The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Minority AIDS Initiative: Service Integration grant program. The purpose of this program is to integrate evidence-based, culturally competent mental and substance use disorder treatment with HIV primary care and prevention services. The population of focus is individuals with a serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder (COD) living with or at risk for HIV and/or hepatitis in at-risk populations, including racial and ethnic minority communities. SAMHSA expects that this program will reduce the incidence of HIV and improve overall health outcomes for individuals with SMI or COD. While there has been an overall decline in new HIV infections in the U.S. from 2008-2014, racial and ethnic minority communities continue to experience disproportionate impacts of HIV.

Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) seeks applications to develop, sustain, enhance, and enrich a centralized national biorepository for genetic studies of psychiatric disorders for facilitation and acceleration of the scientific understanding of the genetic risk architecture underlying mental disorders. This effort is expected to involve a functionally integrated, multi-disciplinary team that will provide for open sharing of biosamples and data resources through a single, centralized, national resource to advance basic and translational research in the genetics of mental disorders.

The purpose of the NIMH Mentored Career Development Award to Build Research Capacity in Global Mental Health is to provide support and "protected time" (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience that will facilitate the entry of early career investigators into the field of global mental health research and lead to research independence. The NIMH invites applications from advanced postdoctoral and/or recently appointed early research scientists (usually with a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and no more than six years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application) in biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences who are pursuing global mental health research careers in areas supported by the NIMH. After the first year of the award, award recipients must spend at least four months per year in-country conducting research at research sites or institutions in World Bank defined low- or middle-income countries (LMICs).

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research project grant (R01) applications to leverage large-scale, real-world data from electronic health records (EHRs) from a variety of systems (e.g., the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrative claims, as well as public or private health care systems and networks) to understand risk, onset, course, and impact of treatments and services for mental and neurological disorders and to identify promising new mental health and neurological disorders research. The ARC is intended to provide infrastructural support that facilitates the development of high impact science in HIV/AIDS and mental health that is relevant to the NIMH mission. This FOA intends to support innovative, interdisciplinary research in several areas, including basic, neurological (i.e., neuro-HIV), behavioral and social, integrated biobehavioral, applied, clinical, translational, and implementation science.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks applications proposing coordinated efforts to accelerate gene discovery for psychiatric disorders in cohorts of African ancestry on the African continent to advance the important goal of global mental health equity. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is one of several FOAs participating in a program called, Ending Disparities in Mental Health (EDIfy-MH ). This FOA should be used when two or more collaborating sites are essential to conduct the proposed research. It is required that the Research Strategy be identical across linked collaborative U01 applications, with the exception of a short section describing the specific function of each application under "elements unique to this site." The Human Subjects section for each application should be specific to the research conducted at that site. For a linked set of collaborative U01 applications, each application must have its own Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) and the program must provide a mechanism for cross-site coordination. The overall goal of this initiative is to identify neurophysiological measures as potential assays for treatment development research. The FOA will support efforts to optimize and evaluate measures of neurophysiological processes that are disrupted within or across mental disorders in both healthy humans and in another species relevant to the therapeutic development pipeline. The initiative will support initial proof of concept studies aimed at identifying measures for potential development as preclinical assays for evaluating potential new drug and device therapies and their targets. Data will also reveal assay measures where the performance between preclinical animal species and humans is dissimilar, thus establishing a firm basis for limiting speculative extrapolations of preclinical animal findings to humans. The ultimate practical goal of this FOA is to improve the efficiency of the therapeutic development process by identifying coherence of measures and inconsistencies between the preclinical screening pipeline and clinical evaluation of new treatment candidates and thereby hasten the development of more effective treatments for mental disorders.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs and advance the priorities outlined in the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) Annual Strategic Plan and the research program priorities of the NIMH Division of AIDS Research (DAR). To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Research Experiences and Mentoring Activities that either capitalize on existing networks of collaborating investigators or develop institute-based research education programs. Both research experiences and mentoring activities are required; research experiences are expected to be primary. Research Education Programs are expected to enhance the professional development of the participants and foster a career trajectory towards independent research in the mental health of HIV/AIDS.
