This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is a joint effort between the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to promote research that will advance current understanding of the mechanisms by which aging impacts cancer onset, progression, metastasis, and therapeutic response. To maximize collaborative interactions for this program, NIH extramural scientists will collaborate with investigators in the NCI Center for Cancer Research (NCI CCR) and/or the NIA Intramural Research Programs (NIA IRP) to address key questions on the aging contribution to cancer. These collaborating NCI CCR and NIA IRP investigators should be tenured or tenure-track scientists with whom the NIH extramural NIH scientist has made prior contact regarding the collaborative project.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify the specific biological or biobehavioral pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. Research applications should test the effects of physical activity, alone or in combination with weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain), on biomarkers of cancer prognosis among cancer survivors identified by previous animal or observational research on established biomarkers other than insulin/glucose metabolism, especially those obtained from tumor tissue sourced from repeat biopsies where available. Because many cancer survivor populations will not experience recurrence but will die of comorbid diseases or may experience early effects of aging, inclusion of biomarkers of comorbid diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease) and of the aging process are also sought. Applications should use experimental designs (e.g., randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), fractional factorial designs), and include transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioral intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied.

As the population of older adults continues to increase, the prevalence of diseases and conditions common in aging is expected to rise. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, dementia, and chronic kidney disease will likely continue to be the greatest sources of morbidity and mortality, as well as the costliest conditions to healthcare systems. However, older Americans infrequently have just one chronic health condition. In 2010, over two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries had more than one chronic condition, and 14% had 6 or more chronic conditions. Disability and greater care needs associated with these conditions is leading to an increase in residence in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Healthcare costs will continue to grow, with health-related spending expected to top 20% of gross domestic product by 2025. Also listed under R01

Honoring the legacy of Paul A. Marks, MD, President Emeritus of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a distinguished scientist, the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research recognizes outstanding young investigators who have made significant contributions to increase the understanding of cancer or improve the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research. The Paul Marks Prize is awarded every other year to up to three investigators. The first recipients were named in 2001. The winners will present their work at a scientific symposium at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and share a cash award of $150,000. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. Nominees must be age 45 or younger on the date of the submission deadline, April 30, 2013. Prize winners will be announced in Fall 2013.

As an initiative of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Aspiring Physicians & Research Scientists Conference is a two-and-a-half day enhancement program that focuses on science innovation and world-class care. Cleveland Clinic physician and research scientist-led presentations and mentoring/coaching sessions provide students a unique opportunity to interface with our world renowned staff. An abstract poster competition provides students the opportunity to showcase their research. Our target audience includes underrepresented minority science, math and pre-med college students. It is designed to increase representation of American Indian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander physicians, research scientists, physician investigators and physician leaders. Applicants, who must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in college majoring in math, science, or pre-med will be notified of acceptance via email by April 19, 2013. Research students interested in participating in the poster research scholarship competition must submit an abstract of their work by April 12, 2013. Applicants accepted to present their posters will be notified by email by April 19, 2013.

Through the generous contribution of an anonymous donor, the AACR established this award in 1979 to give recognition to a young investigator on the basis of meritorious achievement in cancer research. In accordance with the wishes of the donor, the recipient must be no more than 40 years of age by the time the award is received. The recipient of the 34th Annual AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research will receive an honorarium of $5,000, presented a 50-minute lecture, and be given full support for the winner and a guest to attend the AACR Annual Meeting 2014, in San Diego, CA, USA (April 5-9, 2014.)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages innovative research to enhance the quality of measurements of dietary intake and physical activity. Applications submitted under this FOA are encouraged to include development of: novel assessment approaches; better methods to evaluate instruments; assessment tools for culturally diverse populations or various age groups, including children and older adults; improved technology or applications of existing technology; statistical methods/modeling to improve assessment and/or to correct for measurement errors or biases; methods to investigate the multidimensionality of diet and physical activity behavior through pattern analysis; or integrated measurement of diet and physical activity along with the environmental context of such behaviors.

The proposed program's purpose is to increase the availability of supportive services for young breast cancer survivors (YBCS), young women with metastatic breast cancer (mBC), and their caregivers and families by supporting organizations and entities that serve this population. The awardees will address strategies relevant to the target audience. These include: the establishment of a network of survivors and caregivers to facilitate policy, system, and environmental change interventions that increases access to lifestyle programs, clinical preventive services, and cancer care among survivors; development and implementation of innovative technological educational opportunities for health care providers on topics relevant to the delivery of appropriate treatment and care of YBCS and mBC; and utilization of patient navigation and community health worker program strategies to reach underserved populations to enhance their access to and utilization of YBCS services and programs. To this end, activities funded by this NOFO, are intended to support organizations in closing the disparity gap needed to support young breast cancer survivors. Specifically, organizations will implement strategies that aim to reduce disparities observed in survival and quality of life due to race, ethnicity, or other social determinants of health. This NOFO will also support organizations in providing support services/programs to YBCS and mBC; and provide resources for health care providers in caring for all YBCS and mBC regardless of race, ethnicity, age, or sexual orientation during the period of performance of 09/30/2019-09/22/2024.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is dedicated to raising money and awareness of the causes of childhood cancer. The foundation emerged from the front-yard lemonade stand of four-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott, who while fighting cancer herself wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination was inspirational, and by her untimely death at the age of 8, Alex had helped raise $1 million. Today, ALSF is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the United States and Canada. To advance its mission, ALSF is currently accepting applications for its Reach Grants program, which seeks to remove barriers to the transition of ideas from the pre-clinic stage to a clinical setting. To that end, grants of $250,000 over two years will be awarded to developmental therapeutic studies in the late stage of preclinical testing. Preference will be given to research projects that, if funded, will likely result in the initiation of a clinical trial two to three years from the start of the project. Funded projects must be focused on childhood cancers.

Through the program, grants of up to $60,000 will be awarded to community-based programs and/or healthcare agencies (e.g., community health centers, cancer centers, and women's health centers) that conduct outreach, provide breast health education, and help steer medically underserved women and men to breast cancer screening services and follow-up care, as needed. Programs should educate women in their communities about breast health and encourage women to talk with a doctor or nurse to understand their individual risk of breast cancer and at what age and how often they should be screened. In addition, applicants must incorporate into their programs systems to promote the re-screening of the women served by the program. Small, community-based organizations are encouraged to apply.

To advance this mission, ALSF is inviting applications for is Young Investigator Grants program.  Through the program, a grant of up to $150,000 over three years will be awarded in support of research scientists in the early stages of their careers such as postdoctoral or clinical fellows with a commitment to pediatric cancer investigation.

This announcement provides funds to recipients to partner with health systems and individual primary care clinics to implement evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening uptake among applicant defined populations age 50-75 years that have CRC screening rates lower than the national, regional, or local rate. Recipients will: 1) establish partnerships with health systems and primary care clinics to implement at least two of four EBIs recommended in The Community Guide (client reminders; provider reminders, reduction of structural barriers, and provider assessment and feedback); 2) establish partnerships with organizations that provide expertise to support the implementation of EBIs in primary care clinics; 3) conduct a formal assessment of each clinics capacity/readiness to implement EBIs; 4) utilize the clinic assessment to select appropriate EBIs to implement; 5) provide resources to partner clinics to provide and support completion of follow-up colonoscopies after a positive or abnormal screening test; and 6) collect and submit high-quality clinic-level data including baseline and annual CRC screening rates.

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) is seeking small grant (R03) applications to stimulate and facilitate the entry of promising new investigators into research on arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases and injuries. This FOA will provide support for pilot research that is likely to lead to a subsequent individual research project grant (R01).

The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral fellowship (F31) award is to enable promising predoctoral students to obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting dissertation research in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed mentored research training must reflect the applicants dissertation research project and is expected to clearly enhance the individuals potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist.

The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA postdoctoral fellowship is to enhance the research training of promising postdoctoral candidates who have the potential to become productive, independent investigators in scientific health-related research fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers.
