The Association of Historians of American Art (AHAA) offers two grants of $500 each to defray College Art Association conference expenses, including transportation, housing, and registration fees, for presenting members. The first grant is for an ABD graduate student in American art history who is currently enrolled in a graduate program and will travel to CAA's annual conference to appear on the meeting program. The second grant is to support a contingent faculty member or museum staff person whose work engages with the art of the United States, does not have access to travel funds from their institution of employment, and will travel to CAA's annual conference to appear on the meeting program. Applications for Travel Grants are due by December 1 and must include a short cv and letter of interest. The letter should indicate which award is being applied for - Professional or Graduate Student - and must include the applicant's paper and session title as they appear on the CAA program. For the Professional award, applicants should also address their institutional affiliation. The two winners of the AHAA Travel Grant must be members of AHAA at the time of their application. All qualified candidates will be entered into a lottery and the winners selected at random. Applicants will be notified via email by December 15. Applications for the Cushwa Center's five research funding programs are due December 31, 2018.  Grants and awards fund research in repositories at the University of Notre Dame and beyond.  Research Travel Grants assist scholars visiting the Notre Dame Archives and Hesburgh Libraries.  Peter R. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants support research in Roman archives for projects on U.S. Catholic history.  Mother Theodore Guerin Research Travel Grants support research focused on Catholic women in modern history.  Hesburgh Research Travel Grants support projects using the Theodore M. Hesburgh Papers and related collections at the Notre Dame Archives.  Hibernian Research Awards provide travel funds for the scholarly study of Irish and Irish American history.  

The Mercurians have established two initiatives to support research in the history of communication technologies. Both are intended for new or junior scholars. The first is a prize for the best article published during the previous two years in any peer-reviewed journal. The second is a travel grant to defray the costs of travel and housing to use a research collection. The prize and the grant will be awarded in alternating years. We presented the first two travel grants-of US$1,000 each-during the 2011 SHOT annual meeting in Cleveland.  The first article prize has been deferred until 2014 (see below). Rationale One of the Mercurians' missions is to encourage scholarship in the history of communication technologies. There is no prize or travel grant program (either within or outside SHOT) that we are aware of dedicated to supporting scholarship on the history of communication technologies. While the history of communication technology literature is vast and always growing, the quality of the research effort or resulting publication too often falls short of scholarly expectations. The Mercurians are hopeful that these new publication and travel awards will help to both increase and raise the level of new scholarship concerning the history of communication technologies.

The Foundation awards travel grants to individual scholars to support historical research on Venice and the former Venetian empire, and for the study of contemporary Venetian society and culture. Disciplines of the humanities and social sciences are eligible areas of study, including (but not limited to) archaeology, architecture, art, bibliography, economics, history, history of science, law, literature, music, political science, religion, and theater.One of the Venetian Research Program grants awarded will be designated as the Henry A. Millon Award in Art and Architectural History. Applicants and grantees are advised to plan for the added difficulties surrounding travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are restrictions on both international and domestic travel. Additionally, access to archives and other research institutions can be difficult to ascertain and continue to change. Grantees should consult the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization and the Italian health authorities when planning their travel and research. To support scholars, the Foundation has lengthened the grant period to a two-year timeframe. Grantees will be able to adjust their travel plans and submit an updated itinerary. Each will be asked to confirm the accessibility of their research sites. Grant payments will be provided close to each scholar's research period. We hope that this added flexibility will allow scholars to stay safe while moving forward with their important work.

The German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington, DC, is delighted to announce eight travel grants to young scholars (four from European and four from American institutions) in the field of German Studies for the 2014 German Studies Association (GSA) conference. Preference will be given to fellows whose projects fit into the GHI's research foci. We especially invite applications from doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars who will not receive funding from their home institutions. The travel grant aims to improve the professional opportunities for outstanding, internationally-orientated humanities scholars by enabling them to participate in the 2014 GSA conference in Kansas City, MO. Recipients will have to present their work at the 2014 GSA convention. Successful applicants from European universities will receive a travel grant of 1,700.00 Euro. Successful applicants from US institutions will receive a travel grant of 1,200.00 USD.

The Dole Archive and Special Collections is now accepting applications for 2019 Travel Grants.  The travel grant program is intended to defray costs associated with research-related travel to the Dole Institute.  This program offers reimbursements of up to $750 to undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and independent scholars. The Dole Archives at the Dole Institute of Politics houses Senator Bob Dole's extensive collections that document his 36-year career in the House and Senate.  While in residence, grant recipients will use these collections, which encompass a wide range of legislative, historical, and policy issues. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  There is no deadline to apply, and applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted. 

The Helmerich Center for American Research offers several travel-to-collections grants to support research projects that require on-site use of its collections. Through the competition, grants of up to $6,000 will be awarded to help meet the costs of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials; costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses. Franklin grants are made for noncommercial research and are not intended to meet the expenses of attending conferences or the costs of publication. The society does not pay overhead or indirect costs to any institution, and grant funds are not to be used to pay income tax on the award. Grants will not be made to replace salary during a leave of absence or earnings from summer teaching; pay living expenses while working at home; cover the costs of consultants or research assistants; or purchase permanent equipment such as computers, cameras, tape recorders, or laboratory apparatus. Applicants are expected to have a doctorate or to have published work of doctoral character and quality. PhD candidates are not eligible to apply, but the society is interested in supporting the work of young scholars who have recently received the doctorate. Independent scholars and faculty members at all four- and two-year research and non-research institutions are welcome to apply provided that all eligibility guidelines are met. American citizens and residents of the United States may use their Franklin awards at home or abroad. Foreign nationals not affiliated with a U.S. institution must use their Franklin awards for research in the United States. Applicants who have previously received a Franklin grant may reapply after an interval of two years.

The Center for Communal Studies at the University of Southern Indiana annually invites applications for a Research Travel Grant to fund research at the Communal Studies Collection at USI's David L. Rice Library. The Communal Studies Collection's rich archival materials hold information on over 600 historic and contemporary communal societies, utopias and intentional communities. A complete listing of communities can be found on the Rice Library website. Strengths include materials on the Harmonists and Owenites who settled nearby New Harmony, Indiana, but the breadth of the collections covers American communalism more broadly. Applicants may be graduate students or established scholars in the United States or abroad from any discipline that involves the study of communalism (such as history, English, anthropology, economics, sociology, etc.). The grant will fund research up to $2,000 to be used by June 30 of the subsequent year. All applications must include a letter detailing the project and its significance to communal studies, a proposed budget and a vita. Applications are due annually by 1 May. The winner of this Research Travel Grant is announced annually in June 2019. The Eberly Family Special Collections Library on the University Park campus of Penn State offers travel awards of $1,500 for researchers whose work would benefit from access to the collections held at Penn State. Currently, three travel grants are available: The Dorothy Foehr Huck Research Travel Award: Supports one award for researchers using any collection from the Special Collections Library. The Helen F. Faust Women Writers Research Travel Awards: Supports two awards for researchers working on a project including women writers that would benefit from use of the Eberly Family Special Collections Library's collections The Albert M. Petska Eighth Air Force Archives Research Travel Award: supports one award for researchers working on a project pertaining to history of the Eighth Air Force during World War II.

The Bakken (Minneapolis, MN) awards short-term fellowships and travel grants to scholars and artists to support research using The Bakken's library and artifact collections. The collections address the history of electricity and magnetism (with a focus on their roles in the life sciences and medicine) and include approximately 11,000 books, journals, and manuscripts, and 2,200 instruments, medical devices, and other artifacts. The awards are to be used to help defray the expenses of travel, subsistence and other direct costs of conducting research at The Bakken for researchers who must travel some distance and pay for temporary lodging in the Twin Cities in order to conduct research at The Bakken. Visiting research fellowships are awarded up to a maximum of $1,500; the minimum period of residence is two weeks, and preference is given to researchers who are interested in collaborating informally for a day or two with Bakken staff during their research visit. Research travel grants are awarded up to a maximum of $500 (domestic) and $750 (foreign); the minimum period of residence is one week. Applications are due March 4th, 2013.

Research Travel Grants assist scholars who wish to use the University of Notre Dame's archival collections in Catholic Americana at the Hesburgh Libraries. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants support research in Roman archives for projects on U.S. Catholic history. Hesburgh Research Travel Grants provide funds for scholars to research primary source materials relating to the life and work of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987. Hibernian Research Awards support the scholarly study of Irish American history.

Travel grants of up to $2,500 are available to support research between August 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020 in the Special and Area Studies Collections of University of Florida. Proposals are due Friday, May 17, 2019, with award notifications expected to be made the week of June 17, 2019. Evaluation criteria include interdisciplinarity, use of more than one collection, and a tangible publication or scholarly outcome. Awardees must travel 100 miles or farther to be eligible. Grants are available for research in any of the department's collections and must be used for onsite research. The International Seminar on the History of the Atlantic World at Harvard University announces the availability of short-term grants to support archival research in Atlantic history, 1500-1825. The awards, up to a maximum of $2000, are designed to support archival research focused on the common, comparative, and interactive aspects of the lives of the peoples of the Atlantic world in the early modern period. Grants are primarily intended for travel to enable scholars to reach sources not otherwise accessible rather than to support research in more easily available archives. The grants are open to both advanced doctoral and post-doctoral scholars, with the emphasis on individuals at the beginning of the academic career. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2013, for grants to be used from July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014. Applicants will be notified of the results by mid May.

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies invites applications for postdoctoral research grants of up to $5,000 in any field of Baltic Studies. Funds may be used for travel, duplication, materials, equipment or other needs as specificed. Applicants must have received PhD no earlier than January 1, 2007. This grant award has no citizenship or residency restrictions. The application deadline for the 2018-2019 grant is 20 December 2017. Award notifications will be made by March 2018. The Department of Special Collections at Washington University Libraries St. Louis, Missouri is happy to announce that this year's travel grant competition is now open. The Application Deadline is March 15, 2013. Travel must occur between May 15, 2013 and June 30, 2014. Travel reimbursement grants of up to $1000 are available to faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and independent scholars who would like to use our collections for research. Funds may be used for transportation, food, lodging, and photocopying. Applicants must reside at least 50 miles from St. Louis.

The 15th David Nichol Smith Seminar organizing committee is pleased to announce that they will be able to offer a limited number of travel grants to expand postgraduate participation in the 2014 'Ideas and Enlightenment' conference. These are provided through generous funding contributions from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Putting Periodisation to Use Group, and the Sydney Intellectual History Network at the University of Sydney. These scholarships are part of an extended postgraduate program at DNS XV, which will be supported by the newly formed DNS Graduate Caucus. We anticipate that the program will include paired mentoring between junior and senior colleagues at the conference and a professional development workshop. Those awarded scholarships travel grants would be expected to be actively involved in this program.

The Historical Library of the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library at Yale University is pleased to announce its fifth annual Research Travel Award for use of the Historical Library. The 2013-2014 travel grant is available to historians, medical practitioners, and other researchers who wish to use the collections of the Historical Library.  There is a single award of up to $1500 for one week of research during the academic fiscal year 2013-2014 (July1-June 30).  Funds may be used for transportation, housing, food, and photographic reproductions.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library and the Department of History are pleased to announce a Research Travel Grant to support scholars conducting research in any of the Library's collections. The University Library is one of the largest research libraries in the U.S., holding more than 14 million volumes and 24 million other items and materials in all formats, languages, and subjects. Special collections include the papers of literary figures such as Marcel Proust, H.G. Wells, Carl Sandburg and Gwendolyn Brooks, extensive collections relating to the history of science and technology, extraordinary collections of Slavic and East European, and Latin American and Caribbean materials, and a unique collection of sub-Saharan African research materials. Travel grant recipients will also have access to the Library's digital collections (including journal subscriptions and licensed databases) during their stay.
