    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research projects focused on adducts to cellular macromolecules as indicators of exposures to cancer risk factors relevant to human populations. The priority is on projects that will focus on adductomic approaches, i.e., address some aspects of the totality of adducts. These projects should explore the basic aspects of adducts/adductomics that may have a potential utility in cancer detection, cancer prevention, and/or assessing cancer risks. The projects should be relevant to adducts in humans and human populations but may be conducted using various model systems (e.g., cultured cells, animals, etc.). The use of human biospecimens is encouraged and expected if appropriate but not required. In well-justified cases, innovative studies using the adductomic approaches in the context of cancer etiology and/or gene-environment interaction research may also be appropriate. For projects intended for NIEHS support, the focus may be on innovative technology and method development.

The model system might involve specific defects generated by transgenic gene insertion and/or deletion, gene editing, chemical/physical means, and/or other approaches to emulate characteristics of human disease or create defects amenable to cell-replacement and/or regenerative therapy. Using non-human primates or other cone-dominant species that are more representative of the anatomy and physiology of the human retina are highly encouraged. Other biological models are acceptable provided they meet the overall objectives of the FOA.

2018 Part the Cloud: Translational Research Funding for Alzheimer's Disease - 0 views

    Applications will be accepted from academic investigators and small companies with lead candidate therapeutic agents that require early stage testing prior to Proof of Concept (POC) Phase 2 or 3 efficacy studies, or with lead therapeutic agents that have already established human safety data and require a small-scale pilot Proof of Mechanism (POM) study in humans to begin proving the scientific concept in humans. This award will support Phase 1 studies or pilot small- scale Phase 2a studies for repurposed drugs in normal individuals or individuals with preclinical or symptomatic Alzheimer's disease (i.e. early human studies to set the stage for efficacy studies), including single and multiple dose studies to establish safety, brain penetration and/or target engagement and POM in preparation for larger proof of concept trials. In addition, proposals may be considered that are POC to validate biological marker(s) of disease progression in a clinical trial environment. Any proposal must have a clear focus on Alzheimer's disease and related disorder and be translational in nature. All proposals should clearly and explicitly outline the measure to be investigated, the methods for study, and outcomes. Researchers from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

    The "3-D Retina Organoid'' Challenge (the "Challenge''), is an ideation Challenge in which the National Eye Institute (NEI; http://www.nei.nih.gov/), part of the National Institutes of Health (http://www.nih.gov(link is external)), is asking for ideas to maximize the physiological relevance of 3-D human retina culture systems. Currently, retina culture models do not capture the complexity of the human retina. The goal of the Challenge is to transform innovative ideas into concrete concepts to develop new in vitro 3-D human retina models that recapitulate the organization and function of the human retina. NEI intends to follow this challenge with a follow-on but distinct Reduction to Practice Challenge, which will aim to invoke scientific and technological development of the model system. Technological breakthroughs in this arena could allow researchers and physicians to better understand, diagnose, and treat retinal diseases.

    NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) has released solicited research response area NRA 80JSC017N0001-BPBA "Topics in Biological, Physiological, and Behavioral Adaptations to Spaceflight: Integrated One Year Mission Project and Other Opportunities" that solicits applied research in support of HRP goals and objectives. The first topic in the solicitation is for proposals in the area of Analyses of the Temporal Nature of Human Adaptation to Long-Duration Low-Earth Orbit Missions. HRP has a requirement for sufficient crewmember experience at one year in spaceflight to demonstrate the presence or absence of unacceptable deleterious physiological, psychological and medical effects of spaceflight on human health and performance beyond the experience base of six-month expeditions and to permit extrapolation to early interplanetary expeditions with durations of up to two to three years. Therefore, HRP is proposing an integrated One-Year Mission Project on the International Space Station (ISS) consisting of five one-year missions five standard-duration six-month missions paralleling the year-long expeditions, and five short-duration crew vehicle exchange expeditions lasting up to two months to occur at the mid-point of each 1YM. The Data Center will provide intellectual and logistical support for the maintenance, integration, analysis, interpretation, curation, and reuse of data generated by HHEAR in support of extramural research projects. The Data Center will build and manage an exposure data repository and associated data science resources, including a public access Data Portal, a Data Submission and Review Portal, and an ontology and associated standardized data structure. In addition, the Data Center will provide statistical, analytical, and informatic support for HHEAR components and studies using the HHEAR infrastructure. The ultimate goal is maximizing potential use and impact of exposure data in human health studies.

Each Hub will incorporate a developmental core to develop novel measures for environmental samples, expanding the number of current, commonly measured analytes, and developing new methods for detecting analytes in other environmental samples and providing additional insight into the sources of exposures that influence human health. The Environmental Monitoring Lab will also serve as a 'clearinghouse for evaluation and provision of emerging tools and technologies for personal exposure assessment to the client community.

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is to support the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN). The goal for CHTN is to collect and distribute high quality human tissue specimens to facilitate basic and early translational cancer research, as well as assay development. The CHTN is designed as a unique biospecimen resource in that it is based on prospective collection and distribution of samples upon specific investigators requests. Samples to be collected from patients include pre-cancerous, cancerous, and benign neoplastic tissues, as well as specimens corresponding to non-neoplastic diseases and uninvolved tissues. This FOA solicits applications for CHTN awards from institutions/teams capable of contributing to the mission of CHTN by: (1) providing prospective investigator-defined procurement of high-quality malignant, benign, diseased, and uninvolved (normal adjacent) tissues and fluids from patients throughout North America and elsewhere; (2) assisting individual investigators with regard to specific specimen needs of their research; (3) assisting in developing and disseminating knowledge on high quality practices for successfully operating a biospecimen repository; and (4) educating the community about the importance of the availability of high quality human tissue specimens for medical research. Depending on their profile and capabilities, applicants must indicate whether they propose to function as the CHTN adult biospecimen division or the pediatric specimen division. Nonetheless, it will be acceptable for an adult biospecimen division, if capable, to contribute pediatric samples for networked requests.
