Through this limited competition Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) solicits a single application for the continuation of the AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (ACSR). The eligible applicant institutions (which are the two current NCI-supported ACSR lead institutions) are expected to maintain the cooperative group structure and the activities of the ACSR. The primary objective of the ACSR will be to acquire, store, and equitably distribute tumor tissues, biological fluids, and associated demographic data from patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated malignancies. In addition to serving acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and cancer researchers at large, the ACSR will specifically provide biorepository functions for another NCI supported initiative, the AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC). As the AMC is currently expanding its agenda to include Latin America, it is expected that the ACSR will collaborate with the AMC to develop regional biorepository support for AMC activities in Latin American countries. The continuing ACSR must have appropriate strategies and capabilities to address several high priority areas of specimen acquisition including specific types of cancer (AIDS-defining as well as non-AIDS defining), types of biospecimens and accompanying clinical data, and biospecimens from geographic areas of interest.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to address the needs of the maternal and pediatric HIV scientific community for research data translation and sharing. This initiative will support secondary data analyses using archived HIV/AIDS data and specimens to generate new research questions and findings relevant to the scientific mission and priorities of the NICHD, Maternal and Pediatric Infectious Disease Branch (MPIDB) and Office of AIDS Research (OAR). The proposed research areas identify two main areas that most likely control the major activities for establishing and maintaining the tumor niche: the role of the AIDS retrovirus and the response of the host to HIV infection. These areas of research will advance our understanding of the contribution to the tumor niche in the context of an underlying HIV infection.

This FOA is also designed to aid and facilitate the growth of a nationwide cohort of scientists with a high level of basic research expertise in cancer health disparities research who can expand available resources and tools, such as biospecimens, cell lines and methods that are necessary to conduct basic research in cancer health disparities. In addition, the FOA will further the development of scientific areas, providing support for early-stage exploratory projects that lead to future in-depth mechanistic studies (such as R01 projects) of the biology of cancer health disparities.

The FOA will also support the enhancement of research capacity of LMIC institutions for research in this area. The FOA solicits applications for Specialized Center Cooperative Agreements (U54) for research on HIV-associated cancers from research institutions in the U.S. and LMICs.  Each application is required to propose between two to three research projects that address high-priority questions relevant to both the LMIC and the NIH HIV/AIDS research agenda.  The proposed projects may range, as appropriate, from basic research to translational efforts as well as population and implementation studies.

The program, which aids in the advancement of ovarian cancer treatment research and the need for a screening test, offers funding in support of ovarian cancer research studies that are deemed to be most aligned with T.E.A.L.®'s mission by the organization's board of directors and a scientific advisory board. This year, the program has special interest in research related to the p53 gene, although it will accept proposals for other research related to ovarian cancer. In 2018, T.E.A.L.® will award one-year grants of up to $50,000. Project costs must be thoroughly outlined in the budget portion of the application, and grants cannot be applied to indirect costs or PI salary. The primary purpose of this solicitation is to support highly interactive, multi-disciplinary teams, whose research efforts are focused on large-scale discovery of T cell immune epitopes associated with infectious or autoimmune diseases, and rejection of, or tolerance to, transplanted cells/organs/tissues. The discovery of epitopes associated with T cell responses to commensals and how they may be altered by the inflammatory state will also be supported by this solicitation. Validation of these epitopes and defining their role in immune protection or immune-mediated pathogenesis in humans is required. Investigators may include development/refinement of T cell epitope prediction tools as part of their research plan. It is anticipated that the multi-disciplinary teams will minimally include immunologists with the appropriate expertise in epitope identification and validation, and either microbiologists and/or virologists with expertise in the target pathogen(s), clinicians with expertise in the target autoimmune diseases, or clinicians with expertise in transplantation, as appropriate. This program will not support studies related to HIV/AIDS, or allergen epitopes, including those which are infection-related.

The KCRP Technology Development Award is a product-driven award mechanism intended to advance the development of technologies to aid kidney cancer clinical and patient outcomes, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, or quality of life. Applicants with limited kidney cancer experience are strongly encouraged to collaborate with those having substantial expertise in kidney cancer research and/or kidney cancer model systems. Applications must describe how the technology will enhance the existing knowledge of kidney cancer.
