The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is a national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for audiologists, speech-language pathologists, speech, language, and hearing scientists, audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel, and students. ASHA's Advancing Academic-Research Careers Award is intended to support the academic-research careers of junior-level faculty in the field of communication sciences and disorders. The program funds projects that include both a teaching and a research component.

The Linguistics Program supports basic science in the domain of human language, encompassing investigations of the grammatical properties of individual human languages, and of natural language in general. Research areas include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, and phonology. The program encourages projects that are interdisciplinary in methodological or theoretical perspective, and that address questions that cross disciplinary boundaries, such as (but not limited to): What are the psychological processes involved in the production, perception, and comprehension of language? What are the computational properties of language and/or the language processor that make fluent production, incremental comprehension or rapid learning possible? How do the acoustic and physiological properties of speech inform our theories of language and/or language processing? What role does human neurobiology play in shaping the various components of our linguistic capacities? How does language develop in children? What social and cultural factors underlie language variation and change?

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) invites applications for Clinical Research Center Grants designed to advance the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and amelioration of human communication disorders. For this announcement, Clinical Research is defined as research involving individuals with communication disorders or data/tissues from individuals with a communication disorder. Examples of such research include but are not limited to, studies of the prevention, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, management or epidemiology of a disease or disorder of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, or language. Applications may propose a clinical trial but are not required to (optional).

The purpose of the NIDCD Research Career Enhancement Award for Established Investigators (K18) program is to enable established, proven investigators to augment or redirect their research programs through the acquisition of new research skills to answer questions relevant to the hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language sciences. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary study to an existing trial, as part of their research and career development. Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial, or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to companion FOA PAR-18-NNN

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to improve the health outcomes for individuals with deafness and other communication disorders through effectiveness and health services research in the NIDCD mission areas of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language.

The NIDCD Early Career Research (ECR) Award (R21) is intended to support both basic and clinical research from scientists who are beginning to establish an independent research career. It cannot be used for thesis or dissertation research. The research must be focused on one or more of the areas within the biomedical and behavioral scientific mission of the NIDCD: hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, or language. The NIDCD ECR Award R21 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; translational research; outcomes research; and development of new research technology. Irrespective of the type of project, the intent of the NIDCD ECR Award R21 is for the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) (PD(s)/PI(s)) to obtain sufficient preliminary data for a subsequent R01 application. Only one NIDCD Early Career Research Award (ECR) application may be submitted by a PD/PI per due date. Applicants will be considered ineligible for this funding opportunity if they submit an R01, R03, R15 or any other R21 application, with NIDCD as the primary IC, for the same review cycle that the NIDCD ECR Award (R21) application is submitted.

ASHA's Advancing Academic-Research Careers Award is intended to support the academic research careers of junior-level faculty in the field of communication sciences and disorders. The program funds projects that include both a teaching and a research component. Recipients work in conjunction with mentors to develop mentored teaching and research plans tailored to the applicant's career stage. The plans - which should propose specific teaching and research activities to be completed under the guidance of the mentors during the eighteen-month funding period - are submitted as part of the AARC application. In support of ASHA's strategic objectives, applications that focus the mentored teaching and/or research component on clinical practice research, implementation science, and interprofessional education and interprofessional practice are particularly encouraged. In 2018, ASHA will award up to ten grants of $5,000 each. To be eligible, applicants must have a research doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent); a full-time tenure or non-tenure track faculty appointment in a CSD department in an academic institution in the United States at the time of disbursement; primary responsibilities that include teaching and research; and fewer than six years of teaching/research experience or status below the level of associate professor.
