The Interdisciplinary Behavioral and Social Science Research (IBSS) competition promotes the conduct of interdisciplinary research by teams of investigators in the social and behavioral sciences. Emphasis is placed on support for research that involves researchers from multiple SBE disciplinary fields and that integrates scientific theoretical approaches and methodologies from multiple SBE disciplinary fields. Emphasis also is placed on the significance of expected intellectual contributions that are likely to yield generalizable insights and information that will enhance theoretical perspectives and advance basic knowledge and capabilities across multiple SBE disciplinary fields. Although the IBSS competition will consider any proposal that addresses a topic for which the proposal makes a compelling case that the research will enhance broader theoretical understanding across multiple social and behavioral science fields, social and behavioral science researchers are especially encouraged to submit proposals for research on one of the following three broadly defined topics: Population Change; Sources and Consequences of Disparities; and Technology, New Media, and Social Networks.

The goal of this FOA is to inspire and support research projects investigating the role of social media in risk behaviors associated with the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (hereafter referred to as "ATOD") and projects using social media to ameliorate such behaviors. Each research project proposed in response to this FOA must be focused on one of the two distinct areas: 1) observational research using social media interactions as surveillance tools to aid in the understanding of the epidemiology, risk factors, attitudes, and behaviors associated with ATOD use and addiction, or 2) intervention research measuring the reach, engagement, and behavioral and health impact of social media-based interventions for the screening, prevention, and treatment of ATOD use and addiction.

MOVO will be a five-year regional messaging and communication effort that leverages both traditional and new media to counter violent extremism and promote democracy, human rights and governance. MOVO will aim to form lasting partnerships to amplify moderate voices in communities as well as national and regional networks and institutions. MOVO will use a strategic information campaigns to tackle difficult, long-standing issues critical to VE vulnerability as well as to respond directly to events and hot topics. MOVO will integrate with other USG CVE and messaging efforts, such as State and USAID-funded programs, Public Affairs Sections and Military Information Support Teams (MIST) in the region. With regard to mediums of information exchange, MOVO will strengthen and expand existing PDev II radio networks and programming, continuing to invest in the medium most easily accessible to rural communities at-risk. However, MOVO will also produce targeted video content in targeted countries that is easily sharable and of most interest to target demographics. Mobile platforms that leverage feature phones have proved wildly popular and are useful in engaging rural audiences. Social media offers exciting new opportunities to connect with target audiences. However, poor internet penetration in target areas and among target demographics may limit the applicability of the medium. MOVO will expand its emphasis on social media in a measured, iterative manner that builds on effective, cost-efficient approaches. To the extent possible, all content will be cross-promoted across radio, video, mobile and social media to increase dissemination and build audiences across demographics and platforms.

The George Polk Investigative Grants are given to experienced reporters to pursue reporting projects relating to social justice. The intent is to promote public awareness of social problems in immigration, housing, welfare, health, employment and other areas and to promote investigative articles on the Web as well as in print. Special consideration will be given to journalists who are no longer employed by their news organizations, but this is not an absolute requirement. Ideally, an applicant should have a proven track record as an investigative reporter and propose an article on a subject with which he or she is familiar. The program is intended as a resource for a reporter who always has wanted to dig into a particular topic or has developed useful expertise - who knows "where the bodies are buried" - in an area of social importance. Grants will range from $2500 to $10,000, depending on the duration and complexity of the project. The Polk program will provide some editorial supervision and assist when necessary in helping to place the article, but the primary responsibility for this rests with the reporter. Any fees or payment will be retained by the reporter. We do not fund book projects. We request that recipients keep a record, whenever possible, of the circulation/viewership of the publication/production and of the number of hits the article receives on the Website. An applicant must provide a detailed prospectus, along with a resume, two references and a letter expressing interest in the project from a news organization. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, beginning June 1, 2013. All information will be confidential.

To that end, four or five grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded to filmmakers in support of thought-provoking, vibrant, intelligent, original, and moving projects in the screenwriting or development phase that explore current social issues through plot, character, theme, and/or setting. Projects should have strong and recognizable social value and contribute to a greater public understanding of a disenfranchised group, identify an area where social change is needed, and/or bring to light a complex and/or inspirational story, condition, or issue. This FOA also encourages applications proposing to explore the ways in which new digital media may be utilized as platforms for preventive interventions aimed at underage drinking and related problems.

The Pop Culture Collaborative represents an innovative hub for high impact partnerships and grants designed to help organizations and individuals leverage the reach and power of pop culture for social justice goals. Pop Up Rapid Response Grants are designed to help organizations working to build movements, drive campaigns, produce stories, and leverage media and entertainment mediums to drive positive narrative and social change in popular culture. Funded projects must impact, support, or engage at least one of these community groups: people of color, immigrants, refugees, or Muslims. Examples of funded projects include public events and private retreats; tool and resource prototypes; network and partnership building; story, narrative, and strategy design process; and creative content including short film/video, concerts, music recordings, etc. Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000. Requests may be submitted at any time by nonprofit organizations, for-profit organizations, and individuals. The program is a two-part initiative designed to foster new connections between scholars and journalists covering international affairs and, to that end, offers an interrelated set of awards, including programming grants for universities and fellowships for scholars in the humanities and social sciences who study religion in international contexts. To be eligible, applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States as of the application deadline date; have a PhD degree that was conferred by the application deadline; and be able to attend and participate in two program-sponsored events.

Grant applications are open to individuals and NFP educational, cultural and/or social justice organizations for projects meeting our Mission's objectives that utilize Fine Arts, Dance, Music, Theater, Creative Writing, Poetry, Photography, or those that create Educational Reels (only) with teaching guides of documentaries or have Public Interest Platforms/Forums such as Independent Journalists or those NFPs which engage in community non-partisan discussions.

The Princess Grace Foundation-USA, in partnership with the Ford Foundation, is accepting nominations for its 2013 JustFilms Documentary Awards program, which seeks to identify and support voices from underrepresented communities with authentic and powerful stories to tell. This year, priority will be given to social justice films by Native/Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Grant amounts are contingent on the size of the project budget. Nominations must be submitted by deans/department chairs in conjunction with the faculty of established U.S. colleges and universities or by directors of nonprofit media arts organizations with structured film production programs that the foundation has invited to apply. Candidates from colleges and universities must be full-time students or matriculated but have not yet completed their thesis films, have completed at least one film as director, be the director of the proposed thesis film, and be a United States citizen or be able to demonstrate proof of permanent resident status.

The Project:Connect-Summer Youth Programming Competition supports single or multi-day participatory and hands-on learning experiences (labs, hackathons, pop-up events) to be held at U.S.-based organizations from July-September, 2013. Workshops or hackathons will support youth working with peers, mentors, and educators on learning and creating experiences toward a better web for all. Based on the principles of Connected Learning-learning that is equitable, social, and participatory-Project:Connect Summer Youth Programs will give young people hands-on experience creating, testing, and investigating ways to make using the web a better place to learn, connect, make, contribute, and share.

PAS Islamabad invites all eligible organizations (see Section C for Eligibility Requirements) to submit proposals for a Grant or Cooperative Agreement to support activities focused on providing media training and professional development to professionals in the media field through one of the activity areas specified in this NOFO. PAS Islamabad invites proposals for projects that focus on one of the priority areas specified below. Applicants should pay close attention to the Public Affairs Section's goals, priority program areas, target audiences, and geographic locations when developing their proposals. Goals: The goals of this funding opportunity are to: 1. Strengthen People-to-People ties between the United States and Pakistan to increase professional and personal interaction between American media experts and local trainers with Pakistani journalists. 2. Expand Media Engagement by providing training to journalists in new or traditional forms of media that also support professional standards in journalism; increasing participants' knowledge and skills in producing and reporting quality news stories, exposing them to high professional standards, and empowering them to communicate news more effectively to the Pakistani public. Grants support the development and implementation of an integrated set of courses and student engagement activities focusing on significant humanities content. A common topic, theme, or compelling issue or question must link the courses and activities. The linked courses (a minimum of three) may fulfill general education or core curriculum requirements but could also be designed primarily for students in a particular major or course of study. The Humanities Connections program gives special encouragement to projects that foster collaboration between humanities faculty and their counterparts in the social and natural sciences and pre-service or professional programs in business, engineering, health sciences, law, computer science, and other non-humanities fields.

As part of broader university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, the Office of the President and the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS) have issued a special call for proposals to conduct research, scholarship, or creative activities in the areas of social justice, human rights, diversity, and inclusion. Proposals may be submitted in any of these areas, but must address a scholarly question that will lead to testable objectives or measurable outcomes.
