The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications to pursue invasive neural recording studies focused on mental health-relevant questions. Invasive neural recordings provide an unparalleled window into the human brain to explore the neural circuitry and neural dynamics underlying complex moods, emotions, cognitive functions, and behaviors with high spatial and temporal resolution. Additionally, the ability to stimulate, via the same electrodes, allows for direct causal tests by modulating network dynamics. This funding opportunity aims to target a gap in the scientific knowledge of neural circuit function related to mental health disorders. Researchers should target specific questions suited to invasive recording modalities that have high translational potential. Development of new technologies and therapies are outside the scope of this FOA.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) uses a R61/R33 Phased Innovation Award mechanism to support clinical research applications that are exploratory and developmental in nature and focus on understanding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying Substance Use Disorders (SUD), including fundamental brain function relevant to substance use.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for Silvio O. Conte Centers for Basic Neuroscience or Translational Mental Health Research. The NIMH seeks teams of researchers working at different levels of analysis and employing integrative, novel, and creative experimental approaches to address high-risk, high-impact questions with the primary objectives of: (a) advancing the state of the science in basic brain and behavior research that will uncover and dissect the underlying mechanisms that will ultimately provide the foundation for understanding mental disorders; (b) supporting the integration and translation of basic and clinical neuroscience research on severe mental illnesses; and/or (c) advancing our understanding of the neurobehavioral developmental mechanisms and trajectories of psychopathology that begin in childhood and adolescence. The Conte Centers program is intended to support interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research that demonstrates an extraordinary level of synergy, integration, and potential for advancing the state of the field. This program is intended only for projects that could not be achieved using other, more standard grant mechanisms.

The primary objective of this FOA is to stimulate innovative Convergent Neuroscience (CN) approaches to establish causal and/or probabilistic linkages across contiguous levels of analysis (e.g., gene, molecule, cell, circuit, system, behavior) in an explanatory model of psychopathology. In particular, applicants should focus on how specific constituent biological processes at one level of analysis contribute to quantifiable properties at other levels, either directly or as emergent phenomena.  Although not required, it is preferable that applications link at least three levels of analysis and include an emphasis on genetics. The projects under this FOA will develop novel methods, theories, and approaches through a CN team framework, bringing together highly synergistic inter/transdisciplinary teams from neuroscience and "orthogonal" fields (e.g., data/computational science, physics, engineering, mathematics, and environmental sciences). Successful teams will combine, expand upon, or develop conceptual frameworks and theoretical approaches, and build explanatory computational models that connect contiguous levels of analysis. Such frameworks, theories, and computational explanatory models should be validated through experimental approaches to elucidate biological underpinnings of complex behavioral (including cognitive and affective) outcomes in psychopathology. Additionally, a goal of this program is to advance research in CN by creating a shared community framework of resources which may be used by the broader research community to further research, as such, successful team will have robust plan for sharing data and other resources.

The Society for the Study of Psychiatry and Culture announces its annual call for papers for the Charles Hughes Fellowship and the John Spiegel Fellowship in Cultural Psychiatry. The Charles Hughes Fellowship is an annual award presented to a graduate student who has an interest in and commitment to cultural psychiatry and mental health. The John Spiegel Fellowship is an annual award presented to a resident in clinical training who is dedicated to improving clinical care through culturally-informed practice.

The intent of this Program Announcement is to evaluate the efficacy of evidence-based methods and strategies for rapidly enhancing leader effectiveness, individual and small team performance, and resilience to stressors. Applications that examine the effectiveness of approaches that translate and integrate content into the everyday routines of SMs, first responders, and small teams to enhance psychological health readiness are encouraged. While additional intervention techniques are being sought as part of this award, the goal is not to overload individuals, units, and leaders with new training. Instead, the goal is to ensure that any training that is offered is engaging and proven to be effective. In addition, the intervention does not necessarily have to be training-based. Strategies that include non-intrusive methods are of interest if they improve the health and functioning of individuals, teams, and/or leaders.

This funding opportunity seeks applications to support examinations of efficacy and effectiveness of peer-to-peer support interventions to translate and integrate content into the everyday routines of SMs to enhance psychological health readiness and mitigate negative behavioral health issues including suicide behaviors. Applications should focus on research to evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of peer support programs that could be implemented in the military. Such interventions should leverage public health paradigms such as the social-ecological model, behavior change theory, and adult learning theory. Considerations such as how peer-to-peer support would accommodate military culture, including varied ranks and structure, gender, and occupation requirements should be taken into account. Interventions should be sensitive to the time and contextual constraints associated with occupation and lifestyle. Interventions that include an electronic or virtual component will be considered, but applicants should demonstrate that such components will ensure the interventions are interactive and engaging. Studies should consider ways to integrate content into the everyday routines of SMs to decrease burden and increase buy-in.
