This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages innovative research to enhance the quality of measurements of dietary intake and physical activity. Applications submitted under this FOA are encouraged to include development of: novel assessment approaches; better methods to evaluate instruments; assessment tools for culturally diverse populations or various age groups, including children and older adults; improved technology or applications of existing technology; statistical methods/modeling to improve assessment and/or to correct for measurement errors or biases; methods to investigate the multidimensionality of diet and physical activity behavior through pattern analysis; or integrated measurement of diet and physical activity along with the environmental context of such behaviors.

PCORI seeks to fund pragmatic clinical trials, large simple trials, or large-scale observational studies that compare two or more alternatives for addressing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or management of a disease or symptom; improving healthcare system-level approaches to managing care; communicating or disseminating research results to patients, caregivers, or clinicians; or eliminating health or healthcare disparities. Proposed studies must address critical clinical choices faced by patients, their caregivers, clinicians, or delivery systems. They must involve broadly representative patient populations and be large enough to provide precise estimates of hypothesized effectiveness differences and to support evaluation of potential differences in treatment effectiveness in patient subgroups.

Much of the research MDA supports is what is termed "basic" research: research investigating the fundamental biological processes of nerves, muscles and what goes awry to cause disease. Much of this research is not aimed at one specific disease but can apply to many neuromuscular diseases. Projects at this stage, for example, may initially seek answers about a muscular dystrophy, but ultimately lead to a therapy for ALS. This is how MDA's broad coverage of diseases can be so powerful. Basic research that results in the identification of a therapeutic target also may be called "discovery research."

The program goals are to stimulate investigation of underexplored pathways and initiate transformative discoveries in lupus that can drive the development of safer and more effective treatments. Investigations into the fundamental mechanisms of lupus and its complications, explorations of novel targets and pathways, and applications involving novel technologies and interdisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged.

The Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving grant applications from U.S. universities/institutions of higher education for basic research to investigate some of the outstanding scientific questions in the synthesis of ammonia (NH3) from nitrogen (N2) using processes that do not generate greenhouse gases (such as CO2, NOx, etc.). Of interest is molecular level research that will provide the scientific basis for novel catalysts and mechanisms for nitrogen activation. Ideally, this research should produce fundamental knowledge that will lead to future catalytic processes for ammonia synthesis that are energy efficient, use renewable sources of energy, and do not produce greenhouse gases. This FOA will not consider proposals on process or reactor design, optimization or plant-level intensification. Research will not be supported whose primary goal(s) or challenge(s) are hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO2 capture or conversion, or outside the specific focus on nitrogen activation. The goal of the Vaccine Action Program (VAP) is to support collaborative vaccine-related research projects that ultimately reduce the burden of infectious diseases of importance in India, the U.S., the South Asian region and globally. Applications are encouraged from organizations/institutions that propose to conduct vaccine-related research through U.S.-Indo collaborations on a variety of infectious diseases, including immunologic characterization.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) announces the availability of a one-time administrative supplement for clinical research awards from limited NIH Institutes and Centers and for specific types of awards, listed above in 'Activity Codes', to support research on sleep disturbance and chronic pain. The proposed activities may include the addition of: sleep assessment to clinical studies of pain; pain assessment to clinical studies of sleep; measures of sleep and/or pain for clinical studies already incorporating sleep and/or pain measures; additional data collection time points for clinical studies already incorporating sleep and/or pain measures; or secondary data analysis of clinical studies to explore contributions of sleep disturbances to chronic pain as long as the research objectives are within the original scope of the peer reviewed and approved project and can be completed within the remaining funding period. The final goal of the supplement should be a contribution to methods or understanding needed for future larger scale studies that directly investigate the interactions between sleep disturbances and chronic pain.

DARPA seeks innovative proposals to develop technology for enhancing cognitive skill learning in healthy adults by using noninvasive peripheral neurostimulation to promote synaptic plasticity in the brain. The Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT) program will elucidate the anatomical and functional map of the underlying neural circuity involved in regulating synaptic plasticity. The program seeks to demonstrate peripheral modulation of the neural circuit, connect neuroplasticity with cognitive improvements, and optimize intervention protocols for long term retention with no side effects.

The NIH Director's Transformative Research Awards complement NIHs traditional, investigator-initiated grant programs by supporting individual scientists or groups of scientists proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, original and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms, establish entirely new and improved clinical approaches, or develop transformative technologies. Little or no preliminary data are expected. Projects must clearly demonstrate the potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research.

The purpose of this study is to: 1) collect information on practice patterns in special populations to assess possible barriers to generic substitution ; 2) compare clinical practice (e.g., drug product manipulation prior to administration, co-administration with another food or drug) with labeled drug administration information in the assessed populations to identify factors that raise issues for safety and effectiveness with generic substitution; and 3) analyze the impact of product-level, patient-level, and provider-level factors on generic drug substitution. The outcome of this study will help identify research needs, support FDA's regulatory science efforts to monitor and ensure successful generic substitution, and provide evidence to assure the public on generic drug safety and effectiveness.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the research and development necessary to advance spectroscopic imaging technologies, methods, study designs, and analyses to non-invasively measure the rate and extent to which a topically applied compound becomes available in the epidermis, at or near a site of action within the skin. The expectation is that the funded work will produce an accurate, sensitive and reproducible approach that measures the amount of drug present in the epidermis at each of a series of depths below the skin surface, which can be utilized to monitor epidermal pharmacokinetics by repeated measurements over time.

The Technology Validation and Start-Up Fund (the "Program") provides grants to transition technology from Ohio research institutions into the marketplace through Ohio start-up companies. Ohio research institutions may apply for funding for validation (e.g. viability testing, prototyping, etc.) of their unlicensed technologies. Ohio start-up companies may apply for funding to advance towards commercialization a technology they intend to license from an Ohio research institution.

Leidos will match high-scoring, unfunded National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposals with private biomedical foundations and/or industries seeking to fund promising research. Foundations will have access to peer-reviewed research proposals that directly relate to their funding priorities, industry will have access to a rich pipeline of early stage and translational research proposals that align with its priorities, while applicants with strong research proposals will be provided with a second opportunity to secure funding. The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for Clinical Centers (Hubs) in Strategies to Innovate EmeRgENcy Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN).SIREN will enable conduct of high-quality, multi-site clinical trials to improve the outcomes for patients with neurologic, cardiac, respiratory, and hematologic, and trauma emergency events. SIREN will consist of one Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and up to 10 clinical centers (Hubs). A Hub will typically be an academic center or tertiary referral center which will actively enroll patients into every clinical trial performed in SIREN, regardless of disease focus.A Hub will additionally provide scientific leadership and administrative oversight to its multiple satellite sites ("Spokes").Together the Hub and Spokes will provide access to a large and varying patient population for clinical trials. SIREN will implement a total of at least four large (1,000 patient) simple, pragmatic clinical trials in the emergency department and pre-hospital settings. The clinical trials will be meritorious, peerreviewed projects which will be awarded under separate funding announcements.

NIGMS supports T32 Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA) predoctoral research training through programs in 11 different scientific disciplines, and M.D.-Ph.D. training through its medical scientist training program.These programs are designed to enhance graduate research training in basic biomedical sciences relevant to the NIGMS mission. The overall goal of these programs is to promote fundamental, interdisciplinary and innovative research training essential for future biomedical researchers.

The overall goal of the Intramural NIGMS Postdoctoral Research Associate (PRAT) program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available in appropriate scientific disciplines to address the Nation's biomedical research needs.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage research projects addressing challenging cancer problems using systems biology approaches. In support of this goal, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has initiated the Cancer Systems Biology Consortium (CSBC) through multiple FOAs. The CSBC network will consist of specialized U01 Research Projects (supported under this FOA), U54 CSBC Research Centers (supported under RFA-CA-15-014), and a U24 Coordinating Center (supported under RFA-CA-15-015).CSBC Research Projects should address a well-defined, discrete, and circumscribed research question in cancer incorporating quantitative experimentation, analysis, modeling and validation, which are the hallmarks of systems biology. As part of the CSBC, investigators from the Research Projects will have the opportunity to share resources and expertise across the Consortium and participate in Consortium activities and annual meetings.

With this Dear Colleague Letter, NSF is providing advance notice of a change in the eligibility of prospective applicants to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) to allow the community to plan accordingly. Effective as of the 2017 competition (Fall 2016 deadlines), NSF will limit graduate students to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school. No change is made to the eligibility of undergraduates, of bachelor's degree holders without any graduate study, or of individuals who have had an interruption in graduate study of at least two consecutive years.

The Zenith Fellows award was initiated in 1991 to provide a vehicle for research support for donors with a substantial personal commitment to the advancement of Alzheimer's disease research. The awards are made possible by the generosity of a group of individuals and organizations (Zenith Society) that have each committed $1 million to the Alzheimer's Association for support of the program.
