Limited Competition for the Continuation of Cure Glomerulonephropathy (CureGN) Particip... - 0 views

    The purpose of this Limited Competition is to extend the Cure Glomerulonephropathy (CureGN) Network by continuing to support the Participating Clinical Centers (PCCs). The CureGN Network is a multicenter observational cohort study of glomerular disease patients with the goal of improving care for all glomerular disease patients. The operational components of the study include four multi-site PCCs and a Data Coordinating Center (DCC). The CureGN Network, established in 2013, has recruited nearly 2,200 of 2,400 planned study participants and followed them with annual in-person clinic visits and interim telephone contacts. The CureGN PCCs will continue to follow-up previously enrolled participants. The PCCs will optimize retention strategies, developing novel methods for "remote" or "virtual" study participation; ensure complete and accurate data collection with a focus on clinical assessment of disease activity and outcomes; and participate in the development and validation of study-wide semi-quantitative assessment of histopathologic lesions. It is expected that a focus on disease features unique to glomerulonephropathy, and outcomes relevant to the full range of patient experience, combined with carefully curated clinical and biochemical data will uncover new predictors of the disease course, pathophysiologic processes, disease subtypes and novel treatment targets.The DCC provides key leadership functions for this study in the areas of study organization, study design and implementation, overall management, data management and analysis, and biosample management.     The overall objective of the LungMAP is to better understand human lung development by building an open-access reference resource of a comprehensive, dynamic, 3-D molecular atlas of the late-stage developing human lung with data and reagents available to the research community. Phase 1 of the LungMAP has generated foundational data from developing mouse and human lungs, created a web portal for public data sharing, and established a repository of human lung tissues. Phase 2 of the LungMAP will continue to generate and integrate high-resolution, multiscale molecular profiles associated with spatial information to provide molecular characterizations of functionally and anatomically defined cell types in the developing human lung. Phase 2 of LungMAP will focus on human lung only and will extend the scope to cover normal lung development into early adulthood (up to 25 years old), as well as abnormal lung development in selected neonatal and pediatric rare lung diseases.

    The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) intends to publish a series of Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) for Cooperative Agreements to solicit applications for a network of researchers collaborating across justice and community-based service settings to transform community-level responses to opioid misuse and opioid use disorder in justice-involved populations. Opioid misuse and opioid use disorder consequences exist at the intersection of health and justice systems. Improving the capacity of the justice system to respond to opioid crisis with evidence-based approaches that include the use of medications for OUD requires strong partnerships between justice systems and healthcare as well as other community based organizations. Supporting the development of these relationships and novel models of justice-healthcare and other community collaborations is a critical target in addressing the current opioid crisis. NIDA is interested in launching a network of investigators who can rapidly conduct research to address the opioid crisis in justice settings. A variety of research methods will be used, including clinical trials, implementation science research, policy evaluations and/or modeling approaches. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and appropriate projects. This FOA is expected to use a multicomponent cooperative agreement mechanism. The FOA is expected to be published in October 2018 with an expected application due date in December 2018.

    The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) is a global effort to create a reference map of all cell types in the human body. It is an ambitious goal to generate a fundamental reference for biomedical research. The HCA was born out of advances in single cell biology that made it conceivable to collect extensive measurements that inform our understanding of cellular heterogeneity in health and disease. Due to the growth of the community, pace of technology, and interest from the international community, the project has gone from conceivable to feasible. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Helmsley Charitable Trust are pleased to announce continued support for the Human Cell Atlas by collaborating on two new funding mechanisms that the community can access through a single application portal. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative seeks to continue the work of the HCA community with a focus on interdisciplinary work and collaboration through the formation of 3 year Seed Networks. The Helmsley Charitable Trust welcomes applications that will construct a detailed atlas of the human gut. CZI Seed Networks aim to solidify growth of the community and result in a first draft of several organs - there is no requirement for a gut component in CZI applications. Additionally, newly formed Networks are designed to catalyze partnership among the scientific community and the funding community so that we can work together toward a first draft of the HCA.

We invite applications to join the Neurodegeneration Challenge Network through two RFA mechanisms: CZI Ben Barres Early Career Acceleration Awards: five-year investigator grants for early career academic investigators, with an emphasis on those who are new to the field of neurodegeneration. We seek to empower investigators to pursue bold ideas and to take risks within a supportive and collaborative environment. Awardees will benefit from mentorship support, as well as professional development, training and network opportunities, and practical career guidance to help them navigate this early stage of their careers. It is with great pleasure that we name this Award in memory of Dr. Ben Barres. Through his research career and his life and humanity, Ben embodied both the spirit and the scientific aims of this Award and the Challenge Network approach. CZI Collaborative Science Awards: three-year grants for small group interdisciplinary collaborations. At least one member of the collaboration should be a physician with active clinical engagement in an area relevant to the proposal. These grants are aimed to support innovative, bold, high risk/high impact projects at the interface of basic and disease biology. Project Specifications This Request for Applications (RFA) seeks to support the continued growth of nascent projects and to incubate new networks. The Seed Networks should generate new tools, open source analysis methods, and significant contributions of diverse data types to the Human Cell Atlas Data Coordination Platform. Applications should have a primary focus on the healthy tissues that will contribute to a reference atlas. Seed Networks Seed Networks should consist of at least three principal investigators, including at least one computational biologist or software engineer, together with additional computational biologists, engineers, experimental biologists, and/or physicians. CZI Seed Networks aim to support foundational tools and resources for the HCA and will not require a gut component in the application. CZI Seed Network Grants have four overarching scientific goals: - Build and support networks of collaborating scientists and engineers; - Contribution of high-quality data to v1.0 of the HCA; - Development of new technologies and benchmark data sets, particularly those anchored in spatial as well as molecular information; - Support of computational biology within the Human Cell Atlas community.

    The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) intends to continue support for research conducted within a national Dental Practice-Based Research Network (DPBRN). The NIDCR will fund one national DPBRN Administrative and Resource Center (RFA-DE-19-001) and one national DPBRN Coordinating Center (RFA-DE-19-002) as companion awards to support the infrastructure for and implementation of multiple observational studies and clinical trials. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is soliciting applications for investigator-initiated clinical observational studies and clinical trials to be conducted in the DPBRN through a milestone-driven UG3/UH3 cooperative agreement mechanism. Each UG3/UH3 award will support an individual project which will utilize the DPBRN infrastructure and resources for study planning and implementation. This FOA supports a UG3 clinical study planning phase and potential transition to a UH3 implementation phase, with a combined total funding period of up to six years. Progression to the UH3 phase is based on an administrative review and is dependent on success in meeting UG3 milestones, consideration of the DPBRN as an appropriate venue for conduct of the research, NIDCR program priorities, and availability of funds. The main goals of the national DPBRN are to streamline the implementation of national oral health research studies in dental practices on topics of importance to practitioners and their patients, to provide evidence useful in daily patient care, and to facilitate the translation of research findings into clinical practice.

    The goal of the RCN program is to advance a field or create new directions in research or education by supporting groups of investigators to communicate and coordinate their research, training, and educational activities across disciplinary, organizational, geographic, and international boundaries. The RCN-UBE program originated as a unique RCN track to “catalyze positive changes in biology undergraduate education” (NSF 08-035) and is now supported by the collaborative efforts of the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) and the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR). It has been responsive to the national movement to revolutionize undergraduate learning and teaching in the biological sciences as described in the “Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education” report. The RCN-UBE program seeks to improve undergraduate biology in different areas by leveraging the power of a collaborative network. The theme or focus of an RCN-UBE proposal can be on any topic likely to advance the goal of enhancing undergraduate biology education. Collectively, the program has contributed to developing and disseminating educational research resources and modules, to forging of new collaborations, and to sharing of best practices and ideas for scalability and sustainability of activities. These efforts have involved a large cadre of faculty, students, and other stakeholders. Proposed networking activities directed to the RCN-UBE program should focus on a theme to give coherence to the collaboration.

In 2013, an estimated 42% of Americans living with HIV were at least 50 years old, 25% were at least 55 years old, and 6% were at least 65 years old. Since the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy to treat HIV, people infected with the virus have been living longer and experiencing fewer of the medical conditions directly attributable to HIV infection and AIDS. However, with longer life expectancy, individuals living with long-term HIV infection exhibit many clinical characteristics commonly observed in aging: multiple chronic diseases or conditions, the use of multiple medications, and changes in physical and cognitive abilities.
