Through this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) seeks research project (R01) grant applications describing projects that integrate imaging and fluid-based tumor monitoring (liquid biopsy) assays during cancer therapy in patients to determine the optimal use of those modalities in the characterization of therapy response and/or emergence of resistance.

If the proposed project does not address any of the Overarching Challenges, the application should describe how the project will nevertheless address a critical need in the field of prostate cancer research and/or patient care. Proposed projects may include basic, translational, or clinical research, including clinical trials, but must demonstrate clinical relevance. The potential impact of the proposed research is expected to be near-term and it must be significant and go beyond an incremental advance. To maximize the potential for impact, investigators are strongly encouraged to incorporate the following components into their study design where appropriate: authentication of proposed cell lines; statistical rigor of preclinical animal experiments. A major focus of the Network must be placed on the acquisition and distribution of specimens in limited supply, such as: * Castration-resistant disease, metastatic disease, primary untreated "de novo" metastatic disease as defined by STAMPEDE or high-risk disease defined by CHAARTED, tumors of the aggressive variant phenotype * Disproportionately affected populations, defined by ethnicity or health service access (safety net, rural, settings) * Active surveillance populations * Longitudinal/sequential specimens The Network must also collect, store, and manage data derived from the distributed biospecimens, including images of the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained samples. Applications should describe how the development of the Network biorepository will enable the prostate cancer research community to address the FY17 PCRP Overarching Challenges and FY17 PCRP Focus Areas by utilizing Network biospecimens. Applications should propose a clearly defined mission that will guide the proposed Network's biospecimen collection, distribution, and data collection processes. The Network will consist of three to five Pathology Resource Sites and a Coordinating Center, which will also function as one of the Pathology Resource Sites. These organizations will be jointly responsible for developing and maintaining the biorepository for prostate cancer research.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant impact on cancer patients and survivors. Access to cancer prevention and screening services may be limited or unavailable due to the pandemic. To help address these issues and find solutions, the CARE Fund seeks to support research that focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on outcomes, research, risks, or well-being for cancer patients.

The PRCRP Idea Award with Special Focus mechanism is intended to support innovative, untested, high-risk/potentially high-reward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods in cancer research that are directly relevant to service members, their families, and other military beneficiaries. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design. The Idea Award with Special Focus is not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project. The proposed research project should be novel and innovative. Innovative research may introduce a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other uniquely creative qualities. Research that is an incremental advance upon published data is not considered innovative and will not be considered for funding under this award mechanism. Inclusion of preliminary data is discouraged. The outcome of research supported by this award should be the generation of robust preliminary data that can be used as a foundation for future research projects to understand the mechanisms of initiation, or progression of cancer. This award is not intended to support ongoing research in the applicant's laboratory; therefore, inclusion of preliminary data other than serendipitous findings or in very small numbers is not consistent with the exploratory nature of this award.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has issued new Requests for Proposals through its Translational Research Program to support researchers in six critical areas of unmet medical need. The RFPs mark LLS's aggressive and proactive approach to addressing the challenge of improving outcomes for cancer patients with particularly urgent needs. The LLS Translational Research Program is designed to help accelerate the movement of promising discoveries from lab to clinic. The goal of translational research is to reduce the time between laboratory findings and actual treatment. The society aims to stimulate more academic research in the following areas: new immunotherapeutics for patients with acute myelogenous leukemia; novel therapeutics for patients with non-cutaneous T-cell malignancies; introduction of novel agents in the treatment of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma; therapies for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes who have failed hypomethylating agents; therapies for new targets such as bromodomains, methylation, and other epigenetic approaches for patients with high-risk myeloma; and research that addresses long-term and late effects of blood cancer therapies.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications for projects that bridge biological mechanism to population level scales. By incorporating insights and data from one end of the cancer research spectrum into the framework of the other, projects should be able to cross-validate data gathered at different scales, and explore links between basic biology, population science, and potential health applications in treatment, prevention, diagnosis, and/or screening. Proposed projects should pose a challenging cancer research question that can be addressed by connecting these two ends of the research spectrum that would be difficult to address or explain through biological or epidemiological investigation alone. Only a single cohesive project integrating aspects from these two areas is allowed in each application.
