This program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences. It is hoped that projects of successful applicants will help advance digital humanistic scholarship by broadening understanding of its nature and exemplifying the robust infrastructure necessary for creating such works. ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships are intended to support an academic year dedicated to work on a major scholarly project that takes a digital form. Projects may: Address a consequential scholarly question through new research methods, new ways of representing the knowledge produced by research, or both; Create new digital research resources; Increase the scholarly utility of existing digital resources by developing new means of aggregating, navigating, searching, or analyzing those resources; Propose to analyze and reflect upon the new forms of knowledge creation and representation made possible by the digital transformation of scholarship. ACLS will award up to six Digital Innovation Fellowships in this competition year. Each fellowship carries a stipend of up to $60,000 towards an academic year's leave and provides for project costs of up to $25,000. ACLS does not support creative works (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translations, or purely pedagogical projects.

To analyze and communicate complex scientific topics is more than just a profession - it is an art.  Medical science journalism is no exception. Accordingly, launching a career as science journalist proves to be an arduous endeavor. To help recognize emerging medical science journalists, Germany's most read medical journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt, the European Union of Science Journalists' Associations (EUSJA), and the World Health Summit (WHS) will grant the "Next Generation of Science Journalists" Award for the second time. The top selected five young professionals will be invited to participate in the WHS 2013 and experience a unique international networking and learning opportunity. This provides a career head-start as the annual World Health Summit attracts some 1000 high-ranking participants from all health-related sectors - from Nobel Prize laureates to CEOs and future leaders. Additionally, each winner will receive 500 Euro to recompense travel expenses.

Named in honor of NED's principal founders, former president Ronald Reagan and the late congressman Dante Fascell, the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is funded by the U.S. Congress to enable democratic practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world to deepen their understanding of democracy and enhance their ability to promote democratic change. Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows maintain full-time residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies, NED's research arm located in Washington, D.C. Dedicated to international exchange, the program offers a collegial environment for fellows to reflect on their experiences and consider lessons learned; conduct research and writing; develop contacts and exchange ideas with counterparts in Washington, D.C.; and build ties that contribute to the development of a global network of democracy advocates. The Forum hosts 16 to 20 Reagan-Fascell Fellows per year, divided into two five-month sessions: Fall Session: October 1 - February 28 Spring Session: March 1 - July 31 The program offers two tracks, a practitioner track and a scholarly track.

One or two awards are given annually by the Organization of American Historians in recognition of outstanding programming on television, or in documentary film, concerned with American history, the study of American history, and/or the promotion of American history. The award honors the late Erik Barnouw, Columbia University, a historian of the mass media. Submissions should be self-contained products even though their content may extend across other media platforms (including podcasts and Web sites). Only films and video programs released January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013 are eligible for entry. The award will be presented at the 2014 OAH Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, April 10-13.

The AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for professional journalists in the science writing field. The awards recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals (rather than institutions, publishers or employers) for their coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics.

The Journalist to Journalist Project of the National Press Foundation is working with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease to offer all-expenses-paid fellowships for health journalists to cover the 44th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Paris, France. Fellowship winners will attend three days of expert training from Tuesday to Thursday, 29-31 October, then cover the conference through Sunday, 3 November 2013.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan is pleased to announce an open competition for assistance awards through this Request for Grant Proposals (RFGP). PAS Kabul invites all eligible organizations (See Section III. Eligibility Requirements on page 5) to submit a proposal for a grant with the U.S. Embassy to enhance the capacity of three Afghan government media relations offices so that their media outreach increases in number and effectiveness and the gap between the Afghan public and their governemnt is narrowed. The grant's goals will be achieved by strengthening the capacity of the ministries to engage in proactive, effective, and truthful outreach to both public and private media. The three ministry media relations offices that this grant will train and support are: the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Independent Directorate for Local Governance. This will be a one-year project, focused on training and production of new stories for a variety of different media. The successful applicant must have strong experience in communications, media training and public relations, with a broad track record in developing and placing stories about the real and measurable progress in Afghanistan with the Afghan media. The successful proposal also must show strong project management experience that demonstrates success in meeting both short- and long-term milestones. Success for this project also will be measured by the number of media activities, the number and impact of stories placed in the media, and the ability of the ministry press office to sustain and carry on this work after the award performance period has been completed.

The Abe Fellowship for Journalists is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects.

America's Media Makers (AMM) grants support the following formats: interactive digital media; film and television projects; and radio projects. Interactive digital media may be websites, games, mobile applications, virtual environments, streaming video, podcasts, or other digital formats. Film and television projects may be single programs or a series addressing significant figures or events and drawing their content from humanities scholarship. They must be intended for national distribution. Radio projects may involve single programs, limited series, or segments within an ongoing program. They may also develop new humanities content to augment existing radio programming or add greater historical background or humanities analysis to the subjects of existing programs. They may be intended for regional or national distribution. NEH encourages projects that feature multiple formats to engage the public in the exploration of humanities ideas. Proposed projects might include complementary components that expand or deepen the audience's understanding of a subject: for example, museum exhibitions, book/film discussion programs, or other formats that engage audiences in new ways. America's Media Makers grants may not, however, be used to support programs' general operating costs. Production grants support the production and distribution of digital projects, films, television programs, radio programs, and related programs that promise to engage the public.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages R01 research grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to investigate whether, and how, heavy involvement in new digital media usage, particularly social media and social networking sites, may influence adolescent alcohol use and drinking patterns, as well as drinking-related problems. This FOA also encourages applications proposing to explore the ways in which new digital media may be utilized as platforms for preventive interventions aimed at underage drinking and related problems.

The Association of Health Care Journalists has teamed up with the National Library of Medicine to present the AHCJ-NLM Fellowships. AHCJ will select four journalists to spend a week on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The selected journalists will: Learn how to explore the latest NIH research Learn to understand and interpret biomedical statistics Take advantage of NLM's data, programs and resources for stronger stories Get hands-on training in PubMed, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, ToxNet and Household Products Database Enhance your medical and scientific reporting through this specialized fellowship. See a sample agenda as an example of the kinds of topics you'll be exposed to. Fellowship includes AHCJ membership (new or renewed), travel expenses within the United States and lodging. The dates of the 2013 fellowship are Sept. 15-19. Application deadline is Aug. 9.

The AHCJ Reporting Fellowships on Health Care Performance are intended to support U.S.-based applicants who have interesting projects in mind for their news outlets that hold the promise of informing and educating the public. Applicants should have a working knowledge of the topic and a good idea of what it will take to complete the project. The project could take several forms. The fellow could choose to evaluate a local health system or a specific local or regional program or an aspect of the national system. An approach might be to compare two health care systems addressing a common problem - access to care for poor and uninsured patients, for example - to see why one community is performing better and why. Fellows pursuing projects such as these would want to consider public data and relevant academic studies in addition to interviews with health care and civic leaders, patients and others.

MacArthur's goal in media grantmaking is to provide the public with high-quality, professionally-produced documentary films, deep and analytical journalism, and well-produced news and public affairs programming. In a media environment characterized by proliferating information sources of varying degrees of reliability, the Foundation seeks to support serious, fact-based journalism for television, radio and the web, the type of original reporting that is likely to be blogged about, linked to, tweeted, and otherwise circulated throughout the Internet. Programs supported by the Foundation inform and educate their viewers about important and under-reported topics, provide balance and accurate information, encourage global conversations, and use technology to tell stories in engaging and interactive ways.

The Division of Public Programs at the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities funds radio, television, and digital projects in the humanities that are intended for public audiences. New application guidelines are now posted on the NEH Web site (www.neh.gov) for America's Media Makers: Development and Production grants. The next deadline is August 14, 2013, and we expect this grant program to be offered again in January 2014.

The American Pyschoanalytic Association is soliciting nominations for the 2013 Award for Excellence in Journalism. Established in 1999, the annual prize recognizes professional reporting of outstanding merit that contributes in an exceptional way to the public understanding of psychoanalytic and psychological principles and phenomena. Any person, including authors, may nominate an article. To be eligible, work must have been written in English, intended for the layperson, and have been first published between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. Nominated work need not be specifically about psychoanalysis or psychotherapy and may critique or question psychoanalysis, as long as it advances understanding of human relationships and/or the life of the mind.

Production grants support the production and distribution of digital projects, films, television programs, radio programs, and related programs that promise to engage the public.

The foundation will award scholarships of up to $5,000 to journalists from the United States or Canada to take religion courses at any accredited college, university, or seminary. The program is open to all full-time journalists working in general-circulation news media, including reporters, editors, designers, copy editors, editorial writers, news directors, researchers, and producers. Journalists can choose any religion, spirituality, or ethics course. Scholarships can cover expenses related to tuition, registration, parking, and books. Online and travel classes are also eligible as long as travel costs are part of the curriculum. Scholarships must be used within three months of the award date.

The Project:Connect-Summer Youth Programming Competition supports single or multi-day participatory and hands-on learning experiences (labs, hackathons, pop-up events) to be held at U.S.-based organizations from July-September, 2013. Workshops or hackathons will support youth working with peers, mentors, and educators on learning and creating experiences toward a better web for all. Based on the principles of Connected Learning-learning that is equitable, social, and participatory-Project:Connect Summer Youth Programs will give young people hands-on experience creating, testing, and investigating ways to make using the web a better place to learn, connect, make, contribute, and share.
