This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites U01 applications for the continuation of the consortium to study Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer (CPDPC) to conduct and complete ongoing studies on chronic pancreatitis (CP) and factors that increase the risk of pancreatic cancer in patients (children and adults) with CP, pancreatogenic (type 3c) diabetes (T3cDM) and in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes. The CPDPC is composed of several Clinical Centers (CC) and one Coordination and Data Management Center (CDMC) The Consortium since its establishment in Fall 2015 has conducted longitudinal clinical studies with comprehensive epidemiological and biological characterization of patients with CP (including those with Acute Recurrent Pancreatitis, ARP) to gain insight into the pathophysiology of chronic pancreatitis and its sequela: chronic pain, pancreatic insufficiency, T3cDM and the diabetes/pancreatic cancer association. The consortium has also undertaken studies on the development of pancreatic cancer in newly diagnosed diabetic patients. Applications for the Consortium Coordination and Data Management Center (CDMC) are being solicited via RFA-DK-19-504 "Consortium for the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer Coordination and Data Coordinating Center (CPDPC-CDMC) (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)". To effectively contribute to the ongoing CPDPC clinical studies, each CC applicant should include researchers and clinicians with multi-disciplinary expertise to match the objectives of the CPDPC (see https://cpdpc.mdanderson.org/clinicalstudies.html). Research CCs will be expected to share results freely within Consortium and to develop trans-Consortium collaborative projects that make use of the combined expertise and technological capabilities present in all of the CCs.

Research progress in the treatment for diseases of the exocrine pancreas [chronic pancreatitis (CP), pancreatogenic diabetes mellitus, and pancreatic cancer] has been hampered by the disorders' heterogeneity, the limitations of previous small cross-sectional studies, the inability to safely obtain pancreatic tissue for discovery, and the lack of structured epidemiology tools, genetic testing, and biomarker development and validation. Mechanism-based research of these diseases has suffered from the lack of systematically collected clinical measures in longitudinal cohort studies linked with biospecimens. Given the increasing incidence and prevalence of CP and its association to the development of pancreatic cancer, its complications, high mortality rate, and associated health care cost, the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Cancer Institute established in 2015 the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer (CPDPC) Consortium as multidisciplinary teams composed of members from the Clinical Centers and Coordination and Data Management Center to undertake a comprehensive clinical, epidemiological, and biological characterization of patients with CP (including adults and children with recurrent acute pancreatitis) to develop treatments and gain insight into the pathophysiology of CP and its sequela: chronic pain, pancreatic exocrine and endocrine insufficiency, T3cDM, and the diabetes/pancreatic cancer association. Another objective was to undertake studies on the development of pancreatic cancer in newly diagnosed diabetic patients

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Innovative Grants represent a joint effort to promote and support innovative pancreatic cancer research. They aim to spur creative and cutting-edge ideas and approaches in pancreatic cancer research, including those successful in other areas of cancer that have justifiable promise for pancreatic cancer. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer. These grants are available to full time, independent junior and senior investigators, including those with experience in other areas of cancer or biomedical/health science research who have promising ideas and approaches that can be applied to pancreatic cancer research. The grants provide $200,000 over two years ($100,000 per year) for direct and indirect expenses related to the research project, which may include salary and benefits of the grant recipient and any collaborators (grant recipient/collaborator salaries limited to 20 percent of the total grant), postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, graduate students and/or research assistants, research/laboratory supplies, equipment and publication charges for manuscripts that pertain directly to the funded project. It is anticipated that multiple Innovative Grants will be funded.

These grants are available to full time, independent junior and senior investigators, including those with experience in other areas of cancer or biomedical/health science research who have promising ideas and approaches that can be applied to pancreatic cancer research.

The annual program provides start-up funding to basic scientists and clinicians in a position to test innovative ideas for improving the diagnosis of and new treatment modalities for pancreatic cancer; obtain preliminary data required for additional funding from other agencies for pancreatic cancer research;  advance the understanding of pancreatic cancer cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, morphology and response to therapy; and establish collaborations within the field that can be considered for further funding. The foundation expects that seed grant awards will generate quality abstracts, papers, and presentations, as well as new proposals. Priority will be given to investigators whose primary intent is to build a strong curriculum in pancreatic cancer research.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's (PanCAN) competitive Grants Program funds promising and meritorious research on pancreatic cancer. The organization's grantmaking strategy recognizes the need to maintain a pipeline of researchers dedicated to studying pancreatic cancer and acknowledges an urgency to accelerate scientific and medical breakthroughs that benefit patients. Early-career grants are awarded with the goal of attracting researchers to the field of pancreatic cancer, while translational and clinical grants support research that is well-positioned for next steps and has the potential to drive improvements in clinical practice and patient outcomes.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is accepting applications for its 2018 Catalyst Grant program. The program, which aims to encourage and support junior faculty in the pursuit of pancreatic cancer research and establish a career path in the field, provides grants of up to $500,000 over three years to junior investigators who have yet to secure their first significant research funding. Research projects may be basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature but must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer. Grant recipients not only receive financial support for their funded research but also are invited to join the network's Community for Progress, a mentorship program that works to advance the goal of increasing survival rates and improving outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients. To be eligible, applicants must have a doctoral degree (PD, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DVM, ScD, DNS, PharmD, or equivalent) in the biomedical sciences (or in a field applicable to health science research) and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. In addition, at the start of the grant term on July 1, 2018, applicants must hold a faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor, or the equivalent.

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-AACR Grant for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research represents a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. This grant is available to independent junior and senior investigators to develop and study new ideas and approaches that have direct application and relevance to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research may be in any discipline of basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research. Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as from investigators with experience in other areas of cancer research who have promising ideas or research approaches that can be applied to carcinoid tumor and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Career Development Awards represent a joint effort to encourage and support junior faculty who are in the first five years of a faculty appointment (at the start of the grant term) to conduct pancreatic cancer research and establish successful career paths in this field. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer.

The goal of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Research Acceleration Network (RAN) Grants is to provide funding and strategic assistance to research projects with the potential to double survival for pancreatic cancer by the year 2020. These projects must be implemented by a multi-institutional team and include a clinical component with an endpoint relevant to improving the detection or treatment of pancreatic cancer. The RAN Grants will provide $1,000,000 in funding for direct and indirect expenses related to the research project over a one- to three-year time frame. In addition to the grant, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will provide strategic project management support to help optimize project implementation and progress during the grant term.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Fellowship represents a joint effort to encourage and support a postdoctoral or clinical research fellow who is in the first three years of his/her fellowship training (at the start of the grant term) to conduct pancreatic cancer research and establish a successful career path in this field. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer.

The annual Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Pathway to Leadership grant program represents a joint effort to ensure the future leadership of pancreatic cancer research by supporting outstanding early career investigators, beginning in their postdoctoral research positions and continuing through their successful transition to independent research. A five-year grant of up to $600,000 will be awarded to support a highly promising postdoctoral or clinical research fellow who is in the mentored research phase and ready to transition to an independent research career.

The annual Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Pathway to Leadership grant program represents a joint effort to ensure the future leadership of pancreatic cancer research by supporting outstanding early career investigators, beginning in their postdoctoral research positions and continuing through their successful transition to independent research. A five-year grant of up to $600,000 will be awarded to support a highly promising postdoctoral or clinical research fellow who is in the mentored research phase and ready to transition to an independent research career.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is accepting applications for its 2019 Translational Research grant program. Through the program, grants of up to $500,000 over two years will be awarded for high-priority pancreatic cancer research that is poised for important translational next steps. For the purposes of this grant, translational research is defined according to the framework conceived by the Translational Research Working Group created under the auspices of the U.S. National Cancer Advisory Board. Specifically, the program supports research that follows fundamental discovery all the way through Phase I/II clinical trials.

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-AACR Grant for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research represents a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. This grant is available to independent junior and senior investigators to develop and study new ideas and approaches that have direct application and relevance to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research may be in any discipline of basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research.

In 2017, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will invest $12.8 million in innovative research related to pancreatic cancer, a 33 percent increase over 2016. This investment includes both the network's competitive, peer-reviewed Research Grants Program and its internal research initiatives. To that end, the network has issued an RFA for its Early Detection Targeted Grant program, through which grants of up to $1 million over four years will be awarded to support ancillary research studies that identify promising blood biomarkers or imaging approaches with the potential to facilitate the use of specimens and/or participants in a cohort of new-onset diabetics and to validate components of a protocol for the early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
