evidence-based practices to individuals, including the full continuum of services spanning mental illness prevention, treatment, and recovery support.

In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Charles Koch Foundation seeks to support research projects (e.g. papers, conferences, workshops, etc.) that explore innovative, community-based solutions that are targeted at destroying the root causes of substance abuse. To that end, we are actively soliciting proposals for projects to consider innovative solutions that seek to alleviate substance use disorders. We are especially interested in research that: - Addresses innovative ways to help individuals overcome substance use disorders, prevent drug overdoses, and increase the willingness of individuals to seek treatment for substance abuse. - Explores the root causes of addiction and substance use disorders as well as innovative means to prevent substance abuse by remedying these root causes. - Addresses the unintended consequences of current approaches to reduce drug overdoses and substance abuse. - Examines solutions that offer a proactive approach to fighting addiction rather than a reactive approach focusing on treatment and recovery. - Explores opportunities to reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorders and celebrate success in overcoming addiction and substance abuse.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites Cooperative Agreement (U01) applications from multi-disciplinary and synergistic teams of investigators proposing to identify and characterize the full spectrum of somatic variation in human brain samples and to assess the relationship of such variation with the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders.  This FOA seeks to support applications exploring the extent of somatic variations across different brain regions in one or more psychiatric disorders using state-of-the-art genomic, computational, single-cell and other relevant approaches.  Awards made under this FOA and the companion FOA (PAR-14-173) will be governed by a Brain Somatic Mosaicism (BSM) Network Steering Committee to accelerate scientific progress through the coordination of research strategies, analytical methods and data.  The ultimate goal of this FOA and the companion FOA (PAR-14-173) is to address gaps in our understanding of the role of somatic genomic perturbations in the etiology of neuropsychiatric disorders.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 -Treatment for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness, Serious Emotional Disturbance or Co-Occurring Disorders Experiencing Homelessness (Short Title: Treatment for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness). The purpose of this program is to support the development and/or expansion of the local implementation of an infrastructure that integrates behavioral health treatment and recovery support services for individuals, youth, and families with a serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance or co-occurring disorder (i.e., a serious mental illness [SMI] and substance use disorder [SUD] or a serious emotional disturbance [SED] and SUD who are experiencing homelessness. The goal of this program is to increase capacity and provide accessible, effective, comprehensive, coordinated, integrated, and evidence-based treatment services, peer support and other recovery support services, and linkages to sustainable permanent housing. To achieve this goal, SAMHSA will support three types of activities: (1) integrated behavioral health treatment and other recovery-oriented services; (2) efforts to engage and connect clients to enrollment resources for health insurance, Medicaid, and mainstream benefits (e.g. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), etc.); and (3) coordination of housing and services that support sustainable permanent housing.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the early stage testing of pharmacologic interventions with novel mechanisms of action or device-based interventions, for the treatment of symptoms or domains of altered functions in individuals with mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.). Early intervention studies are also encouraged where symptoms of a disorder have been identified in subjects (a prodromal phase), prior to full diagnostic criteria being met. Ultimately, this FOA is intended to support early stage testing of pharmacologic or device-based interventions using a protocol design where the presumed mechanism of action of the intervention is adequately tested, to provide meaningful information where target modulation yields a dose-dependent neurophysiological/clinical/behavioral effect. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage cooperative agreement applications to support early stage clinical trials of novel mechanism of action, investigational drugs or drug candidates for the treatment of psychiatric disorders in areas of unmet medical need. The FOA will support milestone-driven early stage trials in pediatric and adult populations. First in human (FIH) and Phase Ib studies of novel Agents must assess target engagement (brain exposure), pharmacological effects, safety, and tolerability to assess feasibility for Phase II/proof of concept (PoC) studies in psychiatric disorders. Phase II/PoC studies must evaluate the drug's impact on clinically relevant physiological systems (functional measures) and clinical indicators of effect. The FOA also supports FIH and early feasibility studies (EFS) of novel devices to evaluate target engagement, safety, tolerability, and efficacy. The overall objective is to facilitate rapid collection of data to "de-risk" novel mechanism of action investigational drugs, novel drugs for use in pediatric populations with psychiatric disorders, and devices or combination treatments in order to attract private funding for further clinical development as FDA-approved treatments.

Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) seeks applications to develop, sustain, enhance, and enrich a centralized national biorepository for genetic studies of psychiatric disorders for facilitation and acceleration of the scientific understanding of the genetic risk architecture underlying mental disorders. This effort is expected to involve a functionally integrated, multi-disciplinary team that will provide for open sharing of biosamples and data resources through a single, centralized, national resource to advance basic and translational research in the genetics of mental disorders.

"This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research on the biology of high confidence risk factors associated with complex brain disorders, with a focus on the intracellular, transcellular and circuit substrates of neural function. For the purposes of this FOA, the term "complex" can refer to a multifactorial contribution to risk (e.g., polygenic and/or environmental) and/or highly distributed functional features of the brain disorder. Studies may be either hypothesis-generating (unbiased discovery) or hypothesis-testing in design and may utilize in vivo, in situ, or in vitro experimental paradigms, e.g., model organisms or human cell-based assays. While behavioral paradigms and outcome measures can be incorporated into the research design to facilitate the characterization of intracellular, transcellular and circuit mechanisms, these are neither required nor expected. Studies should not attempt to "model" disorders but instead should aim to elucidate the neurobiological impact of individual or combined risk factor(s), such as the affected molecular and cellular components and their relationships within defined biological process(es). This can include the fundamental biology of these factors, components and processes. The resulting paradigms, component pathways and biological processes should be disseminated with sufficient detail to enrich common and/or federated data resources (e.g., those contributing to the Gene Ontology, Synaptic Gene Ontology, FAIR Data Informatics) in order to bridge the gap between disease risk factors, biological mechanism and therapeutic target identification.
