The purpose of the NIH Blueprint Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience (D-SPAN) Award is to support a defined pathway across career stages for outstanding graduate students who are from backgrounds that are nationally underrepresented in neuroscience research. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites researchers to submit applications for support of clinical projects that address critical needs for clinical trial readiness in rare diseases. The initiative seeks applications that are intended to facilitate rare disease research by enabling efficient and effective movement of candidate therapeutics or diagnostics towards clinical trials, and to increase their likelihood of success through development and testing of rigorous biomarkers and clinical outcome assessment measures, or by defining the presentation and course of a rare disease to enable the design of upcoming clinical trials.

The Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM)at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)plan to support the development of innovative and transformative mathematical and statistical approaches to address important data-driven biomedical and health challenges. The rationale for this interagency collaboration is that significant advances may be expected as the result of continued NSF investments in foundational research in mathematics and statistics as well as inter- and multi-disciplinary research and training at the intersection of the quantitative/computational sciences and domain sciences, while NIH benefits from the enhancement of biomedical data science with new approaches that strengthen the reproducibility of biomedical research and support open science.

The goals of the Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaborations (AccelNet) program are to accelerate the process of scientific discovery and prepare the next generation of U.S. researchers for multiteam international collaborations. The AccelNet program supports strategic linkages among U.S. research networks and complementary networks abroad that will leverage research and educational resources to tackle grand scientific challenges that require significant coordinated international efforts. The program seeks to foster high-impact science and engineering by providing opportunities to create new collaborations and new combinations of resources and ideas among linked global networks. This solicitation invites proposals for the creation of international networks of networks in research areas aligned either with one of the NSF Big Ideas or a community-identified scientific challenge with international dimensions. AccelNet awards are meant to support the connections among research networks, rather than supporting fundamental research as the primary activity. Each network of networks is expected to engage in innovative collaborative activities that promote synergy of efforts across the networks and provide professional development for students, postdoctoral scholars, and early-career researchers. There are two proposal categories covered by this solicitation: Catalytic and Full-Scale Implementation.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) intends to continue support for research conducted within a national Dental Practice-Based Research Network (DPBRN). The NIDCR will fund one national DPBRN Administrative and Resource Center (RFA-DE-19-001) and one national DPBRN Coordinating Center (RFA-DE-19-002) as companion awards to support the infrastructure for and implementation of multiple observational studies and clinical trials. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is soliciting applications for investigator-initiated clinical observational studies and clinical trials to be conducted in the DPBRN through a milestone-driven UG3/UH3 cooperative agreement mechanism. Each UG3/UH3 award will support an individual project which will utilize the DPBRN infrastructure and resources for study planning and implementation. This FOA supports a UG3 clinical study planning phase and potential transition to a UH3 implementation phase, with a combined total funding period of up to six years. Progression to the UH3 phase is based on an administrative review and is dependent on success in meeting UG3 milestones, consideration of the DPBRN as an appropriate venue for conduct of the research, NIDCR program priorities, and availability of funds. The main goals of the national DPBRN are to streamline the implementation of national oral health research studies in dental practices on topics of importance to practitioners and their patients, to provide evidence useful in daily patient care, and to facilitate the translation of research findings into clinical practice.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites R21 applications for studies that address knowledge gaps in mechanisms of Fc-dependent, antibody-mediated killing of infected cells or aberrant cells, or antibody-mediated therapeutic ablation of cells implicated in immune pathologies, including autoimmune and allergic diseases. More specifically, the purpose of this FOA is to promote innovative and exploratory research to elucidate mechanisms of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and antibody-dependent cell-mediated phagocytosis (ADCP), and to promote development of tools, technologies, and animal models to facilitate identification and evaluation of cytotoxic killing mechanisms mediated by human antibodies in vivo.

The goal of this program is to support collaborative translational research projects aligned with NIH efforts to enhance the translation of basic biological discoveries into clinical applications that improve health. It encourages high quality science demonstrating the potential to result in understanding an important disease process or lead to new therapeutic interventions, diagnostics, or prevention strategies within the research interests and priorities of the participating NIH Institutes/Centers (ICs).

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from institutions and organizations to conduct research focused on elucidating mechanisms of Fc-dependent, antibody-mediated killing of infected or aberrant cells, or antibody-mediated therapeutic ablation of cells implicated in immune pathologies, including autoimmune and allergic diseases. Studies supported by this FOA are expected to define variables that affect efficiencies of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and/or antibody-dependent cell-mediated phagocytosis (ADCP), both in vitro and in vivo. U01 awardees will be expected to attend annual Program Progress/Steering Committee meetings and present progress to fellow awardees and to NIAID program staff. The goal of the meetings is to facilitate collaborations between funded investigators and to accelerate development of mechanistic models that incorporate the collective findings of this program. Advances in our understanding of these Fc-dependent killing mechanisms will inform more efficient design and optimization of ablative antibody therapeutics and may also inform design of vaccines that preferentially elicit ADCC- or ADCP-efficient antibody responses. This FOA uses the U01 grant mechanism, while the companion FOA, PA-19-xxx, uses the R21 mechanism. High risk/high reward projects with limited preliminary data or utilize existing data may be most appropriate for the R21 mechanism.

Students enrolled in any PhD program are eligible to apply, as are those who earned a PhD in 2016 or 2017. Given candidates with comparative skills and preparation, preference will be given to European-based scholars. The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this Fogarty International Center R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs by enhancing health workforce capacity in high HIV-burden, low-income countriesin sub-Saharan Africa; enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce by encouraging interprofessional education initiatives to enhance team health care delivery; help recruit individuals with specific specialty or disciplinary backgrounds to research careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences in low-income countries to enhance capacity of US research projects; foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral and clinical research and its implications to improve capacity to develop, implement and evaluate evidence-based health services. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on courses for Skills Development;Research training; Mentoring Activities; Curriculum or Methods Development to increase Outreach to broad communities to enhance participation in skills development courses, curricula, and mentoring activities.

This FOA invites applications for a Biostatistics Research Center to participate in a clinical consortium to carefully characterize the course of glycemia over the entire duration of pregnancy and understand the evolution of dysglycemia when it occurs. A separate FOA (RFA-DK-18-018) invites Clinical Centers to recruit and study pregnant women starting in the first trimester, and continuing at least through delivery. All awardees will form a cooperative research consortium in conjunction with NIDDK to design and implement a uniform protocol. Information obtained from this study is expected to lead to improved approaches for screening for GDM, and inform the timing and approach for future clinical trials to decrease adverse perinatal outcomes and long-term sequelae of dysglycemia during pregnancy in both the mother and offspring.

The overall purpose of the NIAAA Alcohol Research Center program is to provide leadership in conducting and fostering interdisciplinary, collaborative research on a wide variety of topics relevant to the Institutes mission. The purpose of this administrative supplement is to enhance data management and sharing in existing NIEHS-funded R01 grants through the integration of new expertise in data and information sciences, or knowledge management, into the research team. This initiative aims to support activities that enhance one or more aspects of research project data management, including improving the capture, storage, organization, management, integration, presentation, and dissemination of digital biomedical research data.

Rotary International is accepting applications for its CART Fund, a program designed to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer's disease research projects in the United States. To advance its mission, the fund awards grants of up to $250,000 to support early and conceptual plans of projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. Unless they intend to extend previous discoveries into new directions or applications, projects should be new and distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area. Eligible applications may come from full-time faculty (or equivalent status) at U.S.-based public and private institutions, including universities, colleges, hospitals, or laboratories.

The American Society for Radiation Oncology is accepting applications for its 2019 Minority Summer Fellowship Award. The annual program is designed to introduce medical students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine to the discipline of radiation oncology early in their medical education. Although medical students in all years are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to first- and second-year students. In an effort to promote radiation oncology as a career choice, the fellowship will expose medical students to clinical, basic, and translational research questions in radiation oncology. The fellowship provides each student with a $4,500 package that includes a $3,500 stipend for the eight-week training program (exceptions can be made for a longer program but will need to be approved by ASTRO's Committee on Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, or "CHEDI") and $1,000 toward the cost of travel to the organization's 2019 annual meeting. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a United States medical school and be able to identify a mentor with a successful record of research productivity. The mentor should be an ASTRO member. In addition, research must be undertaken at a North American institution during the summer of 2019.

Sigma Xi, a society of research scientists and engineers that rewards excellence in research and cooperation among scientists in all fields, has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences and financial support for more than eighty years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the society promotes scientific achievement through hands-on learning. Through the Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research program, the society awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision-related research. Funding can support travel expenses or nonstandard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project. While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding, approximately 75 percent of Grants-in-Aid of Research funds are restricted for use by dues-paying student members or students whose project advisor is a dues-paying member. This fall, NSF intends to announce Mid-scale RI funding opportunities. These will be for research infrastructure that will advance the frontiers of discovery in any of the research domains supported by NSF.2 These forthcoming funding opportunities are intended to encompass research infrastructure broadly defined, from the creation of mid-scale disciplinary instrumentation to the implementation (including acquisition and construction) of mid-scale facilities, cyberinfrastructure and other infrastructure that are demonstrated to be necessary to support specific science, engineering or education research objectives associated with current or future NSF-supported research activities. This portfolio may also include mid-scale upgrades to existing research infrastructure. NSF anticipates that one solicitation will include an opportunity to propose Mid-scale RI projects with a total project cost of between approximately $6 million and approximately $20 million, pending the availability of funds. A second solicitation is expected to include an opportunity to propose Mid-scale RI projects with a total project cost of between approximately $20 million and approximately $70 million, pending the availability of funds.
