The USAID Research and Innovation Fellowships aim to build a sustainable model for knowledge exchange by connecting bright American minds with key in-country organizations to collaboratively apply science, technology, and innovation to complex development challenges. The Fellowships offer unique opportunities for Fellows to provide critical research and technical expertise to exciting, progressive projects and initiatives with tangible and finite goals. Additionally, the Fellowships allow for complementary program design, incorporating the needs of the host organization within the scope of the Fellows' existing studies and research. Ultimately, the Fellowships hope to foster stronger human networks and improve sharing of organizational best practices under the umbrella of science, technology, and innovation for stronger development. The Fellowships will be piloted in seven initial countries: Brazil, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Senegal, and South Africa. Through a partnership with the U.S. National Science Foundation, and drawing upon the university resources of the Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN), USAID will fund over 300 Fellows in 2014.

The Security and Preparedness (SAP) Programsupports basic scientific research that advances knowledge and understanding of issues broadly related to global and national security. Research proposals are evaluated on the criteria of intellectual merit and broader impacts; the proposed projects are expected to be theoretically motivated, conceptually precise, methodologically rigorous, and empirically oriented. Substantive areas include (but are not limited to) international relations, global and national security, human security,political violence, state stability, conflict processes, regime transition, international and comparative political economy, and peace science. Moreover, the Program supports research experiences for undergraduate students and infrastructural activities, including methodological innovations. The Program does not fund applied research. The Challenger Society has members in Universities, research institutes, regulatory agencies and more widely in the UK and indeed worldwide. The society thereby is the main academic society representing the UK academic marine research community. It also has strong links to and members with the UK marine technology sector and policy community. The UK marine science community is strong, large and world-leading with its ships and scientists operating around the world. The Society was founded in 1906 and over a century later brings together scientists working and researching in all areas of the marine sciences.

Emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring together scientists preferably from different disciplines (e.g. from chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering) to focus on problems in the life sciences. The research teams must be international. The principal applicant must be from one of the eligible countries. However, other participating scientists and laboratories may be situated anywhere in the world.

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology.  The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site.  For FY 2013, these BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation in Biology; (2) Intersections of Biology and Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering; (3) National Plant Genome Initiative Postdoctoral Research Fellowships; and (4) International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology.  These areas change periodically as new scientific and infrastructure opportunities present themselves. For this reason, this solicitation will be changed as necessary to reflect the areas being funded.

Awards support research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan's international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in wider regional and global contexts and is comparative and contemporary in nature. Research should contribute to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of issues of concern to Japan and the United States. Appropriate disciplines for the research include anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, linguistics, political science, psychology, public administration, and sociology. Awards usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. The fellowships are designed for researchers with advanced language skills whose research will require use of data, sources, and documents in their original languages or whose research requires interviews onsite in direct one-on-one contact. Fellows may undertake their projects in Japan, the United States, or both, and may include work in other countries for comparative purposes. Projects may be at any stage of development.

Research proposals are expected to be theoretically motivated, conceptually precise, methodologically rigorous, and empirically oriented. Substantive areas include, but are not limited to, American government and politics, comparative government and politics, international relations, political behavior, political economy, and political institutions.In recent years, program awards have supported research projects on bargaining processes; campaigns and elections, electoral choice, and electoral systems; citizen support in emerging and established democracies; democratization, political change, and regime transitions; domestic and international conflict; international political economy; party activism; political psychology and political tolerance. The United States-Israel Collaboration in Computer Science (USICCS) program is a joint program of NSF and the United States - Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF). The program supports research projects that develop new knowledge in the areas of theory of computing; algorithm design and analysis; design, verification, and evaluation of software systems; and revolutionary computing models based on emerging scientific ideas.

The aims of Science Learning+ are to strengthen the research and knowledge base; bridge the practice and research gap; and/or share knowledge and experience in informal science,technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experiences. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to support practice-based research which falls within or across the following priority areas: understanding learning; engagement in STEM; skills development; equity; diversity; access to informal learning settings; and measurement of outcomes. Proposals must address at least one priority area and include:collaborations between at least one organization in the US and one in the UK/Republic of Ireland. In addition, the proposal should include a substantive research program, not solely a public engagement activity; genuine partnerships between researchers and practitioners of STEM engagement; experts from more than one STEM area; and more than one informal STEM learning location, platform, or environment. Proposers should submit a single,comprehensive proposal with two budget components, one for US activities and one for UK/Republic of Ireland activities, to NSF.

The Division of Computer and Network Systems (CNS) within the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) supports research and education activities that seek to develop a better understanding of the fundamental properties of computer and network systems. The Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS) program in the CNS division supports transformative research on fundamental scientific and technological advances leading to the development of Next Generation Internet (NGI) and Advanced Wireless Networking (AWN) systems and technologies. NSF/CISE and the European Commission's (EC) Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) seek to enable US and European Union (EU) researchers to collaborate to address compelling research challenges in NGI and AWN. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, software-defined infrastructures; network function virtualization; resource management in support of content delivery; open data architectures for shared, federated research infrastructures; advanced wireless technologies; and research software tools to support advanced wireless and smart city/community testbeds.

This program will provide training for public-health professionals and students in basic and applied public-health science, and public-health program planning, implementation and evaluation on a regional level; 2. Strengthen regional, national and local capacity in Central America to conduct public-health science; to plan, implement and evaluate public-health programs and surveillance systems; and to develop interventions; 3. Support national and regional disease prevention, detection, and control efforts in Central America, including rapid response to public health emergencies; and 4. Incorporate lessons learned from evaluations and assessments of programs to control and eradicate diseases in Guatemala and the Central America Region, and ensure sharing of expertise with public-health partners in the Region.

This Programme grants 4 PhD scholarships and further financial support throughout the preparation of the PhD dissertation. It has been selected for funding by the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology (FCT) for the next 4 editions. This is an international and inter-university programme,with the participation of the most relevant Portuguese History departments from the University of Lisbon (Institute of Social Sciences and Faculty of Letters), ISCTE- Lisbon University Institute, Portuguese Catholic University and University of Évora. Classes run in Lisbon from 15 September 2013 onwards. Courses and seminars run predominantly in English. Enrolled students receive monitoring assistance by tutors and supervisors.

Travel bursaries are available to participate in this project, which uses Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring' to explore the relationship between arts and science research through two workshops at the University of York and Birkbeck, London in 2013, the first at York on Friday 1st March 2013. We can offer a limited amount of bursaries for up to £50 (on provision of receipts) to post-graduates and early career researchers for travel to York. We welcome applications from students across the Humanities and Sciences and hope this will be a lively day full of discussion, inviting participants to share an informal five-minute summary of their work in a final roundtable. Deadline: The deadline for receipt of short-term and summer research grant applications and supporting materials is March 1, 2013. Applicants will be notified approximately one month later. Eligibility: These Title VIII grants are available to American academic experts and practitioners, including advanced graduate students, engaged in specialized research requiring access to Washington, DC and its research institutions. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, in order to be considered eligible for this grant opportunity. This is a residential program requiring visiting scholars to remain in the Washington, DC area and to forego other academic and professional obligations for the duration of the grant. Short-term grants offer a stipend for one month, while summer research grants provide support for two months. Both opportunities include residence at the Wilson Center. Project Scope: EES offers residential summer and short-term research grants to scholars working on policy relevant projects on East Europe. While Southeast Europe remains a primary focus, projects on Central Europe and the Baltic states are also eligible. Through Grand Challenges for Development (GCD), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its partners are sourcing, selecting, and accelerating science, technology, and business model innovations that have the potential to achieve large-scale development impact. Securing Water for Food: A Grand Challenge for Development (SWFF) is part of a portfolio of 7 GCDs, each tackling a critical and complex development challenge. SWFF's objective is to enable the production of more food with less water and/or make more water available for food production, processing, and distribution in developing and emerging countries. It is jointly funded by USAID, the South African Department of Science and Technology, Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the Foreign Ministry of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (collectively, the "Founding Partners"). This is the fourth Call for Proposals (RFA) under Securing Water for Food.

The Neotropical Grassland Conservancy donates equipment and money to local scientists and direct conservation projects and educational programs. Our philosophy promotes cost-effective ways to impact conservation of grasslands, empowers local people and launches careers, and creates a valuable network of promising scientists and students. We are dedicated to: (1) conservation - promoting the conservation of savannas, gallery forests, wetlands, and associated ecosystems in Central and South America, and (2) collaboration - fostering mutually beneficial collaboration between North American and Central and South American scientists and institutions by providing shared scientific and educational opportunities. The Research Equipment Program provides basic science equipment to scientists and students in the American tropics to assist their research opportunities and education. Many outstanding researchers need essentials such as microscopes, GPS units, mist nets, video cameras, binoculars, and science textbooks. Equipment is either donated or purchased and sent to Latin America at relatively little expense. The intent of the program is that donated equipment and literature be of general use to a variety of projects, students and researchers.
