The U.S. Mission in Iraq announces an open competition for eligible organizations to submit proposals for a cooperative agreement to develop and implement the Media Training for Journalists in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region program. Public Affairs Section (PA) Baghdad seeks to enable Iraqi and U.S. experts to engage with Iraqi audiences, in person and via virtual platforms, on a variety of topics in accordance with Mission Iraq goals through this program. The Media Training for Journalists in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region program will provide five to ten targeted trainings for Iraqi Kurdistan Region-based journalists to improve the overall level of professionalism and adherence to ethical standards. Trainings should focus on key demographics such as women, ethnic and religious minorities, journalists at religiously-affiliated media outlets and journalists from outlets considered primary news sources in regions recently controlled by ISIS.

To analyze and communicate complex scientific topics is more than just a profession - it is an art.  Medical science journalism is no exception. Accordingly, launching a career as science journalist proves to be an arduous endeavor. To help recognize emerging medical science journalists, Germany's most read medical journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt, the European Union of Science Journalists' Associations (EUSJA), and the World Health Summit (WHS) will grant the "Next Generation of Science Journalists" Award for the second time. The top selected five young professionals will be invited to participate in the WHS 2013 and experience a unique international networking and learning opportunity. This provides a career head-start as the annual World Health Summit attracts some 1000 high-ranking participants from all health-related sectors - from Nobel Prize laureates to CEOs and future leaders. Additionally, each winner will receive 500 Euro to recompense travel expenses.

The Journalist to Journalist Project of the National Press Foundation is working with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease to offer all-expenses-paid fellowships for health journalists to cover the 44th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Paris, France. Fellowship winners will attend three days of expert training from Tuesday to Thursday, 29-31 October, then cover the conference through Sunday, 3 November 2013.

Scholarships are available to full-time journalists in the U.S. and Canada. Scholarships are valid for accredited theology schools, university-related divinity schools, or college/university departments of religion/philosophy, and can be used for traditional courses, shorter intensive courses or distance-learning courses. Applicants must show evidence of employment as a full-time journalist in the news media. Journalists in any position or beat are eligible. Journalists working for religious media-including media supporting or promoting a particular religion, faith community or religious group-are not eligible. Scholarships are awarded as stipends of up to $5,000 each. They may cover: tuition, books, application fees, registration fees, lab fees, child care, activity fees and other expenses related to the course.  Applicants are funded for no more than four courses during the project, and only one course per application period (now through July 31, 2014). Recipients must submit a 1,000-word maximum report detailing the course, benefits, challenges, course grade and syllabus within 30 days of receiving official grade.

To support the interest of journalists in developing their English language skills, the Embassy of the United States has supported English courses for journalists in six cities of Kazakhstan. On the basis of this experience, the Embassy intends to continue this program to help more Kazakhstani journalists enhance their knowledge of professional English and apply their knowledge of English to advance their careers.

The Association of Health Care Journalists has teamed up with the National Library of Medicine to present the AHCJ-NLM Fellowships. AHCJ will select four journalists to spend a week on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The selected journalists will: Learn how to explore the latest NIH research Learn to understand and interpret biomedical statistics Take advantage of NLM's data, programs and resources for stronger stories Get hands-on training in PubMed, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, ToxNet and Household Products Database Enhance your medical and scientific reporting through this specialized fellowship. See a sample agenda as an example of the kinds of topics you'll be exposed to. Fellowship includes AHCJ membership (new or renewed), travel expenses within the United States and lodging. The dates of the 2013 fellowship are Sept. 15-19. Application deadline is Aug. 9.

An enormous appetite for professional training exists among Pakistan's journalists. The industry has expanded rapidly in the past decade with the privatization of television but the training opportunities have not kept pace. Journalism education emphasizes the theoretical over the practical. The majority of Pakistan's media companies do not offer training to their staff and salaries are low, so journalists struggle to pay for training themselves. Thus the proposal to create a Center of Journalism Excellence will fill a major gap in providing much needed journalism skills training. The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad announces an open competition for a cooperative agreement to establish a Center of Journalism Excellence (CJE) by a U.S. or foreign university housing a journalism school of international stature, or U.S. or foreign media development organization that offers in-service professional development training for journalists of the highest quality. Accredited U.S. four-year colleges and universities must meet the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3). Strong preference will be given to applications in which the primary grantee is explicitly linked with a Pakistani partner institution(s) and there is a clear path to sustainability. Additional preference will be given to proposals that include cost sharing by a foundation or non-governmental organization.

The AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for professional journalists in the science writing field. The awards recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals (rather than institutions, publishers or employers) for their coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics. Since their inception in 1945, the awards have gone to more than 400 individuals for their achievements in science journalism. The winning journalists have helped to foster the public's understanding and appreciation of science. Independent screening and judging committees select the winning journalists and their entries based on scientific accuracy, initiative, originality, clarity of interpretation and value in fostering a better understanding of science by the public. Committees composed of reporters and editors judge the entries. The decisions of the judging committees are final. The 2014 awards will be presented at the AAAS Annual Meeting in San Jose, Calif. in February 2015. The award for each category is $3,000. AAAS will reimburse winners for reasonable travel and hotel expenses. In cases of multiple authors or producers, only one person's travel expenses will be covered.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan is pleased to announce an open competition for eligible organizations to submit applications to carry out a program to improve access to information for journalists and civil society in accordance with Afghanistan's Access to Information Law. Based on funding availability, this grant intends to develop and provide training for journalists and members of civil society on access to information procedures under Afghan law. The recipient will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the current legal framework surrounding access to information in Afghanistan, and create a strategic plan that will increase awareness of the law and how to use it. Participants will become more aware of the law, how it works, and how to make access to information requests. A successful proposal will include a detailed plan for recruiting a diverse group of journalists from a variety of outlets and employees from a cross-section of civil society organizations working on democracy and governance issues to take part in these trainings. Training activities should take place in Kabul and in no less than five provincial capitals.

This project will provide two separate streams of English training, one for journalists and one for export-oriented business professionals, for the purpose of giving both audiences the necessary language skills to communicate more effectively. For journalists, the project will enable participants to more effectively research and develop stories in English, and to represent current events in Afghanistan to a larger international audience. For export-oriented business professionals, the course will enhance their ability to engage in relationship-building and transactions with other English speakers, with the intent of boosting international trade. The successful applicant is expected to administer and conduct English courses for each group, separately, over a 12-month period to at least 80 participants for each of the two separate streams. The courses will include topics and vocabulary relevant to each audience, and will improve participants' English ability in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. To target the skills development of women, gender balance among participants will be taken into consideration in the selection process.

The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States of America in Islamabad, Pakistan, is pleased to announce an open competition for assistance awards through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). PAS Islamabad invites all eligible organizations (see Section C for Eligibility Requirements) to submit proposals for a Grant or Cooperative Agreement to support activities focused on providing media training and professional development to professionals in the media field through one of the activity areas specified in this NOFO. PAS Islamabad invites proposals for projects that focus on one of the priority areas specified below. Applicants should pay close attention to the Public Affairs Section's goals, priority program areas, target audiences, and geographic locations when developing their proposals. Goals: The goals of this funding opportunity are to: 1. Strengthen People-to-People ties between the United States and Pakistan to increase professional and personal interaction between American media experts and local trainers with Pakistani journalists. 2. Expand Media Engagement by providing training to journalists in new or traditional forms of media that also support professional standards in journalism; increasing participants' knowledge and skills in producing and reporting quality news stories, exposing them to high professional standards, and empowering them to communicate news more effectively to the Pakistani public. The Abe Fellowship for Journalists is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects.

Entries for the 2013 Awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism are now being accepted. The awards recognize the best health reporting in print, broadcast and online media across 12 categories. Since 2004, the Awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism have recognized the best health reporting in print, broadcast and online media. The contest was created by journalists for journalists and is not influenced or funded by commercial or special-interest groups. The contest retains its topic-based categories, where entries compete head-to-head no matter whether they appeared in magazines, newspapers, trade publications or on radio or television stations or websites. "This contest showcases the high level of reporting being done nationally and around the world on vital health and health policy issues," said Julie Appleby, AHCJ's contest chair and a senior correspondent at Kaiser Health News, a nonprofit news service based in Washington, D.C.

 We are seeking an organization that has experience in working in local languages and working with vernacular journalists, and especially organizations or institutions with linkages to India and specifically South India. The grantee would need to work with local partners in each of the three states in our district to develop online materials and coursework for vernacular journalists.

Support Shared Security - Projects for consideration in this category could/should support and advance cooperation between the United States and Turkey on defeating ISIS/DAESH and other extremist groups; projects in Turkey that support advancing stability in Syria; all facets of counterterrorism efforts; and transnational crime. Also, projects that support and advance cooperation between the United States and Turkey in NATO and other multilateral security organizations. Strengthen Economic Prosperity: Promoting Innovation and Fostering Entrepreneurship - Depending on the level of entrepreneurial opportunity and ability in the targeted region(s) for the activity, proposals here could include trainings to introduce the concept and principles of entrepreneurship, promote networking and mentorship opportunities, provide small-and-medium enterprise (SME) development planning, teach marketing and outreach techniques, foster research and development/innovation, etc. Reinforce Democratic Values: Media - Proposals should support journalists and/or citizen journalists through trainings or activities to bolster media literacy, investigative journalism, social media/internet publishing, research and fact checking, documentary filmmaking, visual or other storytelling, etc.

The Information Office (IO) in the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States of America in Islamabad, Pakistan, is pleased to announce a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for an assistance award through the Public Diplomacy Grants program. PAS Islamabad invites organizations to submit proposals for an award to provide training to media professionals through the program specified in this specified in this NOFO. Programs will take place in various locations in Pakistan including Islamabad, Karachi, Kyber Paktunkhwa and the newly merged tribal areas (the former FATA). The objective of this program is to strengthen Pakistan's free press. Its aim is to strengthen the capacity of journalists and the accuracy of reporting in Pakistan. This program seeks to address the gaps in their professional knowledge by providing training to journalists in new or traditional forms of media that also support professional standards in journalism, increasing participants' knowledge and skills in producing and reporting quality news stories, and exposing them to high professional standards.

The Los Angeles-based ECMC Foundation is accepting proposals from organizations or institutions interested in developing and managing a program to help a diverse cohort of journalists expand their awareness about postsecondary career and technical education. This competitive grant process will lead to the identification of one organization selected to receive funding. Proposed concepts should include a plan to recruit and select program participants, offer innovative programming to build a community of practice among participants, and provide ongoing support for journalists seeking to advance in their career and/or refine their skills. The ideal program will engage participants throughout their involvement, allow for the exchange of ideas, and offer mentorship opportunities.
