The American Psychological Association is accepting applications to its Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship program, which is designed to nurture young scholars interested in a career child psychology, including child-clinical, pediatric, school, educational, and developmental psychopathology.

The annual program supports graduate-level scholarly projects that use a psychological perspective to increase understanding of and reduce stigma associated with mental illness. The $5,000 scholarship is intended to support research which shows that stigma is a significant barrier to treatment and recovery for many of the 50 million Americans living with mental illness. To be eligible, applicants must be a full-time graduate student in good standing at an accredited university and have demonstrated commitment to stigma issues.

The purpose of the Ungerleider/Zimbardo Travel Scholarships is to help psychology graduate students travel to the American Psychological Foundation  Annual Convention to present their research.

The American College Counseling Association (ACCA) announces two research award opportunities for 2013. 1.  $5000:  This funded research is designed to recognize and honor individuals who are seeking to complete a comprehensive research study. The Funded Research Award provides a cash award of up to $5000.00. Purpose:  The purpose of this financial support is to fund research efforts supporting research related to college counseling practices. 2.  $1000:  This funded research is designed to recognize and honor individuals who are seeking to complete a comprehensive research study. The Funded Research Award provides a cash award of up to $1000.00. These investigations include counseling at community, vocational, and technical institutions as well as colleges and universities. Purpose:  The purpose of this Grant is to support research that increases understanding of professional counseling as it relates to college student populations and the professionals who serve those populations.

This fellowship supports activities related to the psychological understanding of gifted and talented children and adolescents. Up to $20,000 for one-year graduate fellowships are available.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2013 National Resource Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention (YVP-RC) cooperative agreement. The purpose of this jointly funded program is to serve as a national resource and training center to increase the effectiveness of youth violence prevention, prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders, and promotion of the healthy development of children and youth. The YVP-RC will also provide technical assistance for SAMHSA's Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) and Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children's Health (Project LAUNCH) grant programs. Funding for this announcement is from the Youth Violence Prevention program in the amount of $4.599 million (74 percent) and $1.572 million (26 percent) from Project LAUNCH. It is SAMHSA's intent that the YVP-RC provide states/tribes, organizations, and communities with the resources they need to eliminate or reduce the impact of risk factors and promote positive and protective factors for children, youth, young adults, and their families. This program will advance the dissemination and use of prevention research to inform development and implementation of policies and programs across state and tribal agencies. Planning and implementation of statewide prevention programming and policies will be accomplished through the use of a public health approach. The YVP-RC also seeks to address health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities by ensuring that YVP-RC recipients are encouraged to develop and implement strategies to decrease differences in prevalence, access, service use, and outcomes among racial and ethnic minority children, youth, young adults, and families served.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2013 Campus Suicide Prevention grants. The purpose of this program is to facilitate a comprehensive approach to preventing suicide in institutions of higher education. This program is designed to assist colleges and universities build a foundation for their efforts to prevent suicide attempts and completions and to enhance services for students with mental and substance use disorders that put them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. The Campus Suicide Prevention grants support an array of campus activities to help grantees build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective mental health and substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. Successful applicants will provide "roadmap" of the process by which they have assessed or intend to assess suicide prevention needs and plan/implement infrastructure development strategies that meet those needs. The plan put forward in the grant application must show the linkages among needs, the proposed infrastructure development strategy, and increased system capacity that will enhance and sustain effective prevention programs and services which support SAMHSA's Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Strategic Initiative. The plan must also address the needs of youth at high-risk identified by the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention; including, but not limited to: lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), American Indian/Alaska Natives (AVAN), military family members, and veterans.

With the generous support of a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health USA we are pleased to offer stipends in partial support of travel to attend the Fifteenth Annual Meeting of the International Behavioural and Neural Genetics Society (IBANGS).   Travel Stipend Details:          A limited number of stipends are available for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty members who have held faculty rank for less than 5 years.

The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association) announces its 2014 program of awards for outstanding teachers of psychology.  Teaching awards of $1500 and a plaque will be bestowed for outstanding performance in each of six categories: 4-year college or university (Robert S. Daniel Teaching Excellence Award), 2-year college (Wayne Weiten Teaching Excellence Award), high school (Mary Margaret Moffett Memorial Teaching Excellence Award), first 7 years of full-time teaching at any level (Jane S. Halonen Teaching Excellence Award), graduate student (Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award), and the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. The deadline for submissions is January 11, 2014.

This research competition is designed to encourage and reward quality research on issues related to pediatric psychology and health care of children. An award of $1,000 will be made to the winner of the competition.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The over-arching goal of this Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs.  To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development for biomedical researchers who need the requisite knowledge and skills to extract knowledge from biomedical Big Data.  To extend the reach of the course, each educational activity is required to develop open educational resources (OERs) that adhere to FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) principles. Ideally, OERs should be useful to individuals at all career levels, from predoctoral students to established investigators. 

The Kenneth B. and Mamie P. Clark Fund, supports research and demonstration activities that promote the understanding of the relationship between self-identity and academic achievement with an emphasis on children in grade levels K-8. This grant will alternate every other year between an early career psychologist and a graduate student. The 2016 grant will support an early career psychologist. The Kenneth B. and Mamie P. Clark Fund was established in 2003 to honor the Clarks and to perpetuate their work as pioneers in understanding the psychological underpinnings of race relations and in addressing social issues such as segregation and injustice. The Clarks were the first and second African-Americans to receive PhDs from Columbia University. Their famous doll experiments, in which they asked children to express their likes and dislikes about brown-and white-skinned dolls, led the Clarks to conclude that the segregation in schools and society was psychologically damaging to the children. These studies are believed to be the first social science evidence considered as hard fact by the U.S. Supreme court, in Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka.

The Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (CSSI) funds rigorous research to produce practical knowledge that can improve the safety of schools and students. The initiative is carried out through partnerships between researchers, educators and other stakeholders, including law enforcement and mental health professionals. Projects funded under the CSSI are designed to produce knowledge that can be applied to schools and school districts across the nation for years to come. This solicitation includes multiple funding categories with different expectations and requirements to accomplish the purposes of the CSSI.

The purpose of this FOA is to seek out, identify and support bold and innovative approaches designed to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that Ph.D. graduate students and postdoctoral (regardless of funding source) pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research-intensive and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

Wishing to advance research into the health benefits - physical, mental and emotional - of physical activity and sports, the Weiss Research Endowment has been established for ACSM students studying in this field. One project will be funded for applied rather than for basic research, with the intent of applying the results to programs involving physical activity and sports. The psychological and emotional benefits of physical activity are of particular importance to the benefactors of this endowment, Drs. Raymond and Rosalee Weiss, and proposals addressing those issues will be given priority. One reward of $1,500 is available.

The International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) recognizes the vital role of developing the next generation of leaders in the field of bipolar disorders and will offer 4 awards for original research publication submissions. In order to promote research interest in bipolar disorders in developing countries, two of the awards will be reserved for those from low and middle-income countries, as defined by the 2013 World Bank Classification. The awards will be presented in conjunction with the 16th Annual Conference of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders) to be held in Seoul, South Korea from 18-21 March 2014. Eligibility: These awards are open to psychiatric trainees, postgraduate students, and junior faculty up to and including the Assistant Professor rank from around the world, independent of age, nationality, sex, or race. Winners from previous years are not eligible to apply.

This year, the fund will support the Weiss Writing Prize, which will be awarded to the lead author of a pivotal publication in college mental health. American College Health Association Institutional or Individual Members are eligible to apply. The winning article should demonstrate a successful student retention program for those with mental health issues. The program will provide creative, innovative solutions that could be implemented on other campuses. Preference will be given to articles published in the Journal of American College Health.

The purpose of the Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) Program is to develop a diverse group of highly trained biomedical and behavioral scientists to address the Nation's biomedical workforce needs. The strategy is to promote effective partnerships between research-intensive institutions (RII) and institutions that have a historical mission or a demonstrated commitment to educating students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of the nation. The IRACDA program provides support for a traditional mentored postdoctoral research experience at an RII combined with an opportunity for these fellows to develop critical academic skills, including teaching, through workshops and through mentored teaching assignments at a partner institution. The primary goals of the IRACDA program are to (1) develop a group of highly trained biomedical and behavioral scientists who have the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue independent research and teaching careers in academia; and (2) strengthen and modernize science educational offerings at partner institutions, and promote links between RII and the partner institution(s). 

The Roy Scrivner Research Grants provide graduate student grants (preference given to dissertation candidates) for empirical or applied research that encourages the study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) family psychology and LGBT family therapy. Researchers from all fields of the behavioral and social sciences are encouraged to apply.

This fund typically provides grants of $500-$1,000 in support of international scientific meetings.
